Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

More than bragging rights in North London will be on the line at the Emirates today when Arsenal takes on Tottenham. For the Gunners, holding on to their precious top four place in the English Premier League standings will be at stake, while  Tottenham will be trying to solidify their hold on third place.

Chelsea's romp over Arsenal has pushed the Gunners to fifth place, and Arsene Wenger's side can't afford to drop many more points if they are going to be back in the Champions League next season. For Tottenham, a win at the Emirates would mean a ten-point cushion in third place and a chance to strike a brutal blow for their arch-rivals.

In Italy, red-hot Napoli takes on struggling Inter Milan in what should be one of the day's more entertaining clashes, while Spain will offer up the Atletico Madrid-Barcelona battle as Barca tries to keep hope alive of a miraculous comeback on first-place Real Madrid.

  1. Captain Obvious says:

If passing was the only prerequisite to being a good defender, Tim Ream would be world class.

I hope he develops at Bolton but Ream has zero lateral quickness and absolutely no second gear for speed.

    Geoff Cameron > Tim Ream

  2. ernj says:

Not disagreeing but Ream is not slow. Did you see him race back to clear Donovan’s goal off the line in the regular season?

  3. Captain Obvious says:

Go back and watch: he already had a running start.

Start/Stop (i.e. second gear) speed, he has zero.

  4. Pete says:

He’s also prone to one major mistake a game. Even when he seems to be having a solid game, there’s a key error looming around the corner. I just don’t trust him yet. Having said that, having him picking up experience in the EPL will go a long way in eliminating these – I hope.

  5. Captain Obvious says:

    I hope so too.

  6. Jon says:

  7. Matt says:

Zak is playing and has had a couple of positive mentions, although it will be an uphill climb against ManU

  8. Joe_H says:

Van Persie is amazing….Arsenal showing some heart coming back form 2-0

  9. marco says:

Two chaps here claimed Whitbread was injured and so was not selected by Klinsmann.

Don’t like Saha starting for Spurs.

  10. Matt says:

I think this is his first game back; I imagine his club didn’t want him to tisk injury for a friendly given his injury-prone past, but who knows.. maybe he will get a call up; he deserves a look if healthy.

  11. caz2070 says:

It appears that Michael Bradley is not on the field for Chievo today? Anything significant?

  12. kev says:

too many yellow card accumulation. he’ll be starting with them next weekend. Not playing today leaves him injury free for WED.

  13. Matt says:

Yes, hopefully Chievo can pick up the win at home today against bottom dweller Cesena, solidifying their spot securely midtable, which isn’t bad for a small market team like Chievo.

  14. malkin says:

Wasn’t anything too dramatic, but Whitbread just cleared a ball off the goal line that had beaten the keeper and was 1-2 feet from being 2-0

  15. Jon says:

    Holy crap @ Arsenal.

Jozy back in the XI, as expected given the Benschop injury.

Go bag a couple Jozy, don’t let anybody take it back.

  16. malkin says:

    and it’s 1-1…assisted by Whitbread!

  17. malkin says:

sucks espn3 isn’t showing AZ…oh well, first row choppy advertisements it is.

  18. marco says:

They hardly ever score, only Cesena scores less.

  19. deepvalue says:

4 – Here we go Spurs!

34 – Ah yes, this is going to be an easy one.

    40 – Wait, what?

    43 – Oh geez, let’s regroup.

51 – What the hellz is this?

    65 – I don’t like soccer anymore. I hate it.

68 – Is there any beer left, at all?

  20. cajun says:

I didn’t see Whitbread play, but contrary to reports, he seems well enough to play at the highest of club level. With the the Nat team being in somewhat of disarray with injuries. Maybe he deserves a look-see from Klinsi?

  21. g? says:

Jozy kept the ball on a 2 v 2, could’ve set up a nice assist there. BLAH

  22. malkin says:

Seemed like he was lookin for some guadaloupesque magic then changed his mind. Great job fighting off the defender and then distributing to the other striker about 5 minutes earlier that could have also resulted in something.

  23. malkin says:

    shoulda been a pk there

  24. g? says:

Yeah. Though AZ (and Heerenveen to a lesser extent) have had a large number of long ground passes to no one/the other team.

  25. g? says:

  26. Ben says:

    Sick finish by Jozy!

  27. caz2070 says:

    Jozy! Nice goal.

  28. g? says:

Fired a low shot past his defender near post. More placement than power.

Also did the thumb-sucking thing after he scored–has he been scoring in more ways than one?

  29. g? says:

Still more mids beating 3 defenders, making good runs, final passes to no one.

  30. iheartscotch says:

Looks like chandler is out of the Italy friendly due to a minor injury… Our troops keep falling. This sucks.

  31. g? says:

Jozy nearrrrrrly with an assist on a good run

  32. J-sizzle!! says:

  33. marco says:

Jozy has actually been the best passer in attack the past two games. Holman and Beerens never get him the ball. Besides scoring, Jozy has set up two good scoring opportunities.

