Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

It's the best day of the year (at least for some soccer fans).

Today marks the start of the English Premier League season, the first real sign that European soccer is back in full swing, and American soccer fans will have plenty of juicy match-ups to make this special day enjoyable.

Clint Dempsey and Fulham begin their campaign by playing host to Eric Lichaj and Aston Villa, while Stuart Holden's Bolton welcomes Queens Park Rangers to the Premier League. Revamped Liverpool is also in action today against Sunderland. These are just some of the EPL match-ups on tap.

The EPL isn't the only league kicking off today. France brings us Ligue 1 action, with revamped Paris St. Germain taking the field, while the Under-20 World Cup knockout rounds bring us the juicy Portugal-Argentina and Mexico-Colombia battles.

And then there's MLS, where the Philadelphia Union plays host to FC Dallas in a match that was already a headliner BEFORE it was slated to be Freddy Adu's debut for the Union.

If you will be watching today's action, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

  1. viva nashvegas! says:

    and… here… we… go

  2. Chris says:

On at 3:00pm there’s a team who’s name is Brest playing? I think I found a new favorite team.

  3. The Dude says:

Congrats, Eurosnobs! Your lives are meaningful again. What I care about is NY and getting this team back on track. First day of the rest of the season starts today…..

  4. Scot says:

Did anyone see the Rangers match? Looks like Edu had an eventful match…

  5. viva nashvegas! says:

Did I miss the MLS game on TV this morning?

  6. chris says:

    Good maybe he can leave

  7. redbullscritic says:

New set is better than the American football rehash of before on fsc

  8. malkin says:

exactly. what a douchey comment. Looking forward to nyrb tonight as well, as i always do, but waking up on a saturday morning to some EPL is certainly nothing to complain about. Has nothing to do with MLS

  9. malkin says:

Does have replay like espn3? ie should i try to ignore the other scores and watch a game from the beginning after fulham v av is over?

  10. Citronomics says:

Go Liverpool – expecting, more hoping new signings make a difference. Go Deuce!

  11. BWH says:

Fancy that, Craven Cottage is just about as small as Jeld-Wen.

  12. Citronomics says:

D’ohhhh. All the effort by Suarez to earn the penalty kick and he 100% flubs it. Has to be a candidate for blown penalty kick of the year 9 months from now.

  13. Jen says:

Hannover’s up 2-0 @ half over Nurnberg. Chandler has a yellow and Dolo’s on the bench.

  14. Matt says:

does anyone know why Dolo hasn’t been playing? Is it just a matter of him being benched for a better player?

  15. Jen says:

I’m assuming it’s because of his injury in the gold cup. He didn’t really participate in Hannover’s preseason and then played a full 90 Wed night. He’s still Hannover’s captain.

  16. Citronomics says:

Apparently, he scored on mop up from a saved penalty to seal the win then got ejected for accumulating 2 yellow cards. NSC has the goal video.

maybe missing the next game won’t matter if Auxerre is serious about a transfer.

  17. Marshmallow says:

    Eminem at the fulham game

  18. Wendell Gee says:

Nothing like attacking people for being “Eurosnobs” for having even the slightest interest in any league outside the US. Why even post if you’re not interested? Shouldn’t you be out beating up immigrants or something?

  19. Wendell Gee says:

    He just played versus Mexico.

  20. Asw says:

    When is Holden projected

  21. Jen says:

I know. That’s why I put in he played a full 90 Wed night. He hasn’t been involved in Hannover’s preseason and then plays a full 90 for the first time in a month. I’m guessing with the lack of practice time with Hannover, the travel to and from Philly, and the full 90 on Wed, he’s not ready to go another 90 for Hannover

  22. Jon says:

    Another month or so, maybe.

  23. skyman says:

    He didn’t sem 100% though

  24. spencer says:

He just started running and doing ball drills. He needs to get fit and everything, so a month or two like jon said

  25. saw says:

Poor kid….great guy, very bad luck! Needed on the USMNT!

