Denmark releases roster for USA friendly

Denmark logo

The Danish national team announced the roster that will take on U.S. national team on Nov. 18 in Aarhus.

Christian Poulsen, Dennis Rommedahl and Thomas Kahlenberg are just some of the top European-based standouts called in for the match, which is the first of two friendlies the U.S. team is playing in Europe. The Americans are facing Slovakia on Nov. 14.

What do you think of the group? Excited for the match? like the USA's chances?

I need the USA roster I can’t take it any longer

  2. William the Terror says:

damn. i ws hoping that Stig Tofting ws coming out of retirement for this one.

  3. bigdeadbat says:

any updates on how charlie is doing?

  4. dena says:

The Slovaks have also released their roster

  5. Mike says:

I keep hearing that the only player who could possibly replace Davies is Donovan, but there’s no left wing to step up. Well, why not throw Dempsey over there and put Holden on the right? Holden has showed what he can do, especially in terms of crossing ability, and Dempsey plays on the left for Fulham. For the WC, why not (and this is assuming the health of everyone but Davies – for the friendlies, put Clark instead of Jones):

  6. Brian says:

I don’t speak any Danish, so perhaps it’s explained in the article why they were left out, but Nicklas Bendtner, Daniel Jensen, or Michael Jacobsen

  7. Brian says:

    *and Michael Jacobsen

    …are not on the roster.

  8. JGIB says:

Do we have tv schedual for the games?

  9. einar says:

y does everyone forget that holden is left footed and can also play on the left?

  10. dena says:

Nicklas was injured on the weekend vs. Spurs

  11. Master Po says:

Yea I was curious too if espn or fox sports will be carrying the game.

  12. Aaron in StL says:

Ives – any comment or better information about Jozy’s loan situation? Rumors circulating that he could end up going back to Villareal early due to Hull City’s financial situation.

    link to

Not sure just how precarious it is right now, but would definitely be interesting considering Jozy will really need minutes the next 8 months. I doubt Villareal is his best option.

  13. Aaron in StL says:

Sure about that? Why does he take corners and free kicks with his right?

  14. Kyle says:

Holden is right footed. I grew up playing with him. His little bro is left footed, but that doesn’t help us…

  15. BJR says:

If LA makes the conference final, what happens with Donovan?

  16. Oranje Mike says:

Minus Gooch and Davies I’d give Denmark the edge over us. Even with a stocked & healthy roster I’d probably give the edge to Denmark. They’re a good team. Better than we are.

  17. Eric says:

This roster is much stronger than the C team that we played in LA.

  18. Freddie Footballer says:

I’ve never seen any roster with 7 forwards listed. Wow.

  19. george says:

according to US Soccer the Slovakia match will be on Fox Soccer Channel and the Denmark match on ESPN2

  20. BigB says:

US wont release their roster until after the next set of MLS games.

  21. Jon says:

Well, with the way Villareal have started off their season I do believe an extra striker would give them more goal scoring opportunities. I mean Rossi just scored his first if im not mistaken.

  22. Brian says:

Hmm so if the Galaxy prevail will probably see Bornstein and (*gasp*) Kljestan called up, if not then probably LD and maybe Gonzalez.

  23. Brian says:

    *we’ll probably see

  24. Jon says:

Yeah what’s the deal with MLS players still in the playoffs? Do they get the call up go play one, or two games, then come back? Or simply not even let out by their coaches? I’d rather see Lando go up against the likes of Denmark and Slovakia than Chivas, no offence. If we don’t get our MLS guys then what? Second division European lads? I for one have not given up on Adu, I mean he’s got time on his side, unlike a few of our other forwards/midfielders. Also the other younger guys like, Nugyen or Szetela? Whatever happens I’m just way to ready for that roster, and I would like to see some surprises in the mix.

  25. Socrates says:

    “and maybe Gonzalez.”

    Not this.

  26. Warren says:

There are fifteen teams playing in MLS. Of those, four will be in the playoffs as of next week. That leaves eleven MLS teams to choose players from. Furthermore, the fact that the games will be played on a FIFA date means that Bradley will be able to call up whatever European-based players he wants. However, Bradley will not take Donovan, Holden, or Bornstein if they are still in the playoffs for the sake of a friendly.

