Toronto FC knocks off Montreal, Whitecaps advance in Canadian Championship

Toronto FC accomplished something on Wednesday night that they have failed to do in nearly two months: they won a game.

Toronto was victorious for the first time in a match across any competition since the middle of March, topping the Montreal Impact, 2-0, at BMO Field in the second leg of their semifinals series in the Amway Canadian Championship. The first leg, played last Wednesday, ended in a scoreless draw.

Toronto FC played down a man for 73 minutes of the game after Richard Eckersley was shown a red card, but they advanced to the tournament final for a fifth straight year thanks in part to first-half goals from Reggie Lambe and Ryan Johnson.

The Reds' opponent for the tournament final on May 26 will be the Vancouver Whitecaps, who beat NASL club FC Edmonton, 3-1, at BC Place on Wednesday night. Vancouver rode a pair of goals from Sebastien Le Toux and an insurance tally from Darren Mattocks to claim the result that saw them advance on aggregate, 5-1.

What do you think of Toronto FC's win over the Impact? Do you see them building on this victory? Expecting the Whitecaps to defeat TFC in the Canadian Championship final?

    Gotta love the Impact supporters.

First they rip off two seats and toss them at Toronto FC fans as they are leaving from the stands, then they toss a flare at the TFC fans, then they try to fight the police and security…Only in Montreal.

    Stay classy Montreal.

  2. fischy says:

Gotta say this about Mattocks…Wait for it….he really burned Edmonton.

  3. Gnarls says:

Congrats on the win, TFC – emphasis on the singular ‘win.’

Seriously, I mean he was on fire.

  5. Soccer Man says:

So Toronto are champions of Canada. They can’t win a single game in MLS but are the champions of Canada. That really makes Canada look good doesn’t it?

  6. Poulet says:

They have to beat Vancouver for that to happen.

  7. Shane says:

The Vancouver – Edmonton match officiating was awful. The Nanchoff goal that was called back is one of the worst calls ever. The lines man had the top of box as line to judge from, not as if you needed it though, and he couldnt get the call right.

  8. Shane says:

I heard Mattocks was really cookin’

The red card against Eckersley was awful.

    Mayyyybe a yellow… not a red.