  26. ZacIndy says:

Schalke must have been impressed with Jones’ output v. Mexico: Didn’t make the bench.

  27. chris says:

    He’s not that good

  28. Beckster says:

Spector on the bench today with the same uniform # (23) as Dempsey. Maybe it will bring him luck!

  29. NF says:

You ever played a match, flown to another continent and played another match 3 days later?

  30. chris says:

He barley moved in the mexico game

  31. viva nashvegas! says:

    what a goal by sunderland!

  32. NF says:

If that’s what you think, then make that argument. It has nothing to do with why he isn’t playing today.

  33. emt says:

I feel like a traitor, but Villa is better with Given than Guzan,at least this game. N’Zogbia looked nervous. and they need to learn how to shoot. They get themselves in good positions but look scared to take the shot.

  34. canchon says:

+1. You know, you CAN support your local team (RBNY season ticket holder) and still enjoy Sat morning PL. Looking forward to seeing some quality football as an appetizer for RBA tonight.

  35. Jacob says:

    Chandler assisted on Nurnberg goal

  36. canchon says:

Well, he did get outshined by Beckerman on Wed night. *gulp*

  37. Dancy says:

Why would that make you a trader? It is not like you are glad that Guzan is worse than Given. Say has about 100 national team and 400 Premier league starts more than Guzan.

  38. Vic says:

Not surprised by Liverpool result. They had a great run last year. Lets see the changes they made: Dirk Kuyt is a starter for Holland the team that made it to World Cup final. Maxi Rodriguez has over 50 caps for Argentina. Raul Mereiles starts for Portugal. All three didn’t start in favor of new, expensive and young English talent that don’t start for England.

  39. Predicto says:

Edu had a good game with Rangers. Active, played composed with good passing. Involved with most attacks. Scored a goal by following up on saved penalty. Then soon after got a second yellow (first yellow was a weak call).

  40. Predicto says:

Fulham v Aston Villa was an ugly game to watch. Fulham could never get any rhythm or control. Ended up sending long balls over and over. Villa was better throughout, but still not good.

  41. 20 says:

Neither team played well, but you really think Villa was better throughout? Fulham outshot them 15-7 (5-1 on goal) and had more of the possession

  42. 20 says:

Dempsey’s going to have some bruises tomorrow. He drew three yellows from bad tackles

  43. ACS says:

Morales came in as a for Hertha Berlin in their 2-2 draw vs. the Hamburgler

  44. adrian says:

Didn’t watch the game… are you joking or were kuyt maxi and raul really benched?

Had the hottest team in the EPL and you drop your 3 starting midfielders…. fail.

  45. Dancy says:

    Nicely put.

  46. ManicMessiah says:

Newcastle match about to kick off, so excited.

  47. Brett says:

Nah, Fulham had the best four or five chances but the finishing quality was obviously poor. Dempsey looked solid but Etuhu and Hughes really need to be replaced with better players. Duff is also tiresome to watch.

  48. Predicto says:

Chris Rolfe scores nice counter attacking 2nd goal for Aalborg v OB.

  49. GBH says:

the most beautiful league in the world….until the game starts.

  50. A shoe really designed for soccer is advantageous for players because it provides more control and stability to the athlete. That is why it is really important to invest on a footwear that will really be useful in the sports you are in.

  51. Predicto says:

Aalborg at or very near the top spot in the Danish Superliga after this win. I didn’t realize that league is ranked 12 in UEFA – just below turkey/Greece/Nederlands.

  52. kimo says:

Anyone’s TV feed from FSC very choppy? It’s been that way for a month or so now. Not happy!

  53. Eric says:

Was i the only one that totally missed John Arne Riise getting picked up by Fulham? Wasnt aware he left Roma.

  54. kimo says:

How did Whitbred (sp?) look for Norwich?

  55. Predicto says:

Bocanegra not starting or on bench for ASSE today.

  56. Predicto says:

I didn’t watch it, but Skysports has him rated below average at ‘5’ – noted he was caught out a few times. Was subbed with 20 minutes left.