  27. Brian says:

That’s why I said maybe. I’ve been real high on him on all season, but he had a terrible game on Sunday.

  28. Brian says:

Too early to tell but let’s say Houston, LA, and Columbus all go on to the next round, then that means no Donovan, Holden, Clark, Ching, Marshall, Hejduk or Rogers.

  29. Warren says:

That is correct. But at the end of the day, this is a ‘friendly’. Coaches would not react favorably if their best players were missing during one or both legs of the Conference Final.

  30. Brett says:

    You dropped something…

  31. Thanks, sort of knew that. My point was straightened out a bit more by Brian. Thing is, there are eleven other MLS teams to chose from but, Bob never picks anyone from those teams. Well, I just don’t wanna get creamed in Europe because we don’t have so many starters.

  32. Brian says:

Eh you got Conor Casey on the Rapids, Jimmy Conrad on the Wizards, and Marvell Wynne and Sam Cronin on TFC.

I’m absolutely positive Casey and Conrad will get the call up, and then if RSL loses to Columbus I’m sure Robbie Findley will get the call as well.

No one on Seattle will get called up if they lose to the Dynamo. Also no one will get called up from Chicago/New England.

As for Chivas/Galaxy, Bob will call up Donovan if the Galaxy lose, and Bornstein (probably Sacha as well) if the Goats lose.

  33. Warren says:

No one from eleven of fifteen teams?

In our last game, two of the starters were from the three teams mentioned by Brian (Donovan and Holden) and two starters from other MLS teams (Bornstein and Casey). The other seven were from Europe. Two of eleven – assuming those teams do qualify – is not “so many” and would not necessitate being ‘creamed’.

  34. Brian says:

Yeah, Jon is completely off. MLS Playoffs are way more important than a friendly. Anyone still involved will be left off.

Also, not sure where he is going with Nguyen, Szetela, and Adu. Nguyen is playing in effin Vietnam, Szetela hardly played for DC United and Adu has made like what? 2 or 3 appearances for Belenenses?

  35. Warren says:

I agree Brian. I was just responding to Jon’s post for the sake of clarification regarding the playoff structure and the players available for the friendly. But good call adding the players I failed to mention. We will be missing a number of players, but it should be a good opportunity for others to solidify their position.

As an aside, Marshall is just coming back from injury, so it might be best to leave him off the roster even if Columbus were to be eliminated.

  36. Murphy says:

    no bendtner?

  37. Alex says:

One of my all time favorite players. He had a tragic life, saw both of his parents murdered. Horrible.

  38. ThaDeuce says:

I too want an update on Chuck Deezy SOON!

  39. My bad, I was referring to the other teams that did not make it to the playoffs. So what’s the best bet on the formation, assuming we do have most MLSers, push Lando or Dempsey up? Or just keep Casey up with Jozy? Plus we get like five subs in friendlies correct? Anyone for bringing in Eddie Johnson? Adu? Or even another stint for Beasly?

  40. Stephen says:

Ok. I am a new user, and this is my first post. I have to say that I do not agree with Donovan up top. Dempsey needs to be up top where there’s less defensive responsibilities. I love Demps, but he doesn’t play D. We also need LD’s distribution in the midfield. Whether it’s from the wing, or from the central position.

  41. scott47a says:

  42. Paul says:

Welcome aboard, Stephen. And you’re absolutely right, by the way.

  43. patrick says:

stephen…. are you suggesting that landon is some sort of lock down defender? I dont think anyone can even rate one higher than the other in terms of defense. Donovan has a higher work rate, but that doesnt always lead to productive defense. It might even be more useful up top, pressuring their backs. If you remember, a while ago, donovan WAS a withdrawn forward when we had a more solid midfield. I wouldnt mind seeing this offense 6:

    jozy— donovan
    dempsey—-bradley– feilhaber– holden

i dont know how it would fare, but i think that formation plays to many of their strengths. Jozy combines well with people and while hes not a holding forward, but he can distribute, and with donovans work rate, he’d always be around him. THe midfield is all capable of playing a quick pass, one touch type game. Bradley’s bite, and holden’s hustle along with some high pressure could be good.

that said, i dont think that our formula for success, but it is tempting, isnt it?

