Europa League: Your Running Commentary

Europa League Logo
Both of the finalists in this year's Europa League will be known today as the second legs of Fulham-Hamburg SV and Liverpool-Atletico Madrid are set to take place.

After a scoreless first leg, Fulham boasts a good chance of reaching the final as it hosts Hamburg (3:00pm, DirecTV). Clint Dempsey will begin today's match at Craven Cottage on the bench.

Liverpool will also play at home (3:00pm, GolTV), but needs to overturn a 1-0 scoreline in order to advance. The hosts will be without Fernando Torres and defender Marvin Skrtel due to injury so getting a victory might prove challenging.

If you will be watching either or both of these matches, please feel free to share thoughts, opinions and play-by-play in the comments section below

    Go Fulham Go!

  2. patrick says:

last europa league game dempsey started on the bench at the cottage, some magical things happened….

  3. William the Terror says:

    Shine, Deuce!

  4. john says:

If Fulham wins UEFA cup, do they qualify for UEFA cup next year?

  5. Dan says:

HSV have been underperforming big time and I expect the shake-up in managers this past week will jolt them out of their sleepwalking. You can be sure that they will play with more precision and determination than when they played Hoffenheim.

  6. Sergio of SF says:

Let’s go Fulham! I think Dempsey gets a goal today.

  7. Ville V says:

Liverpool taking taking it home this year! Let’s get something to remember this season by, wait… on second thought…

  8. DC Josh says:

Hodgson knows what he’s doing. The Whites will keep their shape and shut out Hamburg who will be looking for that vital away goal. The Cottagers hit at least one on the break.

    COME ON!!

  9. Andy in Chicago says:

  10. William the Terror says:

remember this season by beating or tying Chelsea this weekend so that United can win league. my god, that was hard for me to say.

  11. Burlington Chelsea says:

If Fulham win EUFA Cup I think they get a spot in the Champions League next year. Don’t know if it is just in the qualifying rounds or if it is automatic qualification though.

  12. Andrew H. says:

Dempsey is not in the starting lineup.

  13. BurlingtonChelsea says:

And let United tie Liverpool for most League Titles. Not a chance in Hell. Also without Torres Liverpool just aren’t up to beating Chelsea.

  14. Brad says:

Fulham will automatically qualify as the title holder and enters at the group stage

  15. Brad says:

This is only for the Europa League, they will not qualify for the Champions League.

  16. patrick says:

yes, we know, it was mentioned in the post

  17. William the Terror says:

i fear you are correct. but, the game is in Liverpool, so you never know. btw: i thought they were already tied. i thought that if United won this year it broke the tie. is that incorrect?

p.s. grew up across the lake in Plattsburgh, N.Y. now, you are making me despise Burlington in addition to Chelsea. that’s just not right, sir!

  18. Andrew H. says:

Got it. Didn’t read it close enough.

  19. carlton banks says:

crap, anybody know of a live feed?

  20. BurlingtonChelsea says:

Haha. it is actually Burlington KY right outside Cincinnati. I also think you are right about them being tied. Even more reason for them not to let United reel in the title this year. Cheers.

  21. Barry U says:

Is Roy parking the bus? No Duece is questionable in my opinion. Especially after how Clint played on Sunday vs. Everton.

  22. ga-gone says:

check, there are a few feeds

  23. ga-gone says:

    1. If they allow a goal they need to score 2, so yes he’s parking it a bit.

    2. The game could go 120 minutes. I’m certain Deuce will feature at some point. No worries yet.

  24. Lester says:

    Wow, what a strike.

  25. Wolfgang Depner says:

  26. Petaluman says:

    Fulham needs two now.

  27. Devon says:

    Bring on Dempsey!

  28. FulhamPete says:

    Uh oh…

  29. ga-gone says:

    Que golazo!

Well, we know Fulham need 2 at least now, and the game cannot go to extra time, so that changes coaching decisions quite a bit.

  30. DC Josh says:

Am I the only one that thinks the “touch the goalie and it’s a foul” rule is stupid? The goalie has the advantage of using their hands in a 50/50. BS.

  31. ga-gone says:

If Fulham can just sneak one right before half-time….

  32. carlton banks says:

    perfect thx

  33. Niccollo says:

ya… im pretty sure they will NOT be given a group stage spot automatically. However, they will be allowed in qualification i think. Last year when my team Shakhtar won the cup they had to qualify still. Not sure if Europa League is that different.

