Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

UEFA Champions League semifinalists Barcelona and Manchester United can move closer to their domestic titles with wins today, as Barcelona faces a tough Valencia squad and United takes on Tottenham.

The seasons in Mexico and MLS are still young, but there are still top matches to look for, such as the Chicago-Columbus tilt and the Pachuca-Cruz Azul showdown.

Talk about quality and quantity. Besides the two Setanta games (Come on Comcast get with it!) I have no reason to leave my couch whatsoever! Oh and USLLive is great, they quality of the camera work is surprisingly high. Barca to trounce Valencia!

  2. Chase says:

Edu scored again for Rangers, he is really make his opportunity count, barring an injury he has to be back in the first team for the Confederations Cup…

  3. adam says:

    Edu didn’t score today.

  4. John says:

you only have one mls match listed?

ne vs rsl on match center @ 9 pm
la vs colo on match center @ 930 pm
fcd vs chivas usa on match center @ 1030 pm
sj vs seattle on match center @ 1030 pm

  5. Kris says:

Stuttgart moves into a 3-way tie for 3rd with Bayern and Hamburg, only 1 point behind Berlin who has sole position of 2nd, and 3 points behind Wolfsburg who play tomorrow.

I really hope either Wolsburg, Berlin, or Stuttgart win the Bundesliga. I really hope Bayern or Hamburg don’t win it.

By the way, this is the EXACT same scenario that happened to Stuttgart 3 years ago when they won the Bundesliga for the first time since the early 1990s. They were sitting at about 6th but around 10 points back with a handful of games to play. They ended up going like 14-1-1 in their last 16 games to eventually win the title on the last day from Shaulke. Gomez was player of the year.

Well… They’ve only lost once since the 2nd half started, and Gomez is on fire and the team is playing as a team. Only 5 match days left, and Stuttgart play Bayern and Wolfsburg in the the last 3 weeks!

Also, our boy Bradley has been playing phenomenal for ‘Gladbach, and they are not out of the relegation zone. They have a fairly easy schedule too. Let’s pray they survive, or else it looks like their best players will be departing (Marin to HSV, Baumjohann to Bayern), and word is Bradley will be shopped around if they drop.

  6. madmax says:

Tim Howard gives up a soft goal to Robinho who pushes it between his legs from 8 meters away. Hardly world class by Tim.

  7. Chase says:

My bad. I used soccernet to look at Scottish scores and it redirected me back to the most recent games (the one on Sunday against Hibernian).

  8. adam says:

I agree with take on Confed Cup…. a Bradley-Edu pairing buffeted by Dempsey and Landy cakes on the wings would be formidable!

  9. Rekro says:

Spurs up 2-0 on Man U……

  10. Tom says:

I’m pumped that is free this year. Can’t wait to watch my Timbers tonight!

  11. doug says:

come on you spurs!! do it for the red half of merseyside

  12. Joamiq says:

Sickeningly horrendous call on that penalty. Complete bullshit. Let’s see if Man U can accept the points the ref is trying to gift them.

  13. Neumannator says:

I’m stuck in a boring seminar today and can’t watch. Someone please make my day and explain what happened with the penalty call. Also what’ the flow of the game like?

  14. Rekro says:

Here come united with another dramatic comeback…

  15. josh says:

4-2 united. champions are proving themselves

  16. Rekro says:

    Rooney makes 4-2 United!!!!!!

  17. andrew in tampa says:

4-2 manu- game, set, premiership title

  18. Joamiq says:

Penalty: Carrick gets a break on goal, ball is a good foot or two ahead of him, Gomes knocks it away cleanly, Carrick runs into Gomes on the ground, penalty.

Opens the floodgates, four goals later, it’s 4-2. I am giving United NO CREDIT whatsoever for this win. Apparently it’s in the Premiership rulebook that Man U isn’t allowed to lose at home during a title chase.

  19. afc says:

Jon Paul Pittman came on in the 77th minute and 2 minutes later got an assist for Wycombe in there 1-1 draw with Port Vale. Wycombe are in 2nd place and are looking to be promoted to League One!!!!

  20. Joamiq says:

If this doesn’t lead to instant replay, nothing will. Liverpool should be furious.

