Soccer Tuesday: Your Running Commentary

The first two places in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals will be booked on Tuesday, with AC Milan looking to finish off Arsenal after an emphatic 4-0 victory in their opening leg at the San Siro.

While a miracle comeback is something to keep an eye out for, there figures to be more drama in the day's less-heralded UCL matchup, where Zenit-St. Petersburg nurses a 3-2 edge over a Benfica side that has the away goal tiebreaker in its favor leading into the second leg at Estadio da Luz.

Elsewhere in Europe, Birmingham City and Chelsea tangle in an FA Cup replay in the Premier League side's first match since Andre Villas-Boas was ousted as manager. Jonathan Spector & Co. will look to add yet another layer to Chelsea's futile season by posting a home victory and advancing to a quarterfinal matchup with Leicester City. Also of note in that match is that U.S. Under-20 defender Will Packwood is on the bench for Birmingham for the first time in his career.

Here is the viewing schedule for the day's matches:

2:45 p.m. – Fox Soccer Channel – Arsenal vs. AC Milan

2:45 p.m. – Fox Soccer Plus/Fox – Birmingham vs. Chelsea

2:45 p.m. – – Benfica vs. Zenit St. Petersburg

If you will be watching any of Tuesday's matches, please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below. Enjoy the action.

  1. Air Jordanz says:

There’s a William Packwood with US citizenship on the bench for Birmingham City.

    CAP HIM!!1

On a serious note… does anyone know anything else about this 18 yo?

  2. Mig22 says:

Wow, this ref is card happy. Anything could happen in this game.

  3. chris says:

yeah hes played for US youth teams for years and is expected to be apart of the U-20’s this cycle

  4. Mig22 says:

Here comes Arsenal. I’m not a Gunners fan but I would just love to see Milan vomit all over themselves. And I don’t know why I don’t Milan…maybe it’s Ibra….but I don’t.

  5. Mig22 says:

Agh, my Fox Soccer broadcast has the audio feed a second ahead of the picture. There is nothing more distracting. If it was behind, I wouldn’t care.

  6. jon says:

ya i noticed that too…how is that possible?

  7. RK says:

    Time machine.

  8. CroCajun says:

    I can’t believe what I’m seeing…

  9. Mig22 says:

gettin weird. What’s going to be interesting is how Arsenal will approach this now. Do they get conservative and ‘defend’ as the color commentator has been suggesting?

  10. Steve C says:

So much for that insurmountable lead Milan had. Geez.

  11. CroCajun says:

In case you aren’t watching Arsenal is doing that thing they do where they look like a high paid championship side at the beginning of the season and world beaters at the end.

  12. Mig22 says:

And it’s getting weirder. Scestny made a beauty of a charge at the shooter. Ives blames the shank on Al Sharaway but I think we need to at least give a nod to the keeper there.

  13. Polo says:

Musbah, the Milan left back, is absolutely terrible. Just… absolutely terrible.

  14. FulhamPete says:

He has one of the best porn names EVER?

  15. CroCajun says:

You’ve got the hottest player in the world over 5’7 on your squad. Don’t let Milan find a rhythm. Keep the pressure on.

  16. Polo says:

It was just a horrible play from the shooter. What was he even thinking with that shot? It wasn’t close.

  17. K Bone says:

I believe they usually do the opposite. They ended up playing terribly last season. What are you talking about?

  18. rory says:

    Sound travels faster than shite.

  19. TomG says:

groan. I can’t believe I’m stuck at work.

  20. Michael Stypulkoski says:

As a neutral, I’m pretty glad I decided to tune into this Arsenal game.

  21. away goals says:

Thanks for explaining the joke, joke explainer!

  22. malkin says:

Too bad his first name isn’t Richard

  23. Joe Creighton says:

Can’t stand Arsenal as I’m a Spurs, hope they choke in the 2nd half.

  24. CroCajun says:

I’m talking about the team that made it to the semi finals of the Champions League last year…

  25. SteveE says:

I can’t believe I am not recording this. I may have to try and watch it online tomorrow.

  26. marco says:

Wenger has won the first half decisively. Milan are rattled. I haven’t watched Robinho in a while but was surprised that Arsenal defenders could catch him from behind. Milan needs a new left side or they’re going down.

  27. Mig22 says:

yeah, as a (sad, beaten) Chelsea fan, I am close to a neutral. So I agree.

  28. ac says:

Arsenal, are you teasing us again?

  29. away goals says:

Now i’m lost. I thought you were cleverly lampooning arsenal’s tendency to fade as the season wears on.

Because they were not still playing in the semifinals of last year’s champions league. Bowed out in the round of 16 to barca, I believe.

  30. Polo says:

Mesbah is so, so, so bad. Where did they find this guy and why is he playing? He wouldn’t start for some MLS squads.

  31. CroCajun says:

Let’s just all walk away and pretend like none of this ever happened…

  32. Mig22 says:

This is now, officially, one of those games that will be talked about for a while.

RVP has that opportunity, and the keeper stones him? What keeper has stoned HIM in the last year.

    What a game.

  33. johnnycougar says:

    I mean, seriously.

  34. CroCajun says:

Wow. Arsenal defense is just teasing fate now.

  35. g? says:

Gervinho should’ve been better on that though.

  36. Polo says:

This is why Barcelona got rid of Ibrahimovich. Selfish and constantly lazy (offside).

  37. Mig22 says:

dude, who do you actually LIKE? 😉

  38. MemRook says:

Anyone else see what looked to be vomit on the Arsenal crest when they show Wenger sitting on the sidelines?

  39. Mig22 says:

This just in, Chelsea have now scored two goals against Championship powerhouse, Birmingham City. It looks like they will advance. This Blues supporter gives a weary, woohoo.

Edit: Chelsea Blues that is…not Birmingham. :)

  40. CroCajun says:

What is the screwiest way this can end? I’m predicting arsenal goes up 5-0 and Milan puts one in during stoppage time to win on aggregate.

  41. CroCajun says:

The internet is no place for liking.

  42. Polo says:

Right now on Milan? Only person even trying seems to be Van Bommel. 😀

  43. Polo says:

8 offside calls for Ibrahimovich. 8.

  44. Mig22 says:

And the Milan goal comes on a Robinho dive?

  45. Zach says:

Ibrahimovich is just terrible right now.

  46. Mig22 says:

Do the Milan players have money on Arsenal? How did Noccherino (sp?) miss?

  47. CroCajun says:

    Sounds about right.

  48. Polo says:

Milan deserves to lose after that. I could have flopped face first into the pitch and still scored that with my body. YOU’RE 3 FEET IN FRONT OF THE NET.

  49. Polo says:

Oh my god the official just screwed that up so badly. A goal kick?

Lol wow who does he have money on?

  50. Zach says:

Woah, what is this referee watching? Inexplicable call.

  51. CristianoGeraldoFaldoRonaldo says:

Strange. Not how poor Milan have looked on the attack (& overall at times), but rather how disinterested they have appeared as a squad throughout most of the match. Coming up on injury time & only now do they seem up for putting in 3 minutes of work. Strange and suspect plan by Allegri. Good job though.

  52. Mig22 says:

    Hell of a show, though.

  53. marco says:

British commentator on Sky said at halftime, Arsenal needs to pullback and defend more, the chances will come. I think he had it wrong. Milan was nervous and ready to give up more. Even the 8 footer by Milan’s Nocerino was put right to the goalie. Great effort by Arsenal.

  54. Joe Creighton says:

    Glorious failure Arsenal!

    C’mon you Spurs,,,,
