MLS releases dates of 2012 home openers

MLS has released the dates of each team's home opener for the 2012 season, and all but one team will play its first home match by Week 3.

The Houston Dynamo are the only team that will have to wait a while for their home opener next year, as they'll be on the road until their new soccer-specific stadium opens in Week 10 on May 12. The scenario they face is much like the one Sporting Kansas City did last season, when the club was forced to play its first 10 games on the road.

The Los Angeles Galaxy won't have to wait long to return to the Home Depot Center. The Galaxy begin their MLS Cup title defense at home on the first day of the season on March 10. Five other teams will open the season at home that day as well.

The expansion Montreal Impact have their first-ever MLS home game in Week 2 on March 17. They'll play at the Olympic Stadium to start while renovations to Stade Saputo continue.

Here are all of the dates for 2012 MLS home openers:

Saturday, March 10: Colorado Rapids, D.C. United, LA Galaxy, San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders FC, Vancouver Whitecaps FC

Sunday, March 11: Chivas USA, FC Dallas

Monday, March 12: Portland Timbers

Saturday, March 17: Sporting Kansas City, Montreal Impact, Real Salt Lake

Sunday, March 18: Philadelphia Union

Saturday, March 24: Chicago Fire, Columbus Crew, New England Revolution, Toronto FC

Sunday, March 25: New York Red Bulls

Saturday, May 12: Houston Dynamo

What do you think of these dates? Expecting Houston to struggle until it plays at home? Planning on going to your team's home opener?

  1. Fred says:

What’s with Portland playing on Monday?

  2. Charles says:

First Kick in Seattle !?!? Like the Lions and Cowboys on Thanksgiving.

  3. Brit says:

Seattle has twice the attendance of most teams in the league… What’s your gripe?

  4. Colin says:

Redbulls have really screwed up their season ticket process – raised prices where they shouldn’t have and have in general been poor with season ticket holder communication. I’ve had them for 7 years now. I bought 12 last year and didn’t renew when they went up by 450 dollars each. I didn’t even get a phone call.

Hiring an NBA exec to “restructure” their ticket pricing/offering hasn’t been a good idea so far. I think you’re going to see even less fans in the stands next year.

  5. malkin says:

    TV deal perhaps?

  6. Thomas513 says:

    What offseason?

Let’s go Sounders! 3 games in 8 days to start the season. Right into the fire we go.

  7. Mike says:

when do we know who these teams will be playing for their home opener?

  8. Greg says:

Monday Night Football on NBC? No better way than to open up to a national audience in the Rose City. Look for Red Bulls to be the opponent.

  9. Charles says:

Gripe ? I am going to be there, it is great. IF someone did have a gripe, I could see their point however.

  10. Scott A says:

Yep, the stadium will be emptier next year and it won’t be a sign of bad fans. They’ll be watching at thome. It will be the sign of a (hopefully) successful protest against Chris Heck and the horrendous way in which many aspects of the club are run. Crappy management, not crappy fans.

  11. JJ says:

    Love Saturday games. Go Sounders!

  12. jonk says:

The estimate floating around for the full schedule is mid/late-January. But yeah, you’d think they would release the full matchups for these games now.

  13. Flagermunsen says:

Chicago, Denver and Toronto can have very iffy weather in mid to late March. Here’s hoping for thawed ground, dry weather, and sunshine.

  14. ToddC says:

Wow, that IS awful work by the front office! Your example has to be one of many. That’s the definition of terrible customer service. The MLS should step in, if they haven’t attempted to already. It’s a shame to have that great stadium and nobody there. It just makes the league as a whole look even worse on a global level. Get your ish together Red Bull!

  15. ciscokid says:

Notice all weekend games are in the Western Conference except DC? Opening game visiting supporters have a long way to travel

  16. Kejsare says:

MLS cites the schedule will be out before end of the year.

  17. Marcos says:

Great way to open the season as the only game of the night

  18. Richie Rich says:

In case you havent noticed, weather is iffy all the time now. Thank you Tea-baggers!
