Toronto FC thrashes Montreal

For two straight games, Toronto FC watched two-goal leads disappear and saw key points be dropped by a shoddy defense that has plagued them all season.

TFC flipped the script on Wednesday night, and instead of blowing a two-goal lead, they found a third goal and ran away with a 3-0 thrashing of the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo.

Torsten Frings, Ryan Johnson and Danny Koevermans all provided goals for Toronto, which recorded just their second win of the season as the beleaguered TFC defense posted a rare shutout.

With the match scoreless at halftime, Toronto took control when Frings powered a free kick past Montreal goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts to open the scoring. Johnson tallied his own finish off a Nick Soolsma assist in the 72nd minute, while Koevermans delivered the final dagger just six minutes later.

The loss was Montreal’s first at their new home, Stade Saputo, a defeat that keeps the Impact outside of the top five in the Eastern Conference.

Here are the match highlights:

What did you think of Toronto FC’s performance? Starting to wonder if they can make an improbable playoff push? Disappointed with Montreal’s effort in such a big match?

is Nesta really coming to TFC??? That would be a BIG stabilizer for the back 4.

  2. TFCfan says:

^Apparently he’s already signed and an ITC is pending.

  3. Bryan says:

for leadership alone, that is huge – the spine of TFC will be very strong with Nesta in the back four, Frings & JDG in Mid and Koevs up front

  4. VinegarOfHesselink says:

    horrific attendance

  5. dont_panic says:

Hopefully they can use this momentum to keep going.

8 points in past 15 (should have been 12) is decent.

More fans at BMO for the last place teams home games than at Saputo for the L’impact inaugural season does not look good.

  6. dont_panic says:

should be 8 points in last 5 games..

  7. Gnarls says:

Happy for TFC to actually close out a game! They’ve played well the last several weeks so it’s been disappointing to see them give up late goals.

  8. Javier says:

Horrific MLS scheduling. Wednesday games are always lower in quality. They should be pushed to Friday night, a spot they can really own with NBC Sports. If the season has to be lengthened a bit, they should do it.

  9. Pete says:

Damn, was it really Winter? This team can score when it wants to.

  10. Siberian says:

TFC player-for-player was never that bad. I think they will not finish in last place.

  11. Rod says:

If they were to ever play Plata, this team could be onto something.

  12. No says:

    He’s injured.

Any Impact fans that can explain why the Impact could sell 60,000 at the temporary stadium but have had terrible attendances since moving into their actual stadium?
