USMNT to add a RED third jersey

Ever wonder why the U.S. men's national team has gone so long without a red jersey to go with the various white and blue uniforms to come out throughout the years?

Wonder no more.

The U.S. national team will unveil a red third jersey that will be availabe in April. No details yet on the design of the jersey, but USA fans have been clamoring for a red jersey for some time. It's a natural addition considering red is the color of choice for many U.S. national team fans.

What do you think of the idea of a red national team jersey? Will you be getting one? Still want to see how it looks first?

unless Nike totally botches the design (which i highly doubt will happen), i’ll be ordering it day 1.

  2. otergod says:

    i wouldnt care. A red US jersey?? I’ll buy 2 😛

  3. MrTuktoyaktuk says:

They better make a lot, people have been waiting for this for a long time.

  4. WeatherManNX01 says:

Assuming it’s the same one (which I think likely), the red one leaked last year well before the World Cup. Same design as the other two, with a blue sash.

Not bad, but it’d be better with a white sash.

  5. Josh D says:

Red with a white stripe makes the most sense to me…

  6. Tim says:

Yeah, thought we already had that jersey, lol . . . about time though . . . I just want us to get away from the arrogance of wearing white jerseys all the time.

  7. DYCSoccer17 says:

I wonder if it will be the red shirt with the blue slash that was circulating when they released the kit for the 2010 World Cup? I somehow doubt that, though. I think they will do another overhaul.

  8. DYCSoccer17 says:

    What’s arrogant about wearing white?

  9. Tyler says:

Third jerseys for national teams are a total cash-grab. We hardly wear the current away! Even if we designate this as the official away jersey for the Gold Cup or something, it’ll probably only see the field once.

But, having said that…I’ve always wanted a red US jersey so I don’t mind this one as much. Hope they pair it with navy shorts on the field.

  10. Hopper says:

This is way overdue. Sam’s Army wears red, so should the Nats. Can’t wait to see it.

  11. Tim says:

Teams that wear white definitely come off as snobbish to me (Real – though that’s my favorite team, Galaxy, Red Bulls, England, Dallas Cowboys, lol). When everybody wears white for road jerseys, it seems arrogant to take white as a home jersey to rarely have to swap it out. It also seems like an absence of having a team color. It’s boring.

  12. CrazyJon says:

  13. hendricks says:

    you wannabe Canadians!

  14. Brad says:

Good move. I hope they make sizes that would fit dudes like Ives and myself.

  15. ventur514 says:

    That wasn’t a leak, it was just a mock-up.

  16. Nick says:

If it looks like this link to I’ll buy it. Let’s be honest, I’ll buy it either way.

  17. YES!! I still rock my DTOM jersey. I have the red training jersey too from a couple of years back that is not too shabby but it will be cool to have a “real” jersey.

  18. DYCSoccer17 says:

It doesn’t make sense to have a red kit to me, given the fact that T & T, Canada, Costa Rica, and Panama all wear red…

  19. MJC-DC says:

Alot of those teams wear white because in American sports it is traditional for the away team to wear white. I agree we should have a third but for the diversity, not because white is snobbish.

  20. rick says:

    About f%#$%# time!

  21. MJC-DC says:

Should add in some cases it is reveresed “home” whites.

  22. Nicholas says:

Finally. Now change the crest to something a little less logo-ey.

  23. BK says:

It’s about time. I actually emailed US Soccer headquarters about this. Clearly, I made the difference:-)

  24. Troy says:

Will this make them not give up early goals anymore?

  25. The Grahammer says:

We’ve known it was coming for some time…expected to go on sale 4/1 and rumors abound that the Yanks may wear them in one of the March friendlies. Can’t wait!

  26. Mike Caramba says:

Any word on color of shorts? Blue?

  27. bryan says:

it’ll go nicely with my new red DCU Chuck Deezy jersey.

