  1. malkin says:

    what happened to whitbread?

  2. malkin says:

“Paul Lambert confirmed after Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Everton central defender Zak Whitbread had been omitted with a calf problem.

Lambert will assess both Whitbread and midfielder Anthony Pilkington’s fitness before making a final decision on his starting line-up at White Hart Lane.”

  3. Modibo says:

Anyone know if the Fulham-Chelsea match will be available tonight on replay on ESPN360?

  4. AC says:

Glad to see Lichaj back to form with Aston Villa. He was almost a forgotten man during his injury layoff. The great part is he can play either right or left back. Hope he gets his national team call up. Nothing wrong with good competition.

  5. g? says:

Wouldn’t be surprised to see him subbed off since it sounds like Hutton is getting healthy.
And because they had a game two days ago.

  6. alka246 says:

Don’t forget about Hammarby opening up their season today with Greg Berglater at the helm.

  7. Dainja says:

Ben Arfa just skated through Bolton’s defense for a goal, but I think it was mainly on Wheater (the other CB, not Ream) who did a weak attempt at a step for the ball instead of doing better to stop Arfa. Ream’s playing ok so far.

  8. fischy says:

Amazing run by Ben-Arfa, but I wonder if Ream shouldn’t have or could have moved over sooner to block it? Not his mistake to begin with, to be sure, but could he have done better to leave his man sooner rather than let Ben Arfa run straight up the middle?

  9. elgringorico says:

It appears to be Live Only, hence the “Live Only.”

  10. Modibo says:

Thanks elgringorico I happen to be at work and can’t go to the site. Your detailed reporting is certainly appreciated.

  11. Dos says:

Ream getting torn apart out there, Amiobi just beasted him

  12. Dainja says:

And right after I write that, Ream gets tossed around like a rag doll to the ground by Amiobi, and he keeps on going to make an assist for a relatively easy goal. Lookin a lil weak there Tim! (and i’m an RBNY fan, so no hatin there)

  13. Mat says:

Ream is showing why he’s still far from being a regular option for the USMNT. Well, at least he’s learning the hard way, but he still has some progress to make. Until then Boca, Gooch, Goodson, and even Parkhurst (and probably Whitebread) are all above him.

  14. ManicMessiah says:

What a goal from Ben Arfa, Cisse scores again, plus Spurs lose to Norwich which means Newcastle are level on points with them! Dreamland.

  15. Mat says:

Ben Arfa is class. I hope Laurent Blanc calls him up for the Euro next summer. He can be the spark the French need to make a run.

  16. chupacabra says:

Funny how just two weeks ago the brilliant minds at ESPN (Macca/Cacca and the FatPieEatingTwat) were saying Newcastle had no chance at the top four.

  17. MemRook says:

Newcastle realistically challenging for CL spot! Who would have guessed that before the season started??? It’s like that movie, minus the Mexican of course. This time it’s a couple of Senagalese strikers.

  18. MemRook says:

Please oh pretty please let Fulham win against Chelscum today! It would move Fulham into 8th above Liverpool (added bonus, a club I truly detest, not just for fun, but truly truly cannot stand. F Liverpool!) and right below Everton who must be flying high after today’s 4-0 result AND above their hated foes. Come on you whites!!!!! Chelsea losing is always a plus too.

  19. PD says:

Whitbread? Since when do they allow wheelchairs the the pitch?

  20. elgringorico says:

Heh, sorry I didn’t mean to be too much of a d*ck! Hope you find a way to watch it.

  21. RLW2020 says:

    HAHA! good one.

  22. RLW2020 says:

no way Dempsey would transfer to Liverpool if they aren’t in International play especially if they are lower than Fulham! odds of both of those getting better every day.

  23. alka246 says:

Greg Berhalter won his first game as Manager at Hamarby

  24. Dimidri says:

not to be an anonymous internet snarker, but that isn’t even close to what he said…

  25. Air Jordanz says:

Well Hutton is also a horrible defender, so I think it’s probably moot.

