77 Responses to MLS Draft Q&A

  1. MZ says:

who pays for players to attend and stay at the combine and attend and stay at the mls draft?

  2. fubar says:

Carlos Martinez. Where is he and what about the him and the draft?

  3. metrostar 4 life says:

Ives, I’m interested in why you see RBNY taking a goalkeeper in Evan Brown, when I see them having a dilemma as we speak with both Conway and Cepero, who has stepped up.

  4. Andrew says:

I know they don’t have a high draft pick. But who do u c the Crew going after? Is there any chance that they may try to trade up?

  5. nate says:

How did Keum Sung Kim from Loyola-Chicago perform at the Combine? Any chance someone takes a flyer on him in the 4th round? Or is his size an issue?

  6. Chrös says:

What is the likelihood St. Louis is named as the next expansion team this weekend? I noticed there is now an official supporters group and they are meeting at Tigin downtown this weekend. You should check it out!

  7. Richard, UK says:

Following the combine, do you think scouts and coaches are more inclined to agree that this year is a “deep” draft or less inclined? I keep reading conflicting reports with regards to the level of play at the combine.

  8. metrostar 4 life says:

Nevermind, I have confused Evan Brown for Evan Bush, I guess a defender would be a smart pick for RBNY

  9. Speedball says:

    What’s your favorite draft beer?

  10. BFBS says:

Are we still to regard David Hertel as the best left back prospect even though you have him going low in the second round? Or Rodney Wallace (unimpressive combine but upside) and Lyle Adams (not a natural left back but played there in college) still the better choices for that particular position?

  11. Gilby says:

Ives, with the drop in roster size how many players drafted tomorrow do you see making MLS rosters in March?

  12. Ryan says:

What happened to UCLA products Brad Rusin and Michaels Stephens? I haven’t seen them in any recent mock drafts so I assume they didn’t sign and are going to Europe or Stephens could be heading back to college.

  13. Chrös says:

What is the likelihood that St. Louis is named as the next expansion team this weekend?

  14. Landis says:

What’s the deal with LAG getting a third round pick from Colorado for the rights of retired player Ty Hardin?

  15. Richard, UK says:

    Re: metrostar 4 life

As I understand, Patterson-Sewell is leaving. He’s only trial in Denmark now. New York will still need a 3rd choice goalie behind Cepero and Conway. Either Terry Boss isn’t working out or they’ll trade Conway and keep Cepero, Boss and a new goalkeeper.

  16. J says:

which players in the draft pool do you think have real potential to play for a national team, and of those, which could find themselves trying to decide between 2 or more countries?

  17. MZ, the league pays all costs for the Combine.

I haven’t heard a peep about Martinez. He is not eligible for the draft.

Metro, Evan Brown is a right back from Wake Forest.

As for the Crew, I can see them looking for a fullback or d-mid with their late picks.

  18. Chrös says:

Sorry for the double-post. When I checked back my first one was gone temporarily.

  19. argo0 says:

Due to roster contractions, by my count, MLS is contracting by 32 players — 56 lost in the reduction, less 24 gained for Seattle’s roster. How will that shift affect the likelihood of the players in the draft sticking with the clubs? I mean, this is supposed to be a fairly strong draft class, but it seems like even players in the second round may get cut just due to the numbers.

  20. Matt says:

Are any non-GA players signed to contracts before the draft? Is there anything to stop someone like Sam Cronin from signing a European contract after the MLS draft, if he doesn’t like the MLS’ offer? Or do teams have a good idea of what it will take to sign top non-GA draftees before they use the pick?

  21. kahlva says:

    Hey Ives,

What’s the “conditional 2nd round pick” the Red Bulls got from the VDB trade?

Do they now own the #27 Dallas pick?

  22. mEtRo bOy TilL Da dAy i DiE! says:

hey ives why do u think the red bulls are lookin at even brown for??. something happen with cepero / conway?

  23. eric says:

Is there a limit on the number of GA players one team can draft or have on their roster?

  24. Bob says:

Can only players that are american citizens ie play for the Nats quailfy for the GA players?

  25. Joe G. says:

Do you think that the most pressing needs of the RBNY should be filled in the upcoming draft or from scouted foreign talent? I personally think that there are very few defenders who will be able to step in right away, is it wise to pick one in the first round?

  26. Todd says:

Will MLS announce the next expansion teams?

  27. Sam Nishi says:

    Is Pete Vagenas

    Danny Pena?

  28. rob says:

Ives- What do you think the actual likelihood of Bornstein coming to Seattle is? Is this something you pulled out of thin air, or could you actually see it happening?

  29. TFC OZZ - Disgruntled TFC Fan says:

What do you think TFC needs more, prospects or veterans?