  28. Brian says:

  29. Colin says:

There’s plenty of countries in CONCACAF and int’l that have white and blue kits too…

  30. K-Town says:

Blue socks, blue shorts, Red shirt with a white stripe. That is what I wanna see fielded.

  31. Joe says:

    You have a long nose.

  32. K-Town says:

I hope it is blue shorts. All red would be too much. White shorts wouldnt look right to me. Too much like England’s away kit.

  33. Carboni says:

Whatever happened to this blue/pinstriped one? I thought it was cool.

    link to

  34. Diver Down says:

Has to be with a White sash.

Then when another Italian player crumples to the ground the USMNT player can stand over him with his “DIVE FLAG” jersey to point it out to the blind refs. (Search scuba dive flag if you don’t get it).

Would be cool to have a new design (don’t love the sash jerseys that much).

  35. Gacm32 says:

I’m so stoked for this to come out. I’ll be ordering one on the first day for sure. Since I already have Deuce’s in blue, I figure I should get Stu’s. Either that or Jermaine’s.

  36. Gacm32 says:

Why would we ever want to be Canadian? That’s the worst suggestion ever.

  37. Allen23 says:

Does Sams Army even still exist?

  38. Allen23 says:

Don’t mess with the crest. It has been around for 15+ years now without a change. The only think i would add is a star over the top in 2014

  39. Allen23 says:

Now if they would bring back the blue windcraft flag, I would be all set.

  40. Rusty Shackleford says:

Playing white jerseys are much cooler in the summer. Its all strategy.

  41. Scott A says:

  42. Hopper says:

I agree. I think the current US Soccer logo looks very amateur. We could use something a bit more classic looking. Something to show how much the team has grown since the early ’90s.

  43. bryan says:

one of the best jerseys ever. it was the Copa America 2007 jersey. i got mine with Dempsey on it…of course, he wasn’t there. i guess that’s on me for buying it before the roster was announced. but i LOVE that jersey.

  44. gtv says:

All white first choice, blue change strip.

  45. MicahK says:

Why would they add a star we have not won a world cup. Stars on a jersey represent how many championships you won.

  46. majormajormajormajor says:

meh. I always loved how the team wears blue/white while our supporters wear red. I don’t know why, but for me a red jersey would just seem… strange. Like someone else said, it seems like a cash grab.

  47. USA_A_OK says:

So it takes 20 years for the color red to lose it association with being a commie?

  48. Dennis says:

I recall some study claimed that in professional sports, the team wearing red were more likely to win than teams in any other color.

    Can’t hurt!

  49. SJ Drew says:

I think that’s why he said, “add it in 2014″…

  50. alex says:

love that one… still wear mine.

  51. Colin says:

There are far worse logos for federations than ours. What makes logos “classic” or not is their age. Give our current logo about 50 years and it’ll have the “classic” look.

  52. Tommy says:

I will believe it when I see it. If they do come out, I am buying at least 3. Maybe more so I can sell them on ebay in a couple of years.

  53. Brit says:

I personally nominate Brian Philips to design a new crest. Dude knows a crazy lot about US Soccer in its glory days in the 1920s and could pull off a beautiful combination of new and old

  54. HoboMike says:

Actually, in most cases, the home team wears white, with the exception of football (and now hockey). Basketball, baseball, college sports, etc.

  55. MiamiAl says:

The “Don’t Tread on Me” jersey was easily the best jersey the U.S. has ever had! They should re-issue that one! Mine got destroyed in the wash and cannot find a replacement anywhere!

  56. chris says:

    please no sash

  57. American says:

  58. scott simon says:

    Thank God! Finally!!!!

I hope it’s a good design that is unique to the USA.

I hate seeing the same basic design for all other national teams that Nike sponsors! I mean really? Nike can’t create original designs for the US?! Nike is an American company! C’mon guys!

  59. Dominghosa says:

awesome. just awesome. april, hurry up.