  21. Northzax says:

God, I can’t believe such a call would happen, what a mickey mouse league.

  22. Dave says:

Spurs have loads of Talent. Their problem is they have the worst goalie in the Prem-absolutely embarassing on the 5th goal.

Self-destruction by Spurs in the 2nd half-for all that work in the first-I’d probably jumpoff a bride if I were a spurs fan.

  23. simms21 says:

Wow honestly who lets themselves get violated like this in only 30 minutes.. after a 2-0 lead!!!!

  24. Rekro says:

    Berbatov puts in the 5th!!!!!

  25. madmax says:

EPL is a joke. SAF is always gifted 10-15 points every year. SAFL or (Sorry A$$ Ferguson League).

  26. Gene_SF says:

Pretty questionable call by the ref on the penalty. But from that point on, it is all United. They are loaded with talent. If I were Fulham, I would be watching this match now and patting myself on the back for beating them:)

  27. Neumannator says:

Joamiq: much thanks for the update.

Are we talking Serie A here?

  28. Thomas says:

The call was not as cut and dry as dude says. I would also remind dude that United was DENIED a clear penalty last week. Refs make mistakes. Great teams complete GREAT comebacks. Consistently I might add.

  29. Kyle says:

Gomes actually played well in the first half, but after that bad penalty call (and it was pretty cut and dry) he lost confidence (as he often does) and let in 3 really soft goals. Extremely disappointing second half.

  30. Krista says:

thanks for the info Kris. I hope Stuttgart can win. Haven’t kept up with them like I wanted or should have. Will be interesting to see what happens.

  31. Joamiq says:

    From ESPN Soccernet’s Gamecast commentary:

56′ Manchester United have a lifeline after Howard Webb commits the refereeing blunder of the season by handing United a pen that never was.

57′ Here’s what you missed, a ball from Rooney, a burst into the area from Carrick, a good parry away from goal by Gomes as he challenged the midfielder and then an inexplicable penalty award to Man Utd. Absolutely astonishing.

58′ Gomes got a clear touch on the ball, and it CLEARLY changes direction. Somehow, Howard Webb thought it was a penalty, Ronaldo converts and Spurs are fuming. No wonder. Its the worst decision I’ve seen this season, apart from maybe the Rob Styles decision. Where was that one? Oh, yeah, Old Trafford as well. Pathetic.

60′ Don’t get me wrong, its not United fault per se. Yes, they may go looking for a penalty but who doesn’t. The fact is the referees are blinded by Manchester United love and keep pointing to the spot. Terrible.

63′ Harry Redknapp is still fuming on the bench and now wonder. Everyone wearing white feels utterly miffed.

65′ Well there you go. The penalty gives United momentum and then they go and equalise, Rooney slotting into the near post after Ronaldo sent him away. Spurs’ ire rockets, again.

68′ Old Trafford goes utterly mental as Rooney crosses to the back post and Ronaldo dives to nod United in front. An assist in their astonishing comeback must go to ref Howard Webb.

69′ Well, what with Howard Webb handing United a non-existent penalty and the Red Devils scoring two more goals in quick succession everything has gone into meltdown here.

72′ Full credit to United for going goal crazy but there is no escaping the fact that their comeback was launched by one man and one man only, Howard Webb, who is off the map as a credible referee after his major rick.

76′ I can’t wait to hear what Harry Redknapp has to say after the game. I imagine Fergie will applaud the referee for a “brave” decision.

80′ United’s fans sing “2-0 and you f***ed it up,” which only serves to incense Spurs fans further. Howard Webb will be a marked man after this one feels….

82′ There’s a carnival atmosphere inside the ground now. This could be the result that seals their title. I wonder if Howard Webb will get to lift the trophy with them at the end of the season?

93′ Full time and United romp on, but their comeback was started by the referee.

  32. slyboy says:

what a horrible call…. so bush league.

  33. helmem says:

Gomes is not a bad keeper. Anyone who watched him in his time as PSV knows that he is fantastic…he has had a tough season and his confidence is messed up. I hope he gets on the right track.