  26. Air Jordanz says:

With his astounding injury rate and no track record with the USMNT, Zak Whitbread will never make the squad.

  27. thaDeuce says:

Go for another brace versus Chelsea Deuce!

  28. MemRook says:

To be fair, I think, at least I’m pretty sure, RLW2020 is merely speculating that if Fulham finishes above Liverpool, there is no chance of Deuce making a move to the reds. I don’t think he was responding directly to what i said, but rather making a general observation continuing on what I wrote.

  29. thaDeuce says:

he was saying, “added bonus, dempsey would not transfer to the team u hate most if fulham continue to win and liverpool doesn’t.”

  30. MemRook says:

For anyone who was wondering: watching the Villa game and Lichaj has looked ok. Nothing spectacular but nothing horrendous either. In other words, he definitely appears to belong out there with the rest of those guys. He hasn’t set the pitch on fire or anything, but he’s not supposed to. Solid, unnoticed games I think speak more highly of a defender’s performance than anything else.

  31. Zac says:

Thanks, I was wondering what was going on.

  32. MemRook says:

Also, if I’m not mistaken, that game when Lichaj scored and had the assist he was on the right side, his favored side. I think Lichaj is more comfortable getting forward and adding to the attack when he’s on the right, like making late runs into the box because it’s more natural for him to read the game from that side of the field. Something to think about as Nats fans.

  33. Dimidri says:

Fair enough, I read it as ‘no way what you said is true!’. Apologies.

  34. Mat says:

Yes, Whitbread is too injury prone unfortunately. My point was more that IF him and Ream are both healthy at a given time, he’s probably a more solid option than Ream at this point in their development.
Health is the most underrated skill, is it not?

  35. kev says:

Dempsey is at 15 league goals with 6 more games left (including the match right now against Chelsea).

you guys think he can get 20?

He’s arguably in contention for world class. You just know it. If he could score a few more goals, you have to figure he’d be in running for Player of the Year and Team of the Season

  36. kev says:

Lichaj is Cherundolo’s heir apparent but Cherundolo has still been quite good for Hannover so looks like he may have to wait another year or 2 to become a starter.

  37. thaDeuce says:

    how is he looking?

  38. Djep says:

Thank you… I didn’t ask, but I was wondering. I’m both at work and too busy to peak in on the game.

Would love further updates if/when you have a chance.

  39. away goals says:

Lichaj, johnson and chandler give us great flexibility at fullback.

Arguing over which left back gives us the best attacking ability will be a lot more fun than arguing over who’s the least awful.

  40. Polo says:

More mystery officiating benefiting a major club.

  41. Johnathan says:

Lichaj is Cherundolo’s heir apparent??? No I think that title goes to Chandler, dufus

  42. Polo says:

Commentators baffled by lack of cards to Chelsea. Meireles has committed 2 professional fouls to stop breaks on top of 2 other fouls and still hasn’t been given yellow.

  43. Yoreau Snaub says:

This is a tough argument to make, but enough with the name calling. There is more sense to kev’s argument than you realize.

Lichaj normally plays on the right at Villa, although he has been used at the left on occasion. Although it’s a really poor example, in the Gold Cup final, when Dolo was KO’d, Lichaj went from LB to RB, and Bornstein, the “experienced” LB, came in. To me, it made sense, although I would have rather seen Spector on the other side instead of seeing Bornstein at all. But anyway, Chandler makes a better left back than Lichaj does. And although Fabian Johnson looked lively in the LB spot, it was one game, due to injury, and we can’t set anything in stone yet.

  44. Yoreau Snaub says:

He finally got the yellow, on a play that probably didn’t deserve one.

On another note, Diarra has looked totally erratic – I know it’s only his 4th game with the club, but I just have a hard time watching him. It’s so unpredictable.