  44. patrick says:

oh, if i didnt make it clear, while theres a good case to put donovan up top, i think right now with the players being picked, he should be in the midfield.

  45. Isaac says:

Your first post is probably the smartest I’ve on this thread….

  46. Isaac says:

    *I’ve SEEN on this thread….

  47. Michael wright says:

  48. jtd says:

that would be a fun lineup to see. and why not? if those front six were hitting all cylinders on match day, that would be an exciting team to watch.

  49. huricano says:

I think their squad is stronger. Maybe with Jones, Subtic, and Rossi we would have the edge.

  50. James says:

Jones is injured. The other two play for other countries. I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make.

  51. middlewest says:

since we’re fantasizing…yeah, i was thinking it’d been great if pele, maradona and messi all played for the US. would’ve been fun.

  52. Brian says:

    I have a goldfish.

Oh, wait what’s that? I thought we were talking about s%*t that doesn’t matter.

  53. Brian says:

Didn’t his father kill his mother and then kill himself?

  54. Brian says:

I’m probably going overboard here but I’m bored and I’m trying to get a better view of what the potential US roster could be, so here’s my prediction of the US roster (depending on how the playoffs play out).

LA, Chivas USA, Houston and Columbus all feature players that have been called up recently to the national team. Donovan, Bornstein, Holden, Clark, Ching, Rogers, Hejduk and Marshall (and possibly Kljestan). RSL has Robbie Findley and Beckerman (I could see Findley getting called up, Beckerman if we’re thin at MF). Seattle, New England, and Chicago really don’t have anyone that would get called up (I highly doubt someone like Rolfe, Pause, Jaqua, Evans or Heaps will get called).

My prediction is that LA, Columbus, Houston, and New England will advance (as far as roster purposes go it probably won’t matter if Chicago or NE advance)

    GK: Howard, Guzan, Perkins (3)
DF: Spector, Bocanegra, Cherundolo, Bornstein, Castillo, Conrad, Goodson, Califf (8)
MF: Dempsey, Bradley, Torres, Feilhaber, Kljestan, Jeremiah White, Edu* (7)
FW: Altidore, Casey, Cooper, Findley, EJ (5)

*Still unsure whether Edu will be healthy by then

Other possible players: Adu, Beasley, Wynne, Oroczo, Gonzalez, Parkhurst, Freeman, Bedoya, Diskerud

Of course, if Chivas advances, take Kljestan and Bornstein off and add Donovan.

If Seattle advances, add Holden, Clark and Ching to the list and remove some of the fringe MF’s and probably EJ.

If RSL advances, add Rogers, Hejduk and Marshall (if he’s fully healthy) and remove Findley

  55. Jozy 9 says:

Use Feilahber & Holden has back up should the game need tweaked due to Beasley or Torres not working out.

As for the back I’ll leave that to the person who gets paid to figure out that mess lol.

  56. harrybalsac says:

fire bradley, just had to be the first wizard to say that.

  57. DC Josh says:

Why shouldn’t Dempsey play on the left, or any wing for that matter? Because he isn’t a winger!!!!! He has no speed, and no crossing ability. The two most important abilities of a winger. He has neat footwork, and a decent shot, and good ability to find the ball with his head. He only plays winger for Fulham because the fullbacks overlap, allowing him to go inside. This also spreads the defense wide, providing more space.

I’m sick and tired of people talking about Dempsey on the wing. He sucks out wide, better inside. Keep Donovan on the left, he is white lightning out there.

  58. DC Josh says:

This is one of the most randomly commented article I’ve seen in a long time. Denmark’s roster is loaded with players in big leagues. I can’t wait to learn more about their players and see them in action.

Are any overseas SBI Mafia members making the trek up north, or south if you live really far up there?