  57. rondo says:

  58. ManicMessiah says:

Song should’ve been sent off for stomping on Barton’s leg, though Barton did bait him, kind of like last year getting Diaby sent off.

  59. Dr.MonkeyArmy says:

Hughes doesn’t need to be replaced…he needs to be put back into central defense.

  60. Dr.MonkeyArmy says:

Joey Barton is a joke…an absolute joke.

  61. ManicMessiah says:

Joey Barton, unbelievavle. Someone is getting sent off, probably.

Gervinho sent off, Barton only gets a yellow. Really need to see this again, he started the whole thing and I’m not sure what exactly went on.
Gervinho should’ve been sent off by letter of law, put his hand to Barton’s face. Don’t agree with it, though. At the very least both should probably go, and Song should’ve been sent off earlier.

  62. ericJ says:

  63. ManicMessiah says:

Lovenkrands for Cabaye, I would’ve taken off Barton just to save him from himself at this point. Decent odds he could get himself sent off.

  64. Travis says:

Both of them should be off, you can’t pick a player up by his jersey then scream in his face. Also he had his arms very high on Gervinho. Gervinho tapped him on the head which is technically red but Barton is a little b***h and everyone knows it. Him and Ge Jong belong in a certain circle of football players

  65. kimo says:

Joey Barton is a disgrace…the Ron Artest of the EPL. Literally, this guy should be booked every game and sent off every other. Refs need to keep an eye on him at all times.

  66. jones says:

I don’t understand how the assistant couldn’t see it – he visibly dragged him up and got up in his face. You can’t get so upset just because you think someone went down too easy. Definitely should’ve been a red for Barton.

  67. Tony in Quakeland says:

Well, since it is the first time Joey ever got into trouble, I can see why he gets a second chance.

  68. kimo says:

    Good one :)

  69. Jacob ATL says:

Thing to remember about Barton… He’s really good.

  70. Tony in Quakeland says:

    You pass today’s sarcasm test!

  71. NF says:

After all the complaining about draws in MLS this year, I was looking forward to the EPL today so we could see some wins. So much for that …

  72. jones says:

meh, the two games I decided to watch today both 0-0…

  73. jones says:

should have watched Bolton I guess 😉

  74. Dancy says:

Barton is much bigger disgrace than Artest.

  75. Joamiq says:

Thanks for that really useful and helpful info.

Also, silverware really designed for food is advantageous for eaters because it provides more control and maneuverability to the eater. That is why it is really important to invest on a silverware that will really be useful in the cuisines you are in.

    Ban this spammer!

  76. Joamiq says:

I’m totally OK with the red for Gervinho and yellow for Barton. Gervinho flopped, Barton was angry and tried to get him up. Aggressively, yes, which is why he got the yellow. But Gervinho’s hands to the face made his red automatic. Grabbing someone’s shirt is never a red. If you could get a yellow for flopping during a scrum maybe Barton would have been sent off too, but that’s not the rule, so as much of a loser he may be for going down there, the result was correct all around.

  77. 20 says:

me too, pretty low quality games too, not exciting 0-0 draws

  78. Joamiq says:

I really wish there was some more commentary from the SBI crew on game days… not just the occasional running commentary posts and recaps, but actual observations and insights on the games…

  79. CplDaniel says:

Yep. Drives me crazy. I always blame my cable company because it gets choppy and sometimes my picture freezes and once I change channels the problem fixes itself and I change back to fox and everything is fine again. F-You Time Warner!!

  80. CplDaniel says:

That game is on right now (1:30pm CT)Whitbread appears to be center-left back.

  81. Wendell Gee says:

What do you think of Joaqim’s post? Should there be more commentary from the SBI crew? Is occasional commentary enough? What about actual observations and insights?

    Share you thoughts below.

  82. MSNats says:

lol. I actually agree, but well played, nonetheless.