Nobody on Spurs played well. They were second to every ball.

  34. Citronomics says:

And Cardiff strikes against the run of play. Lots of possession for Liverpool but not able to create meaningful chances.

  35. MiamiAl says:

Ribery was very good today! Scord 2 goals against Schalke to pull Bayern withina point of first place in Bundesliga.

    Mia Sans Mia!!!!

  36. john.q says:

Tim Ream eats puppies and steps on kittens for fun.

  37. g? says:

Right after Heerenveen equalize, Jozy waits at the top of the box, settles, and fires a low shot home!
9th league goal! AZs joint top scorer.

  38. Matt says:

Two goals for Jozy so far; first one was about good use of his body and strength to give himself position to turn a well placed shot; second goal he was wide open in teh center in a crowded box on a pass coming on the ground from the side; he took it set up and scored well; commentators here in Spain mentioned he showed good awareness.

  39. Matt says:

Sorry I am watching it on TV.

  40. Captain Obvious says:

albeit slowly and often out of position when he does so, yes.

  41. kev says:

Oh baby Jozy is back. Thank you Jesus.

Let’s hope he bags a goal against Italy come Wednesday

  42. ARGH says:

Hat trick for Jozy. Come on Jozy. 25mins left

  43. cajun says:

Jeez! I lost my feed when it was 2 nil Spurs! They must’ve..uh..uh choked? What happened to Brad Friedel, or was it a total defensive collapse??

  44. Polo says:

Apparently they don’t play defense in the Dutch first division. There are only 6 teams with a positive goal differential.

  45. ARGH says:

true that. their top scorer has maybe 4 goals this season. OUCH

  46. Dank says:

Wow, AZ’s goalie just imploding out there

  47. ARGH says:

great point. most of their top scorers for the last few seasons have finished with like 25-30 goals. Suarez finished with like 35 a few seasons ago.

Dutch league is ranked 8th by UEFA right?

  48. Dank says:

…and AZ get one right back. 3-3 now.

  49. Dank says:

Jozy with a nice turn down the sideline and dangerous cross. Goalie just beat the offensive player to the ball.

  50. Polo says:

Somewhere around there. I was checking the table to see where AZ and Heer were at the moment when I noticed that only the top 6 at the table have a positive GD and they are a way above 0.

  51. marco says:

The entire team collapsed, nothing on Friedel.

  52. Since 82 says:

Altidore is progressing well. It will be interesting to see Wednesday’s match with Donovan and Dempsey playing together for the first time under Coach Klinsmann.

  53. marco says:

Yes, he lost them the win. Nearly made another gaffe when he let a 20′ straight up high ball bounce 5 feet away from him.

  54. Citronomics says:

Skrtel with a finish after Suarez’s header clangs of the post. Red Dragons back in it. Should be an intense 25+.

  55. marco says:

Jozy has been the best passer in the attacking zone the past two games.

  56. Since 82 says:

Yes and I think that is a promising sign. Altidore is doing more things well than not. He is a good fit at F in our new system.

Granted, it would help if a couple more F develop in advance between now and WC2014. My money is on Sapong.

  57. ARGH says:

A frontal attack of Donovan, Altidore and Dempsey

    ah makes me DREAM

  58. nrjrjrre says:

9 league goals in 23 league matches ain’t bad. Considering he’s been on the bench the last few matches. In fact a few weeks back he scored a brace off the bench. Overall he’s at 13 goals in 36 matches for the season.

  59. nrjrjrre says:

well always a chance Davies becomes a real attacking threat.

Agudelo, Bunbury, Sapong (as you noted), the kid Boyd and perhaps a few more. I think we’re developing. If in 1 year the only true striker we have still is just JOZY, than freak out time

  60. iheartscotch says:

    My money is on Boyd

  61. g? says:

And all of this for a team in contention for the title, which (despite what the secret footballer said for the Guardian yesterday) would hopefully be good for his confidence.

  62. Andy says:

    You called it.

  63. marco says:

AZ coach needs to look into why Beerens and Holman can never find him (continuing problem). Goalie gave the win away today.

  64. Judging Amy says:

Jozy Altidore is slow, lucky, never ever scores, has a terrible first touch, the Dutch league is worse than MLS, he’s old, he’s too big, nepotism, global warming,Freddy Adu 2.0, EJ 2.0, Emerson Hyndman is already better and should start in his place…let’s see what else, oh yeah he is lazy and unmotivated.

  65. malkin says:

I wonder if this means we’ll see Johnson at left back

  66. 23 says:

    Ja Ja Ja.

AZ could win the title this year, even if they do not, they have EL football which is damn good for them,

  67. Phlub says:

Not much difference than in any other league. Look at the EPL table.

  68. Lampard in the End Zone says:

Be careful, people here might not get your sarcasm.

