Olympic Soccer: USA vs. North Korea (Match Day Commentary)

U.S. Soccer Federation        NorthKorea

After two Olympic victories, the U.S. women's national team aims to make it a Group G sweep in its match against North Korea at Old Trafford in Manchester, England (12:15 p.m., NBC Sports Network, stream on NBCOlympics.com).

The Americans have combined for seven goals in victories over France and Colombia, but much of the focus has shifted to goalkeeper Hope Solo and her pointed tweets at former U.S. standout and current television analyst Brandi Chastain.

The United States will be facing a team playing for its survival, as North Korea is currently tied with France for second place in the group on three points. North Korea can still qualify for the knockout stage as a third-place qualifier, but Canada and New Zealand are also in contention for third-place berths, meaning North Korea would need at least a point to be safe.

SBI will be providing live commentary on today's match so please feel free to follow along with the action here. As always, you are welcome to share your own thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action (Commentary is after the jump):

  1. Meow says:

    Defeat the Yankee Imperialists!

  2. Dave says:

Do the NK players ever feel guilty about all the food they are stealing from their starving countrymen?

  3. Bark says:

Go Yankees! Defeat the oppressive regime!

  4. ZeBurto says:

same can be said for the Americans these days. The US is now a Third World Nation as well.

  5. AL says:

Probably about as guilty as the US players feel for bombing some innocent civilians in some village in Afghanistan.

  6. what if says:

O/T but is is true Fulham offered Dempsey a new contract worth 70K a wEEK?

  7. what if says:

    sAY WHAT.

Now of course the cost of living is higher and social welfare isn’t enough to help it but how can u say that at all? The gulf between rich and poor is vast but not that vast. Go to the poor in England and Sweden and tell them they’re 3rd world

  8. Scott says:

Anybody know why the audio is slightly ahead of the video again? I’m sick of Arlo White telling me it the post before it actually does.

  9. sayitaintso says:

if the Koreans win, will the US claim they were all on drugs?

  10. John F says:

NBC’s commentary is running ahead of the video again…

  11. WK says:

hmm, get PAID, or play CL soccer and live in Liverpool. seems like an easy choice to me. besides, Fulham look to have gotten stronger and Jol is a good manager.

  12. AL says:

    …everybody but Hope Solo

  13. Dug says:

I have news for you – people are starving in the USA. You need to leave your gated community once in a while.

  14. Scott says:

You’d think they would have fixed that after two games

  15. pgloerse says:

I am on the nbcolympics website and getting no commentary at all…its nice – anyone else having this problem?

  16. john says:

    WHy the censorship?
It was a good question –
If the Koreans win, will the US accuse them of using drugs. It has happened once already. the US has become a bunch of cry babies.

  17. John F says:

Is it just me or does Megan Rapinoe look off her game today? Passing has been very sloppy.

  18. John F says:

None of the online streams I’ve watched have had commentary, regardless of sport.

  19. jones says:

yeah, and her crossing has been sub-par. She’s like this sometimes. I wish Pia would have just rested her the whole game. There’s really no reason to play all your starters. But Pia is stubborn and does this often.

  20. Kevin_amold says:

The “starvation” occurring in the US is miniscule, if it is even occurring at all. This is ridiculous.

  21. Kevin_amold says:

    They will not. Next topic.

  22. georkt says:

Thank you sir. By the way are Chinese actors still impersonating North Korean fans? True story from a soccer tournament. I forgot which one.

  23. truthbetold says:

The US is paying foreign Islamist mercenaries to impersonate Syrian freedom fighters. What’s worse?

  24. Don Pelayo says:

Chastain is doing her best John Harke’s impression again.

  25. gacm32 says:

Am I the only one who gets frustrated with our WNT? Their passing is so horrible, and they play long balls in the air hopelessly forward way too often. They can play a good possession game, they just refuse to most of the time.

  26. what if says:

people starve when they have no good. That is not to suggest the whole nation is Third World. Simply state the vast difference in social income and well being.

Don’t throw out such a huge and descriptive term. Because the poor in Africa would seriously be envy of the poor and starving here okay Dungbeetle

  27. Andy in Atlanta says:

My guess is Amy Rod gets a late goal here…

  28. Yup, it’s just you. While other nations rise and fall the USWNT is ALWAYS at the top. Stop your crying.

  29. Dan in New York says:

Liverpool is not in the Champions League and who knows when they’ll be back in with or without Clint.

  30. Dan in New York says:

Yeah, that’s really annoying. I was going to post about the same thing. It was the same in the U.S. game against Colombia. Most noticeable when there’s a shot on goal.

  31. FulhamPete says:

A-Rod is the Eddie Johnson of the WNT. The human turnover.

  32. A says:

The more I listen, the more I agree with Hope Solo. She is freaking awful. How about that 5 minute stretch where she talked about her husband? NOBODY CARES. And to suggest that it was her husband who convinced Abby Wambach to be a hard worker? Seriously?!

  33. gacm32 says:

Oh great, this dude. I swear, you have to be the most irritating person on this board. Most of the time, you give no insightful analysis, yet believe that you know more than anyone else that posts here. All you do is insult people, I’d bet my house that you’re probably a miserable person to be around.

  34. A says:

You mean like when they just had half their team caught for steroid usage and are now banned from the next World Cup?

You act like the accusation has no merit. Um hello they were caught. The entire team is banned from major tournaments by FIFA.

  35. Don Pelayo says:

It is indeed absurd. She probably does know much about soccer since she was a good player, but she Chastain is a terrible commentator.

When will American television networks learn that being an articulate and engaging presenter has nothing to do with being a former player?

  36. Don Pelayo says:

Ironic that I criticize someone for being inarticulate and then proceed to publish a post with a typo.

    “she Chastain” = “Chastain”

  37. jones says:

exactly. And it took FOREVER to get her out of the starting lineup even though Morgan was already a scoring machine. My prediction is that Arod drops off the team altogether by the next World Cup. Though Pia is terrible about bringing in new players so we’ll see.

  38. Dave says:

How can we be the fattest country in the world and still have people starving? We’ve defined starving down.

  39. Dave says:

The Taliban called; your check is in the mail.
