McCoist alludes to potential Stoke City move for Edu

Maurice Edu and Geoff Cameron teamed together in central defense to do their part in the U.S. men's national team's first-ever win on Mexican soil last week. It appears as if the two may be joining forces much more frequently for the foreseeable future.

According to Rangers manager Ally McCoist, Edu's representation alerted him to a potential transfer to Stoke City, a move that would facilitate his transfer out of the fourth-tier Scottish club and into the English Premier League where he would be teammates with Cameron.

"We hear from his agent that there is a potential deal to be done with Stoke," McCoist told BBC Scotland.

On Monday, McCoist said that League Championship side Ipswich Town had submitted an offer for Edu. While a move to the Premier League would undoubtedly be a step up from that, it remains to be seen where he would fit in with Stoke, which currently has Honduran international Wilson Palacios, Glenn Whelan and Dean Whitehead entrenched as central midfielders.

  1. Felix says:

I thought Stoke City was already stacked at CB…….

  2. elgringorico says:

On the surface this is really good but you also want him to go where he is actually going to play. Just sayin.

  3. Jon says:

    Get in, Edu.

It appears they plan to move Cameron from CB to MF. Maybe Edu does the opposite? Or they could be really nice to us as USMNT fans and make them their new CB pair…but now I’m just being hopeful.

We can lament Stoke and their “anti-football”, but it’s still better than being in the Championship and a hell of a long way from Scotland.

  4. rambo says:

Will be tough to get playing time, but would rather see him in the premier league than in the championship.

  5. KillerInstinct says:

This would be great…this would be an automatic plug in, in the CB duo, for Klinsi…that is, if Edu can win/hold a starting position in Stoke. Then again, they would still have to compete for Bocanegra’s and Goodson’s spot for the USMNT.

  6. Zing! says:

Is this a free move or low price deal?

  7. QuakerOtis says:

I hear ya, but consider this: Since the USMNT is crowded at CM, and since Edu is near the bottom of that group(to the point where JK tried him out at CB) would it be all that bad to have Edu in a competitive battle for CM or CB at an EPL club? Just saying.

  8. Stoked says:

    Stoke the new Fulham

  9. QuakerOtis says:

Didn’t realize you said “just saying” too. Not trying to mock you, hope it doesn’t come off that way. USA!

  10. Adam says:

Players are only as entrenched as their circumstances allow them to be. I say do it. The USMNT is stacked at CM (even more so if Danny Williams ever gets a shot at his preferred spot) so it can only help Edu.

  11. elgringorico says:

    Good point man. Just sayin.

  12. Justin says:

Edu doesn’t break legs at nearly the pace required to cement a starting place at Stoke, especially since he is neither a 6’5” ork nor can he heave a throw-in 50 yards.

  13. MiamiAl says:

Anywhere would be a good move for Edu. The guy is young and skilled at multiple positions…Why wouldn’t Stoke want him?

  14. argh says:

I’d have preferred for him to head to France but Stoke isn’t bad. A nice mid table club. He may not be a sure starter but he could definitely challenge for it.

  15. QuakerOtis says:

Just curious, since I’ve heard this a lot, why France?

  16. Illmatic74 says:

So team America is now Stoke City? Sigh.

  17. hush says:

I hope this deal goes through. If we can have Cameron and Edu win a starting position for Stoke, I would be crazy STOKED!.. Well, a lot of U.S fans would be Stoked.

  18. 2tone says:

I have a feeling Stoke are not confident in Palacios or any other of there Cm’s. If this goes through that might just push Cameron to CB(where he would be better suited for Stoke), and they can use Edu at CDM. And I would take Edu at CDM over most of Stokes CDM options.

People seem to forget that Palacios is injury prone as well.

  19. Jon says:

    Go Mo Go.

  20. nelsinho says:

real men do whatever it takes to avoid an altercation. just sayin. 😀

  21. Illmatic74 says:

The shouldn’t be confident in their CMs. Whelan and Whiteheaad were their starters there in the first game.

  22. Brian says:

Sochaux gave Rangers a lowball offer last summer that they denied.

  23. Old School says:

    I thought that was Everton.

  24. elgringorico says:

If they want to win the ENTIRE American fanbase in a crazy marketing move, they would sign Mo and Deuce. Just sayin.

  25. argh says:

i JUST pray that Edu/Cameron don’t compete for the same position. I know they have a primary position but they experiment with another.

  26. argh says:

More technical league. Lesser competition for a starting spot for him in the clubs that were in the chase for him.

  27. Shane says:

silly, you know Deuce aint going to Stoke. And while it is possible for me to dislike Stoke less than I do now if they were to have Cameron and Edu, no way do I become a fan.

  28. Eurosnob says:

The idea of having Cameron/Edu pairing at CB at an EPL side should have the USMNT fans stoked! Realistically, the chances of this happening are remote. Edu’s signing with Stoke must happen and both Edu and Cameron would have to beat the current CBs at Stoke for the starting job.

  29. UndertheSquegee says:

    That’s what s/he said.