  30. Homey says:

Is John O’Brien in this year’s draft?

  31. lou says:

Hey Ives, do you know what happened to ryan maduro from providence college, he is great and i haven’t heard anything about him. Also is there a chance of the bulls going after a winger to maybe attempt and replace van den bergh because we are going to have a reall problem on that left side now.

  32. homey made me laugh.

  33. Greg says:

How did Patrick Murray from Furman perform at the combine? Any likelihood he will get drafted?

  34. kahlva says:

    Sorry, I’m a moron.

I meant what’s the “conditional 2nd round pick” from the Mike Magee trade with the LA Galaxy!

  35. I know last year there were a few players drafted that ended up not signing with their MLS clubs and instead playing in Europe. Do teams get compensated in any way when this happens? And if not, do you think they should? Just seems to me that it’s kinda unfair to just say to a team, “Sorry, outta luck. See you next year,” when other teams can make use of their picks.

  36. HIncha Tim says:

Who is eligible to be an Gen Adidas player? Do you just have to be playing in the U.S. or do you have to have some sort of residency status? I can’t find anything on this besides Wikipedia which I think is wrong.

  37. bgnewf says:

The consensus in TFC land is that Mo will deal away either the top two picks or deaft players and then trade them away…either or…The consensus up here is that Mo will also draft O’Brien White later in the first round, as he is a Canadian and counts as a domestic.

Are there any sniffs from other teams other than TFC when it comes to drafting White?

  38. Ross says:

The elimination of the reserve league got me thinking about player development in this country. With such an emphasis from the MLS on signing “players that can help right now” it seems like it’s not very conducive for late-bloomers and overlooked youth players, which are a decent sized segment of potential pros.

I’ve been thinking about the possibilities for MLS if the owners decided to buy the USL and PDL teams and treat them and their players like Major League Baseball treats their farm teams. I think it would be great for the infrastructure of MLS to have a place for players that aren’t quite ready or haven’t been given a shot to progress and prove their capabilities. It also seems like it would be good for MLS as far as not having to buy the players they’ve missed out on from these USL and PDL teams.

Also, I’m obviously talking about MLS doing this down the road if they are successful enough. What do you think of the idea? What do you think the future of MLS is in terms of player development?

  39. John says:

How in the world did Danny Cruz get a GA? He is simply not a soccer player and from the reports I read from the combine it seems that everybody agrees that this kid should of been staying in school.

  40. Kevin says:

so in your opinion should DC trade away any of its draft picks for a good defender like Jonathon Bornstien or Jimmy Conrad?

Or should they invest in a quality foward?

  41. Douglas says:

What time is the most likely to trade for the #1 spot in the draft? Who or what, specifically, do you think Seattle really wants to get if they trade the top spot?

  42. Thomas says:

Great idea for a draft related QnA. Of course by the time you get these posted, I imagine a lot of the “who do you think so-n-so will draft” will be answered. Regardless, keep up the great work.

Do you have a general sense of the attitude of some key players at MLS headquarters regarding their attitude towards the college game? Are there certain people known to be big backers or big critics?

  43. Thomas says:

Another one, or you can pick between this and the one I just posted.

This is only sort of related to the draft. Have you heard any rumblings about the college game becoming more in-line with FIFA rules…especially regarding substitutes?

  44. dave says:

Couldn’t find it anywhere but would Frei be an international (Swiss) or could he potentially be a US keeper?

Do you think moving up for Gonzalez would be worth it for DC? If they stayed put, could Frei slip to them?

  45. Tommy says:

I heard Martinez was back in residency…..i thought this was old news

  46. arena futbol says:

Fubar/Ives- Word on the interwebs is that Carlos Martinez is back in residency with the U-17 team at Bradenton (after being expelled last semester).

  47. skatetyb says:

of course there are going to be some sleeper picks in this draft that people have never even heard of… do you have any idea which sleeper players might get a shot at being drafted maybe later in the rounds?

  48. John says:

With MLS expanding to 18 teams in the next few years, do you see the possibility for success if MLS created a second devision to enter risky markets. Similiar to USL-1, USl-2. The Open Cup would get more exciting, the possibility of relegation would be more feasable, and more corners of the country would have a pro soccer team.

  49. United fury says:

Do you think drafting for the best player available is the right way to go, or do you think drafting for depth at certain positions is the way to go?

  50. RedLine55 says:

I would also like to know about Keum Sung Kim.. It would be great for an MLS team to take a chance on him for cheap… anyone who saw him play or played against him in the Chicago area knows that he is an absolute force to be reckoned with on the field.

