Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

Tim Howard and Everton's quest for silverware can move one step closer to bearing fruit today as the Toffees take on arch-rival Liverpool today in a highly-anticipated FA Cup semifinal showdown at Wembley Stadium (7:30 am, Fox Soccer Channel).

The Toffees have enjoyed an outstanding run of form in Premier League play, and will look to make their second FA Cup Final appearance in four years with a win against a Liverpool side that has endured a disappointing season in league play.

If the morning FA Cup edition of the Merseyside Derby is too early in the morning for you, there is plenty more soccer to choose from today. In Germany, first-place side and defending champion Borussia Dortmund will look to keep the momentum going from their impressive win against Bayern Munich by beating Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen, while Jozy Altidore and AZ Alkmaar take on PSV Eindhoven in a key Dutch League clash between title contenders.

In Spain, Real Madrid take on Sporting Gijon while Barcelona face Levante in the final matches before their crucial Clasico showdown at Camp Nou.

  1. Citronomics says:

Horrid defending by Carragher. He should probably get an assist for Jelavic’s goal.

  2. Citronomics says:

Sweet Lord. Distin blunder on the back pass and Suarez pounces!

  3. KevDC says:

    Big break for LFC!

  4. deepvalue says:

    Carroll is a lumbering oaf.

  5. Citronomics says:

Carroll with a back of the head flick to give LFC the lead with 3+ change. Credit to Bellamy for nice bend and placement on the free kick.

  6. deepvalue says:

    Carroll is an aerial genius.

  7. deepvalue says:

That save by Howard was amazing. Thought it had to be off the post at first.

  8. Citronomics says:

In those few moments when he’s not lumbering like an oaf :-)

  9. Matt S says:

Thanks Andy for doing what you can to help qualify Newcastle for Europe!

  10. g? says:

Dolo to blame for HSV’s opener.
    HSV 1:0 HSV(96)

  11. Josh says:

Rogers starts for Leeds…and is taken off with an injury at 12′..ugh.

  12. charlie says:

Dortmund leading 2-1 at Schalke. Good game so far from Jones.

  13. g? says:

Jermaine waited until minute 84 to get carded.
In a heated rivalry game no less.

  14. Jon says:

That was one hell of a strong tackle. Not sure that shouldn’t have been red.

  15. hogatroge says:

Silly me… I actually thought he break the mold this game.

He’s had a couple card-worthy challenges so far, though, so it was inevitable I guess.

  16. g? says:

I assumed he was already on a yellow card, so I thought it was red either way.

  17. g? says:

German commentary thought JJ-YC was the best player on either side, so there’s that.

  18. huhe888 says:

No Serie A matches this weekend. Entire calendar will be pushed back 1 week.

  19. huhe888 says:

For live soccer fix at 12noon ET, check out the 2nd half of Independiente vs Racing Club on TyC Sports USA (DIRECTV Ch. 427, Verizon FiOS.)

The Avanelleda Derby has to be played at noon local time (11am New York Time) due to police request.

The Barra Bravas from both sides are impossible to control even during daylight hours.

  20. Victor says:

Did anyone just hear the greatest goal call of all time on GOLTV in the Madrid vs Madrid game? Omg if not here is what the guy said…..”This is not just a dream, its a wet dream of orgasmic proportions, and this one deludes everybody, it seduces everybody at Real Madrid’s fine, that’s for sure.” I don’t know who it is but this announcer is amazing haha

  21. Victor says:

    fine club*

  22. huhe888 says:

Relegation in Mexico can be decided tonight.

Atlas has 3 chances to reach safety. Any victory or 3 consecutive draws will do.

Tecos need a miracle: 3 wins in a row and home that Atlas lose twice and does not win again.

  23. CrispyST3 says:

    probably ray hudson lol

  24. Jon says:

    Come on you Fighting Josmers!

  25. huhe888 says:

    Ray Hudson

    link to

The call has gone viral. It was also featured on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thurday night.

“AAAAAAARRRRREE YOU KIDDING ME!!! A-STONISHING!!! THIS IS NOT JUST A DREAM, IT’S A WET DREAM OF ORGASMIC PROPORTIONS!!! And this one deludes everybody, it seduces everybody in Real Madrid’s fanclub that’s for sure. The wonder strike from Cristiano. This has got more curves to it than Jessica Rabbit on steroids. Take a look at this. It’s flyin all over the job. Unbelievable! Look at that! It’s a phenomenal technique. He gets it up on the ball and it arches like an incredible rainbow. Astonishing wonder strike from Cristiano!”

  26. Victor says:

Dang my mistake guys I thought it was a a live game but ya I looked it up and it was Hudson haha

  27. predicto says:

All PSV so far – now with a goal.

  28. g? says:

Get a decent keeper AZ, and maybe you’ll win the title. I had high hopes Jozy could win the championship in his first season there. Now not as likely…

  29. King James says:

Ray Hudson is worth the price of admission when paying extra with your cable provider for GolTV.

He’s a homer for Barca/Real Madrid but listening to is equally entertaining as the match itself.

  30. JG13 says:

    JOZY!!! Beautiful goal!!!

  31. slowreno says:

  32. g? says:

  33. Jon says:

    Jozy with a cracker!

Ripped in the far corner from 25 yards out.

  34. chris says:

JOZY!!!!!!!!!!! So happy the games on TV

  35. Brian S. says:

Freaking GOLAZO Altidore! What a bomb!