  45. Eddie says:

OK. Not much help up front for Dempsey. Jol has them playing a bit deep, but not as bad as against Man United a couple of weeks ago. He has one shot on a goal, but it was a fairly weak one (not his fault as the pass was not in front of him). Fulham, in general, have looked better as the match has gone on. Frei and Dembele both look pretty good.

  46. malkin says:

    Definitely a pleasant change!

  47. Polo says:

Yeah, looked like the referee needed an excuse to give him a card. Funny he chose the time that Raul touched nobody.

  48. thaDeuce says:

Why does he keep getting the start over Murphy (the captain and leader of the team for 4 years)? This baffles me. Why throw away all that leadership and chemistry at the end of the season?

  49. Polo says:

Dempsey just took a rocket clearance to the face.

  50. malkin says:

Heir apparent at RB would be chandler. He’s Chandler was playing left to fill the void. But now with Lichaj and Fabian Johnson (and at the moment Johnson seems to be my #1 pick) showing well at LB, can’t help but wonder if Timmy Chandler belongs on the right wing (where he’s played lately for his club) as long as ‘dolo is holding form.

  51. Polo says:

Officials need to start pulling out cards for cynical takedowns.

I don’t care if it’s Frank Lampard, he deserves a card when he hacks a guy down when he gets burned hard.

  52. malkin says:

Yes it was just one game for the US with Fabian, but it’s been week in week out at LB for Hoffenheim.

  53. Polo says:

Another game absolutely ruined by officials. Jesus Christ.

  54. MemRook says:

  55. DL says:

That was some MLS-level officiating right there.

  56. NATO says:

you guys think Torres will be called up for Spain? Spain has top strikers like Llorente and Soldado and also Negredo who has quality. Plus they have Pedro/Silva/Mata who can play as second strikers. And of course Villa who may be back from injury before euro2012.

    what do you think?

  57. Jort says:

You have to be kidding me. Unbelievable from the officials.

  58. MemRook says:

    First Manure now Chelscum. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhjhhh

  59. Eddie says:

They’re both playing. It’s a five-man midfield with Dempsey alone up front.

  60. Air Jordanz says:

Because Chandler CAN play on the right wing, it would make sense that he’d eventually see PT there.

If we have no better options for depth at RW behind LD than Danny Williams, why not play Johnson, Lichaj and Chandler, all at the same time, on their natural sides in positions they play for their club teams?

  61. NATO says:

If RVP heads to Barca or Madrid, does that mean Dempsey definitely will head to Arsenal?

  62. MemRook says:

Called in? Probably. In the final 21 or whatever it is. Debatable. I’d say at this point no.

  63. Mhat says:

Don’t think that is a penalty. It seemed that Murphy played the ball, Mikel went down. Only thing I noticed was the ball making contact with Murphy’s arm, although I am not sure if that was after Clattenburg blew the whistle.

  64. Polo says:

Okay, incompetency can only be claimed for so long. This is just pathetic.

  65. zag says:

If guys like Boyd, Agudelo, Bunbury, Shea can’t score, do who do we call up to the next WC for our strikers besides Clint and Jozy? I’d figure after the 2014 WC we shouldn’t have to rely so much on Dempsey/Donovan but if our young guns are not stepping up, we will be.

  66. Polo says:

RVP won’t be going to Barcelona. They still have Villa who will be coming back soon.

  67. Polo says:

Murphy clearly hits that ball. WTF is Macca talking about.

WTF is that ignorant fool talking about.

  68. MemRook says:

Fulham are always, ALWAYS a tale-of-two-halves team. Let’s hope that their better half comes out in the second and does some serious arse kicking. For the win. For justice!

  69. Polo says:

Man I’m so sick of this. I don’t even want to watch the EPL anymore.

The officiating this year is so consistently bad in favor of major clubs that claims of incompetency just don’t cut it for me anymore.