  34. Chris says:

Fiorentina destroy Roma 4-1 (and Roma’s only goal was a consolation goal at the end of the match when it had pretty much been decided). Fiorentina have talent but really haven’t shown consistancy this season. This was a good performance by them though.

  35. GunneRR says:

Joamiq — Thanks for sharing the Gamecast commentary. Pretty biting stuff. I’ll have to find the highlights later.

  36. Dave says:

Look helmem, any player is ONLY as good as the game they are IN. And Gomes was horrid on the 2nd, 3rd,4th and 5th goals of this game, especially the 5th. Basically every goal except the PK.

On the second, he invited Rooney to shoot near post and then didn’t cover it, on the 3rd he began to move forward to intercept the cross, got caught in no mans land and then fell into the goal. On the 4th, he saved rooneys shot, only to get dragged into the goal by the ball’s momentum and the 5th well, we don’t even need to go there.

I know in the past he has been fantastic but today he was a disgrace. The ref is responsible for 1 United Goal, but what does it say about Spurs’ inferiority complex and pathetic team resolve that they allowed 1 goal to turn into 5, quickly.

  37. DC Josh says:

Watching the MLS pre-game. Why is Christopher Sullivan SO uncomfortable and awkward looking in front of camera. He always has that stupid grin on his face.

  38. Aljarov says:

There is NOONE at Crew Stadium. Even the Nordecke is about half full.

    Vegas becons………

  39. yassirarafat says:

john busch had at least 2 seconds to decide wat to do with that ball.

he elected to wait for a chance to grab it rather than boot it out of bounds.

looked like an idiot when Moreno stole it from him, danced around him, then danced past Conde to put away the second goal.

    a gift.

    go crewe.

  40. EDB says:

    fire look terrible

  41. yassirarafat says:

god, chicago turns on the jets after a Mcbride goal in the 83rd. Nyarko makes the play, McBride finishes the cross expertly.

then the fire get another within the next 3 minutes, as a broken play just outside of the box, the ball rolls to Segares and he belts it low far post.

fire trying to go for the win.

  42. yassirarafat says:

conde has a chance to win the game on a one on one opportunity, but takes too long and Marshall catches up to him to block it.

the crew let their win get away by playing without any urgency.

props to the fire for showing their depth of talent, offensively they have too many players who can hurt you.

will hesmer wants you to know your rights

  43. aristotle says:

I knew it! I knew Columbus would blow this game! I’ll admit that when it started to get late in the game and it was still 2-0 that I thought maybe they might actually hang on, but from the beginning of the game when they had the 2-0 lead I was sure they would blow it. This team is so overrated. I don’t believe it would be different if Schmid was still the coach either.

Last year was a fluke when several mediocre journeymen had good seasons for offense by committee, but there was no way it was going to happen again this year. I will be VERY surprised if this team finishes above five hundred. Warzycha is not helping either. They have no offense and for some reason will not even give Noonan a chance. (Injured?) It will be a LONG year for Columbus fans unless Columbus gets some offense.

  44. sonicdeathmonkey says:

Does anyone know why Pachuca and Cruz Azul is playing in an empty stadium tonight? Is it punishment for fan behavior, or does the Pandemic scare have something to do with it?

  45. aristotle says:

Yes, it’s because of the strange flu that’s going around down there. That’s not the only game in Mexico that will be in front of an empty stadium. Sellouts with zero fans in attendance. That has to be some sort of soccer first!

  46. A.S. says:

“There is NOONE at Crew Stadium. Even the Nordecke is about half full.”

It was spring football at Ohio State – 95,000 to see how the Buckeyes look.

  47. Tony in Quakeland says:

I ask again: Is Alan Gordon the worst regular in ML? Two midfield give aways that I would have yelled at a U10 for making.

  48. Phil says:

Anyone else think that Bruce Arena looks like the Stay Puft Marshmallow man?

  49. Tony in Quakeland says:

Switching games – gorgeous Mathis goal! Volley on corner – outside of the foot. Vintage Mathis.

  50. Anthony says:

    6 goals for RSL!!!

  51. HardHatMike says:

“There is NOONE at Crew Stadium. Even the Nordecke is about half full.
