Eight members of the Mexican national team set to play in Copa America have been sent home after a scandal involving the players bringing prostitutes to their hotel rooms.

The eight players, one of which was Barcelona defender Jonathan Dos Santos, were accused of bringing prostitutes into their hotel in Quito, Ecuador. The incident came to light after several players reported having items stolen from their hotel rooms, only have hotel security footage show the players letting in the prostitutes, as well as some would-be robbers.

Israel Jimenez, Nestor Vidrio, dos Santos, Marco Fabian, Jorge Hernandez, Javier Cortes, David Cabrera and Nestor Calderon were the eight players, all of which have been suspended from the national team for six months. They have been replaced on the roster by the following eight players: Kristian Alvarez, Antonio Gallardo, Edgar Pacheco, Alan Pulido, Emilio Orrantia, Ulises Davila, Diego de Buen and Oswaldo Alanis.

  1. Colo Colo says:

Dont know how a USA B team can be worse than the team Mexico is putting in

  2. Jolivernyc says:

Looks like they ate a different kind of “tainted chicken.”

  3. patrick says:

at least they were women…. right, ronaldo?

  4. Topher says:

You watch the match the other night?

  5. Topher says:

Meant in reply to “Colo Colo”.

  6. Dan says:

    You stay classy Mexico!

  7. BenH says:

Not condoning it, but isn’t this fairly commonplace in professional sports? NFL, NBA, doesn’t matter.

Guessing they just got in trouble because it came out due to their being robbed? Doesn’t seem like big deal to me otherwise…

  8. fischy says:

How come you never hear about this stuff with women’s teams?

  9. jonk says:

Presumably a violation of team rules to have any women (let alone prostitutes) in their rooms while they are in camp with the national team. So the rules a federation imposes on its players while in camp has nothing to do with what is commonplace in American professional sports.

  10. jonk says:

If that turns out to be the case, let’s see if CONMEBOL responds as harshly as they did to the US fielding a weak team in the Copa 4 years ago.

  11. christian says:

Drama Queens…I swear they make headlines every tourney they play in, yet somehow they always do great! don’t recognize of the nanes they called in but nice/scary to see they have such a deep pool of players.

  12. Dustin says:

Can someone please explain to me why the CONMEBOL threatens to never invite the United States to Copa America again because we sent a 2nd tier team and Mexico gets a pass. All Football in the Western Hemisphere is a bunch of hypocrites.

  13. christian says:

because Mexico equals money for Conmebol. Concacaf agreed to let them play along with Costa Rica but only with their U-22 teams. That is also why Mexico stays in Libertadores, Conmebol can’t afford to lose Mexico.

  14. BenH says:

Advertising by Mexican companies and the viewership Mexico’s national team provides in Mexico and US make up a huge portion of Copa America’s revenues.

  15. roger says:

hahaha! they should book a room for the players “strictly intercourse” then items wont be stolen.

  16. Ike says:

Didn’t know J. Dos Santos had become a defender.

I now wonder how this team will do with a u-22 c-team.

  17. Brad says:

Is it me or doe the pic of Dos Santos above make him look like he has the body of a 40 yr old shoemaker?

  18. RichP says:

When the doctors tell them they’ve tested positive for Chlamydia, they’ll say, “Well, the US puts that in their chicken! That’s why!”

  19. Dude Abides says:

I am surprised that Mexico did not include Bornstein as one of their replacements — since he is the player who led them to victory in the Gold Cup Final!!

  20. Wow, those guys just keep making things worse for themselves.

  21. Jess says:

He’s is actually pregnant in that pic.

  22. Myles B says:

LOL, totally beat me to it!

  23. bottlcaps says:

At last the secrets of Mexican futbol have been revealed!!!.

Didn’t the Tijuana team get promoted to the Mexican 1st league this year. The last time I was in TJ, about a year ago we cruised through the Zona Norte (the redlight district), my friend could have SWORN he saw Dos Santos and another mexican player getting out of a car next to the Hong Kong Club. We razzed him about this all the way home. Turns out he was probably right!!

  24. Dude Abides says:

Lucky for them Chicharito was not on the team, otherwise Ronaldo would have some company.

  25. YO says:

So they did not have the chicken, instead they ate the fish, fortunately the fish is not tainted or at least they hope, either way they get away with everything. The new Mexican slogan -Sex, drugs, and dive!

  26. CrispyST3 says:

Gio dos santos must be tellin his bro, “Wow, really dude? Really? You’re an idiot”
Atleast thats what i’d be telling him.

  27. EA says:

“Mexican players suspended for tainted meat.”

Should just recycle the headline from three weeks ago.

  28. Jimmy Bobo says:

Pretty dumb of the Mexican players to get ripped off by the whoores and then report the crime!! Who did they think stole their stuff? Now, they look like idiots. I wonder how many of these Mexicans are married. Whoremongering in Ecuador…what fun!!!