  70. away goals says:

Yeah and along with those guys, what if sapong, gomez, corona, taylor, gyau, gatt, adu, mcinerney, wooten, wood, nagbe and every prospect who hasn’t been called up yet all flame out over the next 2.5 professional seasons? It’s definitely time to panic.

  71. away goals says:

Are you this outraged when barca are gifted penalties?

Calls benefitting top teams is not unique to england.

  72. Tom Gaffney says:

Parkhurst is just too small and slow and he’s playing in an inferior league. Ream may be having a howler today, but he’s been very good of late. Did you really think that Ream would adjust to the top league in the world without any hiccups along the way?

  73. chris says:

    Amen same as La Liga

  74. TomG says:

No doubt Fab would be our best LB. The question is whether we need him more at another position, since he is undeniably one of our most skilled offensive talents.

  75. Polo says:

Replay shows Murphy doesn’t even touch Kalou who decided to take a dive.

  76. TomG says:

It would be so easy for the FA to put an end to diving. Just review the games on replay and assign a 10 game suspension to blatant divers.

  77. MemRook says:

Orrrrrrrrrr allow for video replay DURING the game. Have a sideline official designated to such decisions and it won’t take more than a minute to discern what really happened: the same amount of time it takes for teams to surround the ref and disagree.

  78. Polo says:

Yeah, but then they lose a tool to help their favored clubs. Can’t have that.

  79. bryan says:

RVP isn’t going to Barca, but it’s not because of Villa. Villa will get sold to PSG or something.

  80. MemRook says:

  81. Polo says:

    Dembele sucks. Selfish prick.

  82. Polo says:

Further replays show how egregious that penalty was. Kalou trips himself trying to do something with the ball and then just flops to the ground.

  83. MemRook says:

Deuce. Seriously. Just score all ready that’s what we’re all waiting for really.

  84. Polo says:

Kind of hard when Dembele does nothing to draw defenders and forces Dempsey to spend his time up top.

  85. elgringorico says:

  86. Polo says:

  87. MemRook says:

    YES!!!!!! YESS!!!!!!’nm

  88. ec says:

    DEMPSEY!!!! GOAL!!!!

  89. Francois says:

    CLINNNNTTTTTT!!!! 22!!!!

  90. nic d "the TEXAS 2 stepper" says:

  91. MemRook says:

    F yes!!!! Now you’re listening!!!!!

  92. nic d "the TEXAS 2 stepper" says:

    Happy now?

  93. MemRook says:

Alright go for the win now!

  94. Francois says:

Are they seriously thinking about making that an own goal? Effing ridiculous.

  95. cps says:

  96. Dainja says:

    TEXAS!!!!!! YA’LL B#TCHES CAN’T SEE ME!!!!!!!!!!!!

  97. Tyler says:

    Clintinho is an untamed beast!

  98. MemRook says:

Yes MUCH happier thanks. Two would send me into space.

  99. Polo says:

WTF Dempsey gets taken down WWE style by the shoulder from behind … 5 yards in front of the official… and he doesn’t do a thing?!!?!?!?!?!?

  100. NE Matt says:

Better not go down as an own goal. The Deuce is a fire flame spitter

  101. ec says:

Just wow, dude scores big goals. And lots of goals, is that 14 in 15 games?

I was going to say that Fulham look short of attackers with Johnson and (especially) Ruiz out today, but Fulham suddenly bossing the game.

  102. MemRook says:

    Ok let’s try that again:

Deuce. Just score a brace already. That’s all we’re waiting for really.

  103. CroCajun says:

Beautiful header by Deuce off a corner kick. Got it around the mid point of the box near the near post and sent it home to the back post with power. Looked to hit off of Cahil’s back on the way in.

  104. kev says:

16 league goals this season. 49 league goals in England.

Seriously he has to be 1 of the best buys ever in the PL era

  105. ec says:

No way, it was on frame, and if starts on frame, you get the goal.

  106. CroCajun says:

For those not watching, Deuce has been owning the center of the attacking third for Fulham. He’s been orchestrating the attack and playing in all the balls.

