Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Jozy Altidore 1 (Reuters)

Days after his head coach cited a lack of progress as a reason for his benching, Jozy Altidore responded in a big way.

In his first start for AZ Alkmaar in 2012, Altidore bagged a brace in the club's 3-3 draw with Heerenveen. Altidore scored the game's opener when he received the ball with his back to goal, turned and fired a shot to the near post. He added his 13th of the season across all competitions in the second half by receiving a pass and slotting home a shot from 13 yards out. Altidore nearly completed a hat-trick, but a shot on a breakaway skimmed just wide.

Herculez Gomez also found the back of the net, opening his scoring account with Santos Laguna with a sublime header. The goal cut Santos' deficit against Chivas de Guadalajara to 2-1, and Gomez could have been the hero had he not missed a potential tying penalty kick in the waning moments of the match.

A third player got on his team's scoresheet this weekend as well. U.S. Under-23 men's national team midfielder Joe Corona scored his first goal of the Clausura campaign for Club Tijuana in their 1-1 draw with Toluca. Corona started and played 57 minutes in the game.

  1. I JIK I RED BULLZ says:

Jurgen Klinsmann needs to redo the 22 man roster. I understand that Zak Whitbread just came back from injury but seriously he went the distance againt Manchester United he deserves to get called up and he can be the replacement for Onyewu.

I don’t understand why JK called up Parkhurst nothing against him but he doesn’t belong in the A team a player like Tim Ream should be in there instead.

Now that Chandler is out with an injury a player like Castillo should take his place playing day in and day out for Xolos and although Lichaj isn’t getting any playing time he should be added to the National Team to at very least train with them.

Jermaine Jones and Jose Torres are out with injuries so adding Sacha Kljestan and DaMarcus Beasley should be added in the roster.

I don’t know if this Donovan rumor is true that he will miss the Italy game due to sickness but if that’s the case the USMNT shouldn’t call Shea he needs to stay in the U23. What JK should do is call up Herculez Gomez he deserves a call up and is a super bench player that we can use late in the game.

Add: Whitbread, Ream, Castillo, Lichaj, Kljestan, Beasley, Gomez

    Drop: Onyewu(injury), Chandler(injury), Parkhurst, Torres(injury), Jones(injury)

  2. Amru says:

Gomez does not need to be anywhere near this game

  3. Livapool says:

I would like to see Whitbread and Kljestan added to the team. I doubt Klinsmann would add both Lichaj and Castillo since there is a possibility that Johnson will play Left Back. I also agree about Parkhurst in the team I like the guy but if you have Center Backs playing in the EPL then why not all them up? I wouldn’t mind Beasley we might actually need him due to all these injuries. I always like Gomez but Jurgen seems not to be impress and will not add him to the team but Gomez did have a sick header goal did you guys see that ball curve!

  4. MicahK says:

Donovan, Chandler, and Torres are out for the Italy friendly.

  5. hogatroge says:

    …and Gooch, and Jermaine Jones.

  6. MicahK says:

Ream sucks. Wait until he gets really tested in the EPL he will be relegated to the bench.

(SBI-Right, wait until he faces a “real” team, you know, like Chelsea, with forwards like Drogba and Sturridge.

Micah, your hatred of American players is laughable. Say you don’t rate a guy, but you always seem to take it way too far with your overboard “Player A sucks” rants. It’s not as if that stuff is uncommon, it’s pretty standard bottom level stuff, but it doesn’t exactly bring a lot to the conversation here.)

  7. Pro says:

Hey Ives in it says that Zak Whitbread assisted the goal of Grant Holt against MU!

  8. Dimidri says:

While Jozy questionably should have passed for what could have been the 3rd gaol(the far post guy looked possibly offside), the goalkeeper was absolutely at fault for the third goal and, despite the poor clearance, not strong enough on the second one.

  9. hogatroge says:

Why in the world do you think Klinsmann would drop a healthy Parkhurst with all the injuries that are piling up?!

  10. MicahK says:

How is Jones injured in training ?

  11. V says:

I didn’t want Klinsmann to call Shea because I wanted Shea to stay with the U23 and beat Mexico we’re probably not going to beat Italy now that Donovan is out plus we’re most likely going to lose to Mexico now that we lost Boyd and Shea to the USMNT

  12. Manchester U says:

I think he’s trying to say that Ream and Whitbread would replace Parkhurst having Ream, Whitbread, Bocanegra, and Cameron would make 4 CBs it make sense what he’s trying to say you’re not getting it.