  29. primoone says:

In a related matter, it is being reported that all prostitutes involved in the incident have now tested positive for Clenbuterol.

  30. primoone says:

Howver, they were contaminated through the consumption of Beef.

  31. Tomas says:

    well done…

  32. kingsnake says:

At least the Mexicans have a reason for celebrating with prostitutes, unlike a certain other national team they recently slaughtered …

  33. Jason B says:

    Tube steak, in fact.

  34. dcm says:

    ha! funny. painful but funny.

  35. Aquaman says:

You know how I know Vela and Salcido weren’t there? No references to trannies in your story.

  36. bigprof says:

didnt you guys see the spanish ceremony for Gold cup final in US? its all about the dough that the Mex national team can bring in. Same goes w/conmebol since Mex has strongest economy. US federation is hooked on the dough Mex team can bring in, and so is s. america. they’ll be invited back.

  37. Aquaman says:

I guess technically I can include Juarez, Gio Dos Santos and Barrera since they were all either fined or banned also.

  38. Aquaman says:

I’m sure Gio was actually saying “Was Gema there? Tell her I say ‘what’s up’!”

  39. Danny says:

Isn’t it funny how the only headlines Jona DS seems to make is how he manages to be sent home from tournaments?

  40. Jeff Awesome says:

This is the kind of Mexican self-destruction the US was counting on in the Gold Cup… usually it never fails.

  41. funtime says:

    Leave them alone. Just kids.

  42. Jamie says:

Men will have sex for free.

  43. Mingjai says:

Nice… Chicken is Chinese slang for hooker…

  44. Joamiq says:

… They brought hookers to their rooms and then complained about stolen items? Morons.

  45. Modibo says:

Yeah, the robbery has everything to do with it.

The hotel has a reputation to defend as well. They are going to look after their interests, and if the players have basically accused the hotel of having lax security, guess what? They’re going to do their investigation and publicize it to show that their guests can stay there without getting robbed.

  46. Joamiq says:

Wait, why are U-22 professional soccer players paying for sex in the first place??

  47. Russell says:

Let’s see what happens in 2013. Would be great if the US could get the Invite then, when Mexico will be otherwise occupied.

Maybe this is exactly the pendulem type moment to make that happen.

Or wait. Is this tourney once every 2 or 4 years?

  48. fifawitz1313 says:

Where were our prostitutes to get players from the A team sent home before the GC final? Man they really weren’t doing their part to help us win.

  49. Dan says:

Getting robbed by prostitutes is not “fairly commonplace.” But never underestimate Mexico’s soccer team.

  50. HoboMike says:

Um, no, it’s not commonplace. Professional athletes nailing groupies is commonplace. Professional athletes paying for prostitutes is not.

  51. Ike says:

The US federation? I think you meant the Concacaf.

  52. Papi39 says:

Exactly….Mexico conceivably would have brought more mixed (Veteran Vs. Youth) team to begin with but the decision came from CONCACAF that they could only play with their U23/Olympic style rules allowing five overrage players….Very disappointing, I was looking forward to seeing guys like Jona, Calderon, and Fabian play in this tournament.

  53. Ike says:

Use to be every 2 years, now every 4

  54. Papi39 says:

Copa Am. is every 4 years….

  55. Eurosnob says:

Yeh, the future of Mexican soccer looks really bright! At least, after reporting the theft, these players stand an outside chance that their stolen i-pads and i-phones will be found in Quito. This should help them sleep well at night.

  56. HoboMike says:

We need no motivation whatsoever, financial or otherwise.

  57. carry on says:

They don’t have attraction skills so they had to pay for it… twice, bwahahaha

  58. christian says:

  59. RK says:

    de puta madre!

  60. RK says:

You never hear anything about any women’s teams. Except Germany’s women…

  61. Soccer Guy says:

I’ve always said that Mexico is pure class.

  62. Martha says:

Were they tranny’s like last time? Someone PLEASE rehash the Salcido n tranny pic

  63. JP says:

Can’t believe the US bypassed a chance to play in the Copa America… Great development opportunitty… MLS season getting in the way…

  64. Jolivernyc says:

I’m glad a few people found this funny

  65. KC says:

What chance? The US was not invited to play. This tournament is for big boys only

  66. Brian says:

I heard Gio was the tranny prostitute.

  67. Brian says:

Bypassed? You have to get invited homes.

  68. Paul C says:

You really have no idea what you’re talking about.

I don’t want to sound snobby at all, but I run in these circles of athletes, entertainers, etc.

Pay them, they keep their mouths closed (most of the time).

Groupies? Spewing info the moment they get their skirt back up.

And yes, it is a more than frequent occurrence.

  69. Jose says:

Interesting video showing the prostitutes entering. link to noticias.univision.com

  70. dsantos327@gmail.com says:

    Yea “homes”! Lol

  71. AdamFromMich says:

Shouldn’t they have learned from what happened to the Egyptian National team at the last Confederation’s Cup?