  51. Zach says:

Hey whats up with the Magee to LA trade? is it final or not. Will it happen and whats being offered to RBNY

  52. mike says:

I will be elected god and ruler of the universe before MLS gets relegation. Why do people refuse to acknowledge the obvious here?

What is so great about it anyway (as a QPR fan I have to say my experience with it has been crappy).

  53. Grant says:

Great site, Ives. My uncle coached Evan Bush in high school. I was disappointed to see him not getting much action in the combine games, but do you have any idea which teams might draft him and whereabouts in the draft?

  54. A.S. says:

Ives, should I care about the draft? Or, to put it a bit less controversially, it seems to me that most quality MLS players are not acquired through the draft, but rather through signings. The draft picks I can remember (e.g., Wynne) haven’t really been difference makers. So, even if I am concerned about NYRB, I am not sure why I should pay a lot of attention to the draft. What say you in response?

  55. arena futbol says:

    > I would also like to know about Keum Sung Kim..
    > It would be great for an MLS team to take a chance on him

Here’s what Buzz from 3rd Degree said about his performance at the combine:

“Arguably the worst player at the combine. Did almost nothing right.”

  56. Amit says:

Ives, how good is your relationship with players? Are there any players you know of that read your blog?

  57. Tim F. says:

With the supplemental draft eliminated, what happens to all those MLS trades for supplemental draft picks? Are teams being compensated in any way?

  58. Shawn says:

since mls got rid of the supplemental draft what happens to the teams that made trades that invovlved supplemental picks? are they just out of luck?

  59. Art says:

    2 questions….Love the site!!

1)What MLS team do you think has the best staff of finding “diamonds in the rough” during MLS draft?

2)Which draft player do you see as making the most immediate impact in MLS?

  60. Matt says:

Ives- Do you see anyone from Notre Dame being selected tomorrow? Also, what are the Chicago Fire looking for?

  61. sanjose says:

I heard Richard Jata didn’t get much of a chance to showcase his ability at the combine. Where do you see him going in the superdraft tomorrow?

  62. Timber Nick says:

    Hey Ives,
If John O’Brien had the first overall pick in this year’s draft, who do you think he would take?

  63. rob says:

    not a question but a comment….

Eads Brigade, a supporters’ group in St. Louis, will be meeting pre-draft at tigin irish pub. stop by and say hello if you’re not already inside.

    333 washington ave.

three blocks east of the convention center. it’s on the first floor of a hampton inn, so its easy to find, especially if you’re staying there.

  64. lakaix15 says:

Do you know if any other players From RBNY on the Trade block?

With Great Performance From Sassano and Sinsia, would Stammler be looked at as trade Bate for a potetial good trade….

Or Woly, we showed that he can play in MLS in the PLayoffs but with 60k salery i believe and 3 players that are by far better then him do you see him getting traded also?

and what about Etchevery????…. can we trade hes old and has done nothing….

  65. This Guy says:

you have to clear up the Carlos Martinez saga for us. Is he back in the recedency?

A report came out on January 6th, 2009 saying 2 players were added and that Carlos was back. Two days later the 2 players were named and Carlos was not talked of. Just today I hear that Carlos Martinez is not back in Brandenton.

Do you have any information on this?

  66. northzax says:

Ives, there are rumors that USL teams are interested in making offers to players who are lowballed by MLS after the draft, any idea which teams and which players might be targeted?

  67. kahlva says:

    Hey Ives,

So are you sorry you opened up the floor for MLS Draft-related questions? :)

  68. RedLine55 says:

haha, thanks for the link ‘arena futbol’. tough read, however. yikes! ha.

  69. Tim F. says:

Can you share what the draft salary ranges will be? Is it around $150K for GA, $105-37K for other first rounders and $13K for everyone else?

  70. jb says:

Any chance Doug DeMartin from Michigan State gets a look by anyone? Will he end up on a USL roster?

  71. JJ says:

Does Houston try to trade up or do they keep their two late round draft picks and try to get a keeper project?

  72. Billy says:

    Whats your social security number?

  73. JohnC says:

What happen to Zack Simmons, goalie from Umass, Buzz has him ranked second overall for goalies but he wasn’t even at the combine.

Side note- why do people propose relegation for a league that has been around for 14 years. The entry fee is a ton of money and SSS- how would you ever convince a city to fork over public funding for a team that might be in the second division in two years.

  74. Chest Rockwell says:

Any chance DC moves Zach Wells to get a pick or player or anything at all?

  75. Adam says:

If DC United were offered a unicorn, a case of Heineken, and a first round draft pick for Marcello Gallardo, would that be a good trade off?

  76. Tom says:

What players have the most potential for the USMNT

  77. Ives says:

NO MORE QUESTIONS!! Thanks to all of you who took part. I will answer as many as I can tonight.