  36. predicto says:

SUPERIOR long range turn calm shot and goal – Altidore!

  37. dank says:

    Holy moley!

  38. jones says:

Nice! The game’s been boring but at least Jozy gets a good one.

  39. josh says:

    Jesus….what a rocket!

  40. Dillon says:

Jozy with the finest goal by an American this year.

  41. ... says:

Tecos only have 2 games left. The max possible points they can have in the relegation standings is 106; Atlas has 3 games left and is currently at 104. Tecos need to win both of theirs AND have Atlas gain no more than 2 points.

(I’m not sure what happens if two teams finish equal ppg average from an equal number of games played, so if Tecos win both of theirs and Atlas draws twice and loses once, I don’t know who’s getting relegated).

Tecos are hosting Queretaro and at Cruz Azul. I can see them beating Q, but not CA.

Atlas, though, are hosting Monterrey and Santos and at Monarcas. They could lose all 3… but Tecos still need back-to-back wins.

  42. huhe888 says:

Hudson will be calling Boca Juniors and River Plate matches next season if GOLTV does not sell itself to Qatar Media by August.

Qatar Media blew away GOLTV-ESPN Deportes and Univision Deportes Network for U.S. media rights to La Liga starting next season. The bid by Qatar Media exceeded the annual subscriber revenue of GOLTV and ESPN Deportes COMBINED.

beIN Sports USA should launch by August.

Don’t know yet how Qatar Media will air el Clasico next season. The “early favorite” is Telemundo (via a time-buy agreement.)

  43. predicto says:

30 min in and Altidore has by far the best touches passes runs for AZ today

  44. predicto says:

  45. g? says:

Close offsides call kept Jozy from being in alone on goal… Grr

  46. Jon says:

Jozy must have only been inches offside there.

  47. Jon says:

…ah well, Beerens scores on a similar strike about 30 seconds later.

  48. predicto says:

Beerens with another for 1-2 AZ lead against PSV at home.

  49. ian says:

    Really entertaining game!

  50. chris says:

    Jeremy Lens is raw

  51. g? says:

I always felt that the Dutch were more than willing to have less European success in exchange for having the most exciting league. Midweek might be boring, but there are a LOT more league games per year.

I’m lookin’ at you, Serie A…

  52. Ryan says:

AZ-PSV one of the most entertaining games I’ve seen in awhile.

  53. wilyboy says:

My favorite was the game when he praised Messi’s “Liza Minelli Cabaret performance!” Who is this man!?!

  54. JG13 says:

Which is kind of funny because before Jozy’s goal, it was a bit of a snooze-fest. With the way AZ’s keeper is parrying the ball and the strikes that they’re having had at the other end, this isn’t likely to finish 2-1.

  55. mr coolio says:

    Wanna rethink that statement?

  56. GorillaWearsJockStraps says:

all the more reason to watch Boca/River. i pretty much latched onto bundesliga a few years back simply cause i thought allen fountain was entertaining to listen to. its my style. a good announcer goes along way towards attracting marginal fans

  57. Jon says:

Jozy with the early exit, as usual.

He has been favoring his ankle since that tangle in the box early 2nd half though…

  58. predicto says:

Kinda got to be a snooze-fest again here in the second half….Hoping AZ can end on top

  59. Tony in Quakeland says:

    7 to go….

  60. fischy says:

Hudson has used that metaphor before, which leads me to a question:

Aren’t all wet dreams of “orgasmic proportions”?

  61. g? says:

    Get some DEFENSE AZ!!

  62. g? says:

(this doesn’t get you out of your obligatory update on the ‘weekend rewind’ page though 😛 )

  63. JG13 says:

It’s not just AZ – it’s pretty much a league wide issue.

  64. Ryan says:

    Benschop really sucks

  65. g? says:

They’re better than most at conceding late against other top teams.
Ajax, Twente last week and this week come to mind…

  66. g? says:

Bye bye title hopes, probably also to the Champions League.

  67. JG13 says:

Understood. All I’m saying is that the defending in the Eredivisie is poor in general. So, if a team with the lead doesn’t possess/attack, it is going to concede.

Also, time for a new pair of gloves for Alvarado.

  68. jones says:

That was horrible! Keeper and defense had a really poor game…

  69. marco says:

AZ goalie implodes once again. He’s too concerned about gamesmanship (CONCACAF) than playing, and it costs AZ a point.

  70. marco says:

Ribery has done his late season disappearing act once again.

  71. Tony in Quakeland says:

Happy to oblige…and I’m prepared for the storm of abuse that will come my way when he stalls at 24!

  72. kev says:

he really does indeed. He’s Jozy’s only competition and it doesn’t even seem he’s much of that. AZ need a better GK and focus on their defense and maybe another striker or 2.

but even if they finish 2nd they go to the CL

  73. NATO says:

Jozy’s 14th league goal of the season. It’s amazing. He’s scored like 5-6 goals in just the past 2months. He’s on FIRE.

Maybe next season he can score 20-25 goals

  74. huhe888 says:

Looks like FOX Soccer will have French League Cup final at 3pm ET as replacement programming for the Serie A.

  75. huhe888 says:

No such luck. Re-air of FA Cup semifinal match instead.

  76. hogatroge says:

Anyone know what happened to Robbie Rogers?

Got the start for Leeds but subbed off in 12’?