  13. Luke says:

And this is why you aren’t the coach.

  14. vik says:

It happens; heck, Gonzalez is out 6 months from an injury sustained in training.

  15. marco says:

If the rest of AZ progressed as much as Jozy they be top of the table.

  16. MicahK says:

That is my point he sucked and allowed 3 goals in. That is my point, sorry you cannot see it. It is not hatred. I do want Ream to get better, but he is just to overrated. You all overrating him is not helping. Look at Bedoya he does not even dress for Rangers. Ream is starting I bet, because of injuries. We will see Ives when he plays the likes of other good EPL teams like Man U,New Castle,Liverpool, etc. We will see if you still think that Tim Ream is good.

(SBI-Allowed all three goals? Now you’re just showing how clueless you are. He didn’t “allow” all three goals. He played no part in the first two goals, and the third goal came due to him and the Bolton D not picking up Lampard, which he can take some blame for, but not all.

And am I saying Ream is going to be a top Premier League defender? No, but your view, and your comments about the Chelsea match, show pretty clearly that you’re opinions of him are distorted and not based in reality.)

  17. MicahK says:

Can you look at my posting history ? The only two players I bash are Ream and Bedoya that is it. Posters like chris bash every player in the US roster player pool.

  18. Ryan says:

so where are the Jozy haters? If he bags one more goal he has ten for the season. He is in fine form.

  19. AdamFromMich says:

I just watched the AZ – Heerenveen highlights, and I have a few things to say: First, those were some nice goals by Jozy; Second, I’m not impressed with the goalkeeping in the Dutch league; And finally, what is up with the Heerenveen uniforms? Do they actually have hearts on them?

  20. drew11 says:

Call up Whitbread and if he cries injury again remove him from the pool. Enough already.

  21. CroCajun says:

If a brace from Jozy could silence the haters, they would have shut up the first few times he got them. I don’t see it happening.

  22. Heri says:

The Latin Obama blew the game-tying PK today, but he is still a better scorer than most of the the US forwards

  23. ericJ says:

Hearts since Bradley played for them…and before I assume.

  24. Judging Amy says:

But…but…he doesn’t score every single game!! He has goal slumps!! He’s not world class!!! He’s lazeeeee :(

  25. Judging Amy says:

Esteban was very poor on both those goals (he gets a pass on the first one cuz the Heerenven player obstructed his vision). Especially the second one where he inexplicably tried to catch that ball instead of punching. Loss is largely on him.

  26. MicahK says:

The defenses job is to stop goals, right ? He should have communicated with his back line to not prevent any goals for the team. Your reviews of him are unrealistic just like Bedoya, over rated. He could not even keep up in the Gold cup against weak Concacaf teams with no world cup history.

(SBI-Ah, Bedoya, another player you have an unhealthy hate toward. Seriously, you are American right? What’s with the random hate for certain American players? For your info, Bedoya was very good at the Gold Cup, something normal non-haters could acknowledge.

Did Ream struggle at the Gold Cup? Sure, he had a tough time against Panama, but he’s better than he showed and there’s a reason Bolton paid millions for him (just like there’s a reason Rangers bought Bedoya).)

  27. Michael F says:

Jozy showed well. Very well. Im happy for him and hope he ends with 20 or more goals accross all competitions. Ream played a great game against CHELSEA. Yes that last goal was due to lack of communication but it was not solely on him. I have no idea where MicahK is coming from. It’s one thing to have a different opinion but quite another to be so far off base.

  28. nick says:

Wow, Jozy’s teammates don’t seem to like him very much.. they only seem to pass to him when it is the last option. i was impressed with his passing tho.

AZ keeper absolutely at fault for the last 2 goals. First one should have been offside.. as a goalie, i hate it when goals like that are allowed.

  29. b says:

I thought the same thing, he played well and there were still many instances where he was the best option and his teammates didn’t get him the ball.

  30. Evan says:

It’s too bad Esteban couldn’t represent Concacaf a little better than that….

  31. RK says:

Those might be the highest-quality goals I have seen from him. Great patience.

  32. RK says:

    Colours, crest, and anthem

The crest on the club emblem is the symbol of the flag of Friesland. The flag of Friesland is based on the arms of the 15th century. The stripes and waterlily leaves represent the districts of Friesland.

  33. RK says:

Cool, you can Google Street Heerenveen’s stadium.