  59. DC Josh says:

    Who’s Beasley?

  60. Stephen says:

Not saying that Donovan is a standout defender, I think he works harder to win the ball than Demps. I also think he works harder to show for the ball than Demps. Demps is good as an attacking player. He scores goals in that position. He looks confused and uncomfortable in the midfield, thus we always get mad at him. If we are worried about speed we should call up Robbie Findley. I just think Donovan’s confidence on the ball and distribution and work rate are invaluable in the midfield. If we want him attacking put his as an attacking midfielder. He is one of the main reasons we won the qualifying group, because of his distribution.

  61. Stephen says:

    Who is Jeremiah White?

  62. Stephen says:

That said, I’m all for switching things up, but I also don’t want to do it so much that it’s a detriment to the team for the WC…you know?

  63. Mike says:

At least they are sending several of their capped players. I’m sick of us playing a Scandinavian C-team (I’m talking to you, Sweden and Norway) that only plays us because they are nearing their short winter off-season.

  64. Brian says:

Plays for AGF Aarhus with Benny. He got a call up last January against Sweden. If you check back on some of Ives’ American’s Abroad Weekend Rewinds, you’ll see that he is a frequent starter. I figured he’d get a call up since we’re playing in Aarhus (similar to the Beckerman and Findley call ups for the World Cup qualifier in Salt Lake)

  65. Warren says:

We do the same. It’s called our winter camp in LA. We do it every year because it’s convenient for both national teams. Our B/C team vs their B/C team. Last year against Sweden, this was our lineup:

    Califf (capt.)
    Parkhurst (Ihemelu, 82)
    Bornstein (Wingert, 79)
    Thorrington (Rolfe, 61)
    R. Clark
    Rogers (Carroll, 69)
    Davies (Cooper, 46)

Does that scream A-team to you?

  66. MakoSH00 says:

We’re likely to see the following players called up for the US in these Friendlies (pending MLS Playoffs):

    GK – Howard, Guzan, Perkings

Def – Boca, Dolo, Spector, Castillo, Pearce, Califf, Goodson, Moor, Purdy, Marshall, Parkhurst, Conrad

Mid – Bradley, Dempsey, Feilharbor, Torres, Adu, Donovan, Holden, Rogers, Clark (Would love Edu and Jones but still out injured)

Stk – Ching, Altidore, Cooper, Casey, Johnson

    I’d love to see a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-1-1 formation.

    In a 3-5-2 I’d play….

Spector (LD) – Boca (CD) – Dolo (RD)

    Bradley (HCM) – Clark (HCM)

    Castillo (LM) – Donovan(CAM) – Holden (RM)

    Altidor – Dempsey

    In a 4-4-1-1 I’d Play

    Castillo – Boca – Marshall – Spector

    Donovan – Bradley – Clark/Torres – Holden

Personally I don’t care for Casey, Adu, Goodson, or Parkhurst. I think Conrad, Ching, and Dolo (maybe) are getting a little beyond their international careers. We need to get some of the younger players some significant time with a Core of Vets. Need to change-up Bob Bradleys tacktics a littel and insert some sparks.

  67. MakoSH00 says:

OH and for Jozy 9…. Beasley should not be called in. He’s not playing for Rangers and played like crap the last 4-6 times he was called up. would rather get rogers and castillo playing the left side than beasley.

  68. Hush says:

LOL It’s Denmark for Gods sake, not a south American power house. I expect us to win this game on the road.

  69. Hush says:

Bring in Adu & Johnson BB. It’s just a freindly, let them get team action.

  70. Brian says:

I doubt Bob calls up 29 players. And Purdy? Steve Purdy? And Drew Moor?

  71. MakoSH00 says:

I agree he won’t call up 29 players. I was just thinking of likely candidates that could/would make since to be called in. And yes Drew Moor and Steve Purdy. With Gooch and DeMerit sidelined with injuries we need to find potential candidates for central defense. As I said I don’t think Jimmy Conrad is a good choice due to age and time away from the “A” squad. Besides we should be grooming some new players as well as getting ready for the WC next year. Just my opinion.