  69. Since 82 says:

I have not seen him much. In general, I am enjoying the progress of our players and such. Believe me, there have been far worse times and less talent.

  70. Since 82 says:

That;s the ticket. I believe Shea will continue to develop too and Adu’s role needs to be integrated into this squad. He has an important function I believe. Case in point, Gold Cup Final versus Mexico. There are a lot of things (Adu) he isn’t, but there are things he does well that no one else in the pool does.

  71. Matt says:

Wow Liverpool scores in extra time and Cardiff hits back in the dying minutes. Come on you Bluebirds

  72. Alex G says:

Why was WHITBREAD left out for the US ITALY game??, It doesn´t make any sense.

  73. Jeff says:

    What a finish.

  74. Bryan says:

The keeper could have done a little better but good for Jozy

  75. Edwin in LA says:

He was injured up until last weekend having missed 2 games in a row I believe. Could be that Norwich City didn’t want to release him and asked him to skip the call up IF Klinsmann did call him up, but considering that over 3 days before the period of 2 weeks when usually clubs receive the calls from National team coaches Whitbread was considered injured.

Guy has just had bad timing, got hurt right before the March Friendlies if I’m not mistaken and also before the Gold Cup I think and had a bit of a nagging injury in the beginning of the season also right when call ups where about to happen, nothing usually all that serious just a week or two, but when the US usually has had call ups

  76. Tony in Quakeland says:

    Jozy…12 to go

  77. malkin says:

ya he should probably stick with ninja-kicking opposing fans

  78. Michael Stypulkoski says:

If it wasn’t for the benching I think your prediction would have come true. Hopefully his performance today forces him back into the starting eleven.

  79. CroCajun says:

Yes, lets criticize the defender starting in the EPL against Chelsea. He’s garbage. Is there a German reserve team defender we can pin our hopes on instead?

(He had his first game in the EPL yesterday. He is a puppy in defender years. Give him a chance).

  80. CroCajun says:

Do you think he’ll ever get called up to play for the Arsenal “A” team in Spain?

  81. Eric says:

That may be true but Adu has to prove he can start consistently at the club level first. Yes he has shown flashes at the international level, but he doesn’t deserve to be in the conversation as a national team contributor until he nails down consistent playing time with a good club team. Hopefully, he stays healthy for Philly this year and does that just that.

  82. Tony in Quakeland says:

However it winds up, I’m having fun with it and he’s having a big step forward this year. In any case, I think he’s exceed everyone else’s predictions, which topped out around 12.

By the way, No Short Corner’s blog is really good on Dutch football. His take is that the coach is playing mind games with Jozy and that the need to start him has been a major talking point on the talk shows and in the papers.

  83. Jon says:

Italy’s squad for Wednesday is out.

    No Balotelli!

Italy squad: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Morgan De Sanctis (Napoli), Salvatore Sirigu (Paris St Germain), Emiliano Viviano (Palermo; Ignazio Abate (AC Milan), Davide Astori (Cagliari), Federico Balzaretti (Palermo), Andrea Barzagli (Juventus), Leonardo Bonucci (Juventus), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Domenico Criscito (Zenit St Petersburg), Christian Maggio (Napoli), Angelo Ogbonna (Torino); Daniele De Rossi (Roma), Claudio Marchisio (Juventus), Riccardo Montolivo (Fiorentina), Thiago Motta (Inter Milan), Antonio Nocerino (AC Milan), Andrea Pirlo (Juventus); Fabio Borini (Roma), Sebastian Giovinco (Parma), Alessandro Matri (Juventus) Giampaolo Pazzini (Inter Milan).

  84. CplDaniel says:

  85. TomG says:

+1. All his managers have consistently said that Tim is one of the fastest guys on the team. Ream has his issues, but speed isn’t one of them. If you persist with this argument, we’ll have to change your name to captain clueless.

  86. away goals says:

I don’t think looking collectively at a league’s goal difference can tell you what kind of defense is being played on account of it always being 0.

  87. TomG says:

Thanks for the link. Decent shot, but GREAT turn move by Jozy. It wasn’t as spectacular as his Confed Cup post up on Capdevilla, but very nice indeed. That’s kind of his go to move.

  88. Judging Amy says:

Agreed. Give the young dude a chance. I’m not even a big Tim Ream guy and I’ve been critical of his play but still.

You’d think none of our defenders had flaws the flak he gets.

  89. Judging Amy says:

    ahh logic.

  90. GW says:

The Dutch league is a free scoring one but so what?

The coaching is top flight and they produce a great number of top flight players of all types, strikers, midfielders and defenders.

Yong Amerrican players, if they can find a good situation, as it seems Jozy has, could do lot worse than spend a few years there.

  91. UffyEdo says:

Herculez Gomez scored his first goal for Santos tonight. Too bad it still ended up being a loss against Chivas.