  34. away goal says:

Spot on. The fact is bolton’s defense were the best unit in world football prior to that chelsea game. The addition of ream destroyed the back line cohesion the wanderers are so famous for.

Anybody with half a soccer brain knows that bolton were expected to not only win at stamford bridge, but to keep a clean sheet as well.

Send this ream character packing, mr coyle, and get get back to the business of winning the league!

  35. Biebs says:

Jozy did get moved from the starting lineup to the bench for the first 6 weeks of 2012.

    I don’t think it’s being a “hater” to say that’s not a good thing.

  36. Richard says:

Always liked their jerseys… hearts and all

  37. GSScasual says:

you must the LEAST informed poster on here.. and i have seem some stupid posts, but you MicahK take the cake… do you even watch football?

  38. john.q says:

Tim Ream hate freedom. He hates America.

  39. RLW2020 says:

Jozy looked great in the replay. Scored 2 quality goals and was part of 5 other opportunities that he looked dangerous in.

Both AZ or Hargreeven should invest in some defenders/GKs!

Love the “born in the USA” after Jozy scores!

  40. Joamiq says:

Whoa, that first Heerenveen goal was suuuper offside. Totally absurd.

  41. Kosh says:

    Marvellous! Simply awesome post!!

Here’s hoping this starts a steep upward trend on the quality of posts on here this week…I mean I did say “here’s hoping”.

  42. GW says:

The benching was a good thing.

The manager had an issue with how Jozy was playing (or training) and made his point, which is “you get with the program or you sit”. This is coaching 101.

AZ bought Jozy knowing he was project and this is all part of the deal. Everyone is way overeacting to his goals and his benchings. AZ have stated that Jozy can be a more complete player and do more than just scores goals.

Eventually, AZ will stop benching Jozy when he finally gets with the program and starts playing, training and producing like the high level player they believe he can become.

What is your problem with that?

  43. hogatroge says:

This post reeks of a spontaneously created alias used to bump the OP’s comment.

Regardless, it absolutely does NOT make sense to drop a player who has already been called up and is healthy in order to bring a different defender.

Questioning a player’s inclusion is fine. Calling for a healthy player to be dropped from the roster is inane.

  44. CroCajun says:

I think the “hating” he is referring to is the “lazy out-the-door” comments. The “he’s done” and he should never get a start. Calls you hear every time he misses a game. I believe on the thread that announced Jozy’s benching, a SBI users said that Jozy would be back in the MLS in a year and he was a failure in Europe.

Your criticisms are valid, but there are people who criticize Jozy, and for that matter many other USMNT players, without making valid points. This is hating.

  45. Jaaaay says:

The Italians will do circles around Parkhurst

  46. I JIK I RED BULLZ says:

And your point being? It’s just an opinion of who I believe should get called up I hope your’re not the one who gets excited to see MLS players getting called up and do absolutely nothing to this team

  47. ImJustSaying says:

I would rather have Herculez playing than 3/4 of the Forwards in the US pool.

  48. Stans The Man says:

    What are you talking about?

  49. I JIK I RED BULLZ says:

I hope it’s only 6 months some sources say he can be out for a full year!

  50. Roger That says:

    Calling up Parkhurst is INSANE!

  51. MicahK says:

Because they are over rated players.Wow, that is very hilarious you think just cause I do not like two US Players I am not American? So does this mean that Preston Zimmerman is not American neither ? Since he hates all the American players with duel US and German citizenship. Ives you choose like the weirdest players in the US pool to overrate. The only two players I bash are Ream and Bedoya. Their on people on here who bash every player in the US player pool. Bedoya barely played in the Gold cup he gave Dempsey passes, THAT STILL DID NOT LEAD TO ANY GOALS. Yeah, sounds like he had a great Gold Cup to me :D. Bedoya does not even dress for Rangers.

  52. MicahK says:

Sarcasm fail times infinity !!! Anyone with a brain would know that sarcasm is not your forte. You just need to stick to reading comments and jumping on the bandwagon like everyone else.

  53. MicahK says:

Do you watch it is the question. How are my post stupid ? You all wanna bash Jozy and other players. But, when it comes to players like Bedoya and Ream you all act like they are on the same level as Ronaldo and Puyol. It is very laughable and you all are the ones that are misinformed not me. So please when Ream gets relegated to the bench, I will be back on here laughing at you all. I wish him all the best, but you all over rating him is not helping him. Rate him as the player he is and not rate him like he is John Terry or Puyol. -_____-

  54. MicahK says:

When he is healthy he still does not dress for them.