And if you could get a spot into the group stages of the CL by winning the EL then im 100% positive RAFA would have mentioned at least once

  34. Niccollo says:

ya im under the impression that they are already tied…

  35. madmax says:

Agger offside on Liverpool goal. He lined up offside and made a small attempt to get back on before ball was struck. I’ve seen more and more players using this tactic which doesn’t make sense to me. Why are managers allowing it?

  36. Aristophanes says:

come on you whites. 2 goals is nothing

  37. DAMMIT says:

fulham creating NOTHING, this does not look good. and no dempsey yet??? what is the coach thinking, he’s been stellar especially in europa league matches this year.

  38. Barry U says:

I agree. Have you seen a goalie punch someone in the face when trying to punch the ball out? But a field player wiht his leg up for a 50/50 is a yellow or sometimes a red not sure i see the difference.

  39. ga-gone says:

Yes he has been stellar, so trust him, I imagine Clint is in the lineup to start the second half.

  40. Judging Amy says:

Agreed, questionable not to start demps. A bit too conservative considering Fulhams at home. That being said, demps is surely going to come on early in the second.

  41. patrick says:

do you understand how a home and away works? one hamburg goal means fulham has to score 2. 0 hamburg goals means fulham has to make 1 more PK than hamburg, so wouldn’t you take a more conservative approach? I wonder how many people know Hodgson won the EUFA cup already? Unless you have messi, ronaldinho kaka and C ronaldo, every team in this situation is going to play conservative.

  42. reverb says:

At least Atletico is playing the game against Liverpool, unlike one “special” Italian team…

  43. RK says:

And look where that has gotten them.

  44. no says:

conservative, well um look where it has gotten them, now they have to dig themselves out of a big hole, and they haven’t created any really good clear cut chances yet

  45. ThaDeuce says:

Roy should put in Dempsey for Zamora. He is around 85 percent. Time to get him out of there for the team’s sake.

  46. Judging Amy says:

Sure if you get scored on you have to score 2. Sure you play conservative. Benching Demps in no way guarantees you don’t get scored on however, as I’m sure you noticed.

Hodgson has done excellent work with Fulham. My comment was a very minor gripe more related to my fanboyism for Demps than an attempt to point out deficiencies in Hodgson’s coaching.

  47. ThaDeuce says:

If he doesn’t, i think its his fatal flaw. too loyal to a hurt player in the big game. Anyway, he knows what Dempsey can do. juventus

  48. ThaDeuce says:

If fulham lose, do they get back into Europa next year?

  49. Wolfgang Depner says:

  50. Judging Amy says:

Ahh my feeds cut out. Is demps in to start the half?

  51. ga-gone says:

Wondering if Hodgson is waiting for Hamburg to make a sub first before reacting.

  52. ThaDeuce says:

    that is a waste.

  53. Wolfgang Depner says:

  54. ThaDeuce says:

not even warming up, and zamora is hurt.

  55. Andrew H. says:

    Deuce coming in.

  56. David says:

While I agree Dempsey should be in the game now people have to remember he played the full 90 on Sunday and is coming off of a thigh injury. I assume he comes on for Bobby or Davies at the 60 minute mark. For some reason roy has mostly used him as a sub in Europe.

  57. Wolfgang Depner says:

    Here comes Deuce…

  58. ThaDeuce says:

    Dempsey warming up now.

  59. Andrew H. says:

  60. ThaDeuce says:

What happened to Dempsey’s right hand? Is that a cast?

  61. ga-gone says:

Zamore off, Dempsey on. Clint immediately wins a corner

  62. fadf says:

immediate impact by dempsey for a corner, should have started him

  63. ga-gone says:

who cares. strikers don’t need hands! score us some goals Deuce!

  64. ThaDeuce says:

Dempsey in, and Gera has stepped it up

  65. carl says:

the introduction of dempsey has single handedly energized a fulham team that looked way too lax before him. should have started this match

  66. KungFuSoccer says:

Fullham with a number of good opportunities. Will it happen, or will they get nailed on the counter.

  67. David says:

He is a big game player. His brilliant moments tend to come against big opponents and not the Hull City or Burnleys of the world.

  68. Judging Amy says:

holy s! what a great goal by davies!

  69. Andrew H. says:

    Awesome goal by Davies!!!

  70. carl says:

  71. ga-gone says:

  72. ThaDeuce says:

  73. KungFuSoccer says:

    awsome goal fulham

  74. ga-gone says:

Davies hurts himself while scoring the greatest goal of his career

  75. DC Josh says:

    game on le’s go!!!!!!!!