  30. Jay says:

Edu should go where he can play first and foremost but if you cant do that then go where the inter squad competition will be the toughest. If you cant improve on the field then improve in practice. I’m surprised a team like everton or a lower tier epl squad hasn’t at least looked in on him. I still like Ligue 1 is best for him if he can find a squad.

  31. Mike r says:

The idea of them playing together at cb would excite me to have our Future A team cb tandem playing together. … The reality is they will play midfield so our b team midfield will be playing together at Stoke City instead

  32. nic d "the TEXAS 2 stepper" says:

He plays Fellaini’s position. Note that I said Fellaini’s position. He would be a Jack Rodwell replacement and would have to bust some serous hump to move Fellaini out.

  33. RLW2020 says:

    United Stokes of America

  34. RLW2020 says:

they best thing possible for the USNT would be if Edu and Cameron started on the same club and in the same spots they do for the US… we will see if that is possible… anyway anything is better than Rangers!!!

  35. Jay says:

Yeah Fellaini is really good I’m surprised Everton has held onto him this long. That said Edu could be a good sub I really doubt he could replace Fellaini.

  36. GW says:

These are all just rumors but if true let’s not get too carried away with the Mexico game.

Edu can play elsewhere and he offers them some versatility.

If Pulis was thinking of playing Cameron in midfield, now he has Edu, a full time midfielder to play there.

The EPL is a ridiculously long and wearing season so versatility is always prized ( see United, Manchester)

  37. GW says:

UEFA ranks the European leagues by a formula that includes how competitive their teams are. France ranks very high, much higher than Scotland so Edu would be facing tougher competition there.

  38. Rob says:

Just curious, what happened with Valencia?

  39. CrispyST3 says:

That actually made me laugh haha

  40. Roger says:

I doubt as CB… Did you see Edu against Mexico? Crap

  41. Weaksauce says:

Edu locked it down at CB vs mexico, he had a few mishaps because its not his natural position, but overall did well

  42. argh says:

supposedly a rumor or outright fabrication. Valencia is a huge club, EDU would be bench warming for months

  43. Good Jeremy says:

    me likey

  44. jon says:

all hail, the United Stokes of America

  45. bottlcaps says:

The real value for EDU is not at Centreback or midfield, it’s the fact that he can step in and play either position. Utility position players are rare because a lot of coaches would rather see a position played by a person dedicated, trained and skilled at that position only.

But as budgets grow (and shrink) players get injured and the amount of games being played grows in the EPL (and all other leagues) the idea that a position player can step from midfield to the back line competently make a lot of coaches feel more secure in moving players to another position DURING a game without sacrificing an additional sub.

  46. hogatroge says:

Fellaini was deployed as a forward yesterday.

  47. David says:

At this point I imagine he’s happy to play almost anywhere other than the 4th tier in Scotland. Whether or not the team in question is stacked in any one position or not.

  48. THomas says:

I’ll stick with fulham. Even after the Americans have left. Then one day in the future I will win the lottery, buy fulham from king fayed and import the US national team to compete under the crest of FFC on the club level only to emerge as world cup winners on British soil in 2026 as team USA!!!!

    Mwaaaa ha ha ha haaaaa

  49. CplDaniel says:

At the moment, they are the new Bolton. Side that was promoted a few years back, usually expected to finish in the bottom 7, but absent a run of bad form have an above 50% odds of finishing above the relegation zone. And has just signed a 1 or a couple of US MNT players.

Fulham, I think has a higher status, and is reasonably expected to finish mid-table each year. If Stoke hits mid-table, then it’s considered a good year for them.

  50. Bob says:

real men do whatever is possible to avoid using “just saying”

  51. Josh says:

Sometimes this forum needs a like button.

  52. A.D.Faye.God says:

Stoke fan here, very little info on an Edu move here, but I think its safe to say that it looks unlikely. Cameron is definitely going to be used mainly as a defensive central midfielder. Competition for the position looks strong on paper, but actually, if Cameron has a good start to the season, the position could easily be his – Whitehead and Whelan have both shown weaknesses in the last couple of seasons and Palacios has barely played (who knows why). Also, we are rumoured to be getting Tom Huddlestone in from Spurs on a 12 month loan (so Edu even less likely).

Oh and don’t rule out Cameron spending a lot of time at Right Back (outside back?) this season either, Pulis loves to play centre backs there if they pass the ball too much.

And one last thing, Pulis said earlier in the Summer that he liked the American market, and was surprised that more USA players weren’t in the English leagues – so maybe more US players to Stoke in the next couple of seasons?

  53. …but he said he would have preferred France over Stoke City, which plays in England not Scotland.

  54. dynamofan says:

Is it “jus sayin” or “just saying”. We need some an acronym for this, I propose JS.

  55. Four Cents says:

Moe can play just about anywhere (i think the only one I haven’t seem him play is keeper- :P)- I’m stoked about Stoke as well.. If this trade goes through, Stoke could be one of my new favorite teams to watch… Lets go you Yanks!!!

  56. nic d "the TEXAS 2 stepper" says:

they got a guy named Gago and then there was no room for Edu!

  57. bryan says:

actually it was because they went with Gago instead of Edu.