  107. TomG says:

Yes, in theory. In practice in the NFL, it always takes way longer than it actually should. I’d really like to avoid slowing the flow of the game which is so important – much moreso in soccer than in American sport, imo.

  108. TomG says:

You, sir, are a cynic :)

  109. TomG says:

    Deuce = Beast.

  110. MemRook says:

Well a point is probably fair but Still feel hard-done by that weak penalty to Chelsea. Deuce still unstoppable tho. Hell yeah Dempsey.

  111. ec says:

Dempsey is at 49 EPL goals in 180 appearances (6 years)

Giggs got his 50th in his 7th year and 235th appearance
Scholes got his 50th in his 8th year and over 200th appearance
Gerrard got his 50th in his 10th year and over 250th appearance
Lampard got his 50th in his 9th year and over 250th appearance

  112. wilyboy says:

ps. England, if you take another rightful goal away from Dempsey, you’re just afraid.

  113. MemRook says:

Wow thank you for that. I love this stat. I’m putting this on my profile. Ballin’. Stats may not mean much to some. But this is still hella cool.

  114. yay says:

seriously there needs to be a film based on Clint’s life? Call it DEUCE and have Soderberg or James Cameron direct it.

  115. ec says:

I hope it isn’t an Own Goal, because Dempsey owned the last 25 mins of the game, and overall owns Chelsea. Should be a selling point to Wenger.

  116. ec says:

    Such a good call!

  117. Shounen Bat says:

Awesome stats. Dempsey would get so much more respect if he were English…

  118. Shounen Bat says:

Are you a gimmick poster? I seriously see this same post every week, but slightly tweaked every time.

  119. ThaDeuce says:

Some things Deuce should think about after this one. Deuce started and played a full 90, getting the equalizer that should have been the game winner for a team which thoroughly outplayed Chelsea for stretches of the game. Drogba, a player more accomplished than Dempsey, subbed in late for Chelsea. Did not go the full 90.

However, he should also consider that Chelsea ARE playing Barca in the Champions League, so there is that. But who would start in that game, Deuce or Drogba?

Finally, Martin Jol did an excellent job tactically and using subs this game. excellent. I saw the last of the first half and all of the second, and from that I have to say Fulham deserved the win, and Deuce looked more threatening than all of Chelsea’s forwards.

  120. ThaDeuce says:

: ) From watching Fulham the past 4(?) years I must say that two things seem certain when they play Chelsea- a Dempsey header goal and rain.

Now, someone feel free to fact check that and ruin my inclination towards rain and Dempsey headers vs Chelsea.

  121. ec says:

Any Men In Blazers fans? If they take away Dempsey’s goal, he should at least get credit for an assist to Own Goal. It’s also a nice statistical consolation for taking a goal from the goal scorer.

  122. ThaDeuce says:

  123. ThaDeuce says:

    Hella Yeah!

  124. ThaDeuce says:

  125. ThaDeuce says:

Thanks, wasn’t watching the game at that point.

  126. Indigo Montoya says:

Against Stoke Demps hit a cracker and it was an OG. Legitimately so.

    link to

I’m starting the Dempsey conspiracy if his header today is ruled an OG.

  127. Kevin_Amold says:

Own goal is having a storming season…

  128. marco says:

The USA U17s beat Mexico 1-0 for 5th place in a European tournament today. With their recent win over Mexico’s U23s added in, the USA youth sides are not bad.

  129. marco says:

This weekend there have been 3 matches where official’s poor decisions favored the top clubs. If neither Murphy nor Kelly touched Kalou, that would make it 4-0 Big Teams. There are some who say, calls even out. Not true when top sides play lesser teams. Some say calls cannot be tabulated because many are debatable. However, when you just consider the clear unmistakable errors the bias is easily counted and calculated. This weekend Whales 3 Minnows 0, with just crystal clear errors.