  83. CplDaniel says:

I wish the EPL Fantasy website would do real-time game updates like they used to. The switch to EA’s interface really sucks. Slower, less efficient in design, and now they don’t do real-time game updates!?!?! F#@& EA SPORTS!! I hope this is just them being lazy and un-prepared the first weekend. If not, then EA sucks for sucking up a the perfectly fine EPL Fantasy Football interface.

  84. AcidBurn says:

    Barton to MLS!!!

  85. AcidBurn says:

Welcome to the PL, QPR…4-0 to a Holden-less Bolton.

  86. CplDaniel says:

Whitbread has long streaky-blond hair…That’s a big problem as it’s likely to distract Tim Howard!

  87. MLS Commissioner says:

    He’s only 28. Wait 4 more years.

  88. AP says:

  89. Travis says:

Gervinho actually had his foot hit, he embellished but at least from what I saw he was touched. No reason to debate with you though if you think it’s ok to haul another player off the ground by your jersey.

  90. AP says:

Again Agreed! What the hell is a running commentary? I thought the point of the site was to do a running commentary all day of various games and help keep us updated. kind of disappointed. I mean I come to the site to read a more ‘expert’ view not just the average idiotic ramble, if I wanted that I’d be satisfied with watching Alexi Lalas on ESPN

  91. AP says:

YESSSS look at my above post!

  92. Good Jeremy says:

That’s not fair for Artest. He has actually been pretty well behaved since he tried to beat up all of Detroit. That was five years ago.

  93. Jamie Z. says:

The barter system makes me feel like a trader.

  94. Mason says:

Also, silverware keeps your hands clean while eating.

  95. Mason says:

It’s Detroit. They had it coming.

  96. Ted says:

Onyewu didn’t even make the bench for sporting, shessh

  97. Red White & Blue Porker says:

HAHA! Gotta love those generic questions @ the end of a post.

  98. abc says:

He can’t even get a visa to enter the United States. Newcastle were here just a few weeks ago, remember? Barton was denied a visa.

  99. Travis says:

The ref in the seattle vs chivas game just missed a blatantly obvious penalty that would have given the Sounders a win. Kevin Stott strikes again, just a terrible referee

  100. UCanStudyBuzzed says:

WTFFFFF!!!!!! HOOOOORIBLE call in the sounders game how in the world is that not a penalty mr. stot or whatever your frickin name is!?!?!??!!!!! when is USSF going to get their sh!t together with the horrible referees!!!!! He looks like such a little twat running around with no confidence or balls to make a big call!

  101. OmarVizquel says:

“got ejected for accumulating 2 yellow cards.”

    We call that “getting ejeculated.”

  102. Jeff says:

While I too agree, I think the SBI guys need to spend some time just enjoying the games or they will get Blog-writer burn out. They also need to prepare for the very nice, exclusive, MLS coverage they do every weekend.

  103. Dank says:

I think it was a make up for the harsh one called in the first half where the ball hit the defender’s hand.

  104. Dakota Sillyman says:

Any streams for Philli vs Dallas?

  105. whyowhy says:

First Arsenal and now the Redbulls. Will my team’s implosions never cease?

  106. sandtrout says:

Jose Francisco Torres is starting in center-midfield for Pachuca, and if I saw correctly, he had a key role in an early goal. Can’t quite tell if it was him, but I think it was. There was a sort of double wall pass involving him, then Torres passed it to another player down to the goal line, who pulled it back to a forward for a tap-in goal.

  107. sandtrout says:

FWIW, it’s the Uca-Uca rivalry. Pachuca vs. Toluca.

  108. Travis says:

The defenders hand was very far away from his body and the hand balled killed the attack, hardly a harsh call.

  109. 20 says:

Hughes was playing out of position.. like DrMonkeyArmy said he is not a right back. Hughes and Hangeland have been one of the best centerback pairings in the league for a couple years now

  110. marco says:

Mexico vs. Colombia (U-20 World Cup)

Mexico was excellent, 3-1. Has any country ever won the 17’s and 20’s in the same year?