  60. Adam M. says:

Agreed. What do the stars mean, and why is the middle one bigger? Why is the ball going up at that angle? Why blue stripes when the stripes on our flag are red and white? Why US and not USA? Why the cartoony font? We can do better.

  61. RB says:

Too bad if it only turns out to be that same god-awful red with blue sash design already seen…

  62. GJJ says:

Ok. I bought the blue prom queen model from the last world cup. Didn’t really like it, but it was the team jersey. This one better be an improvement. It kills me to say it, but I really like England’s red jersey. Don’t get too “sporty” on us. We’ve been playing the game a long time and the jersey should look classic and classy.

  63. Pai says:

I like the Red idea but Nike’s designs have always been awful on all of the merchandise…not just the jerseys. USA needs a rebrand after the successful World Cup.

  64. Pai says:

The crest is awful…US needs to be rebranded to USA with a new logo. It is a new era in US soccer…

  65. Oda says:

Please no Beauty Pageant Sash…Worst ever idea to put on a football jersey

  66. America's Game says:

Rebrand with a new logo and Puma…USA

  67. IrishQuake says:

    About time!

  68. Lars says:

This logo is so 1980’s….Weak Sauce

  69. Grant says:

The reason it’s U.S. and not USA is because the country’s name is the United States. Ever notice it’s POTUS or SCOTUS instead of POTUSA or SCOTUSA? Ever notice that before the State of the Union the Sargeant at Arms yells, “Mr. Speaker, the President of the United States!” without the “America” added on after. The federation is also the United States Soccer Federation, known as U.S. Soccer, not the United States of America Soccer Federation. Plus, it differentiates us from the other sports federations like USA Basketball. I also hate how SportsCenter tries to use the name “Team USA,” but ask yourself if you’ve ever heard of Wayne Rooney playing for “Team England” or Leo Messsi playing for “Team Argentina?” If were known as the U.S. or United States that tendency is less.

  70. Grant says:

Tell that to River Plate. Tell that to Peru. Tell that to Real Madrid and Southapton and the Galaxy, who wore it as their original kit. A sash is one of the traditional template kits in football just like solids, hoops, stripes, quarters, chevrons, and halves. If all you see is a beauty pagent sash, a) you watch too many beauty pagents, and b) you don’t know your history.

  71. Brett says:

Personally, I’d like to see the 2006 World Cup white top style. Red shirt with half blue and half white vertical stripe going down the badge side of the shirt, and blue shorts (don’t want too much red and red tops with white shorts screams England). I always thought that 2006 white top was a clean look.

  72. joel says:

    cool sounds good to me…

  73. OmarVizquel says:

I agree with all of this.

  74. Kasper says:

Maybe USA Soccer should start selling GK jerseys as well.

  75. rob says:

They used to–particularly the original nike design with the horizontal stripes. This was when the goalkeeper kit was the same template as the team kit.

Ever since nike has switched to using a generic template for the ‘keeper (i.e. the same one all nike-outfitted teams’ keepers use) they have been harder to find, but you can occasionally find one on ebay.

  76. Lorenzo says:

Who else is red in CONCACAF? Canada, Panama, T&T, Costa Rica? USA should have 3 jerseys always, two main ones and an alternate.

  77. It is a third kit. Meaning they won’t wear it often. Besides, they aren’t going to wear red against Costa Rica or T&T.

  78. Mason says:

A shirt gules with bend argent?

  79. Mito says:

Too bad Nike makes awful jerseys, not to mention their other tacky clothing and shoes. It’s time for USSF to drop Nike for Adidas or Pumas.

  80. MOCSoccer says:

USSF will not be dropping nike anytime soon considering they are an American based company

  81. soccerroo says:

If this is the jersey. I would not buy it.

  82. Joamiq says:

This is the best decision US Soccer has made in a long time. Those DTOM Send Off jerseys are still the best thing the MNT has ever worn.