  76. carl says:

I’d put my money on dempsey with the winner

  77. KungFuSoccer says:

Time for Dempsey to earn his status as a fulham legend.

  78. malkin says:

Commentator just mentioned “big goals” of Fulham history and mentioned a goal from Danny Murphey to keep them in the premier league.

Didn’t Dempsey score against Liverpool a few years ago to keep them in the premier league???

  79. KungFuSoccer says:

  80. wolfgang depner says:

  81. Judging Amy says:

    YES! Wow is right!

  82. RK says:

Davies with his first goal of the season, and then gets the assist on the 2nd.

  83. Bumble says:

    Gera Scores! 2-1 Fulham

  84. ga-gone says:

Gonna be a nervous 10-13 minutes here.

  85. Isaac says:

now now! wait to the end of the game!!!!

  86. patrick says:

never seen clint with his wrist/hand taped up…. sprained wrist?

  87. montana matt says:

    Go st. pauli! Gegen HSV!

  88. Isaac says:

  89. ga-gone says:

van nistelrooy has a chance to win it and sends it wide…. scary stuff

  90. RK says:

The “other” match goes to extra time.

  91. Judging Amy says:

  92. RK says:

Dempsey card in the 93rd. Hope he hasn’t accumulated.

  93. KungFuSoccer says:

    Great win for Fulham.

  94. Brad says:

Is there OT or straight to penalties? OT wouldn’t help Liverpool or Atletico, both are equally inept today…

  95. Mo says:

Dempseys 1st yellow of the KO stages

  96. ThaDeuce says:

    what a game!

I’d say best all year, but now they have a chance to win the FINAL

  97. NK says:

Was it just me, or was Dempsey moving a bit slowly the last about 10 minutes-he kinda came down funny on his left leg about 10 minutes before time-he didn’t figure much in the game after that really…God I hope not.

  98. john says:

if liverpool gets UEFA qualification spot from 5/6 place in EPL and they go through the finals, would Fulham automatically get a UEFA spot too?

  99. ga-gone says:

extra time has just started @ Anfield. Come on Atletico! I don’t want an all-English final.

  100. ga-gone says:

I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure Fulham need to win the whole thing.

  101. ThaDeuce says:

now that they are in the final, are they assured a spot?

  102. ThaDeuce says:

    It was actually quite something!

  103. john says:

really? but Wouldnt Liverpool filled two UEFA spots? someone gotta take one away? would that be the 7th place team in EPL?

  104. reverb says:

It’s gotten them a lot of new fans, a lot of respect from Liverpool, a lot of chances to win the game outright and an indisputable justification of being in the Final if they make it.
If you are trying to imply that Atletico allowed in a goal because of their play, so did Inter yesterday and they weren’t even playing.

  105. ga-gone says:

some other European league would get it, im pretty sure. Someone would be bumped up from the qualification round to the playoff round, and someone way down the pecking order would get another slot. They dont really want 4-5 slots from a country.

Fulham still have a very good chance of getting a spot through the FIFA Fair Play iniitiative though.

  106. ga-gone says:

Liverpool scores. Atletico have 25 mins to score one to go through on away goals.

  107. jts says:

    L’pool goal

  108. john says:

    all EPL final… nice!

  109. Rekro says:

Congrats Fulham from a Villa fan. What Roy has done since he came to the Craven Cottage has been quite impressive. Hopefully you guys beat looserpool/atletico and Clint can win his first. Good luck.

    Up The Villa.

  110. ga-gone says:

btw – did anyone else notice Dempsey pick up a cheap yellow in the final seconds there? i REALLY hope he wasn’t one short of a suspension. would really be heartbreaking to miss the final.

  111. Paul says:

Atletico pull one back in extra time… 2-2 and they have the away goal!

  112. NK says:

He hasn’t gotten a card in any of the knockout stage matches, so if it goes back that far, he’ll be fine.

  113. Rekro says:

Oh Sh*t, Forlan coming through for Madrid.

  114. Paul says:

Half time of extra time… L’pool with 15 mins to score or they’re out. If Atletico scores again, it really is all over.

  115. Brad says:

Did you see how Kuyt went down covering his face like Mike Tyson just broke his nose?

Fifa needs to come down on that stuff, just as bad as diving…

  116. Andy in Chicago says:

Can’t believe what Fulham has accomplished. I’m practically in tears. This is the proudest I have ever been of this team!

  117. Aaron in StL says:

Would be nice if Atletico could pull this out. Really hoping Aguero doesn’t go to Chelsea

  118. Judging Amy says:

  119. Paul says:

How could you be proud of getting a fellow pro sent off by doing that? Yeah, Mom, look how I won us the game… :)

  120. Judging Amy says:

    such a brave performance.

  121. Paul says:

Liverpool lost this semifinal the minute Fernando Torres was ruled out with injury. Easy to say, but it’s true. Just not the same threat without him.

  122. nam says:

Kuyt with another Oscar worthy performance, pitiful.

  123. Brad says:

what’s aguero going to do at Chelsea anyway? Going to sit like Benzema at Real with Drogba and Anelka in front of him or actually play?

  124. Paul says:

Aguero deserves a team worthy of his ability though. Not saying it’s Chelsea.

  125. MadKingGeorge says:

Fulham had a lucky draw. I think if they would have faced Atl. Madrid or Liverpool they would have lost today. It was a great win but who ever they face they will lose in the Final.

As for Dempsey playing in the final, is it really so special to play against a team who got knocked out of the champions league group stage? If you are not in the Champions League final then you might as well be playing in the Boy Scouts Final. There is only one final that is worth anything.

  126. Paul says:

Europa is the poor man’s Champions League and everyone knows it. But it’s the best Fulham can hope for since they’ve never been anywhere near the CL. It’s a big moment in their history, just as it would be to reach the FA Cup final. If you’d been a Fulham fan all your life, you’d relish this.

  127. Judging Amy says:

Man liverpool just has nothing for atletico. they seem tired, wonder how much this’ll affect the chelsea match this wknd.

  128. Ted says:

Please no one respond to this idiot baiting, except me of course.

  129. mcjoness says:

    I will fight you.

  130. Paul says:

Fulham v Atletico in the final, May 12

  131. Aaron in StL says:

Atletico is worthy, they just need to get their finances in order. But they probably won’t be able to pay like an EPL club would.

  132. Rekro says:

I guess it won’t be an all English final after all. Congratulations to Fulham and Atletico Madrid. Good luck in Hamburg.

  133. ga-gone says:

Yes. Fulham v Atletico was my preferred matchup. Sorry Liverpool – this season = epic fail

  134. Brad says:

now liverpool get to look forward to chelsea on sunday…

    Chelsea 4 Liverpool 1

  135. paul says:

Anyone know what channel the final will be on?

  136. Brad says:

“Diego Forlan scores goals against Liverpool just for fun.” -Ray Hudson

  137. patrick says:

playing in the finals of ANY fifa sanctioned tournament, whether it be international or club is a BIG deal. THey knocked out/beaten juventus, shaktar, roma, wolfsburg, and you claim they had a lucky draw? You can only play the opponents on the field and right now, fulham has done just that.

In the last calendar year dempsey has now played or will play in the final of 2 major tournaments (3 including the world cup), won the bronze boot award at the confeds cup, scored against brazil AND spain, and helped end spains winning streak and along the way chipped fulham into the semis of europa and had a stunner against stoke. Lets hope he caps it all off with a nice performance this summer

  138. patrick says:

fyi the game is being replayed at 8 on one of the fsc channels

  139. Tom says:

My Whites are playing for the Cup!!! Fulham For Life!

  140. L says:

Dempsey could be the first American to play in the final of a European Competition

  141. Aristophanes says:

    FULHAM FC!!!!!!!!!! Wow amazing!

  142. Patrick says:

From almost twice relegated to the inaugural Europa League final.

Davies with a bit magic and Zoltan raising the non-existent roof.

Proud day, but there’s still one more hill to climb.

  143. Eric_the_king says:

Uhh… seriously reverb? What kind of uneducated statement is that? If any club in the world were down to 10 men against Barcelona for 2/3 of a 2nd leg match in the Camp Nou with a 3-1 aggregate lead, they would do the exact same thing. This isn’t street ball. There’s a thing called tactics and they’re just as vital as the team you select – particularly in the Champions League. You’d have no choice but to play it tight and try and spring the counter against Barca in that scenario. Unless of course you’d like to get eaten alive by Messi and company. Damn the “Special One” for being so tactically “special”. What a terrible coach. Maybe next time he should employ a 3-3-3 in that instance? Would that work better for you?

  144. ThaDeuce says:

Wow, so I just watched this: link to
In the end it sounds like Roy is bidding adieu to fulham football. Fabiols replacement?

THey really have been a special team. I think a club career highlight for all the players and the coach, good on for Dempsey.

  145. Brett says:

The one they are talking about is the goal that finished of “the great escape” year before last. Murphy scored away at Portsmouth to keep Fulham up.
