Sunday Ticker: Marcelo out 3 months, Lampard out for England, & more

By BRYAN ROBISON

Brazil and Real Madrid defender Marcelo will miss at least three months after breaking his foot in training for a friendly against Japan. It is not known whether the veteran left back will undergo surgery, as he is set to undergo tests after he returns to Spain on Monday.

Regardless of whether surgery is required or not, he will remain on the sidelines for at least the remainder of the year. Marcelo mentioned that he will return as soon as possible, and that he will be ready for the 2013 Confederations Cup, which Brazil will host in June.

Here are some more stories from Sunday:

LAMPARD AMONG INJURED FOR ENGLAND’S QUALIFIER vs. POLAND

After missing Friday’s win against San Marino, Lampard and Bertrand will be absent again as England takes on Poland in Warsaw on Tuesday. Bertrand was hoping to recover from an illness in time to play on Tuesday, but was unable to do so. In addition, Theo Walcott will also miss Tuesday’s match due to a chest injury suffered against San Marino.

Lampard, who has been dealing with a calf injury, failed to pass a physical test in order to be ruled fit enough to play on Tuesday. The trio of injuries will force England coach Roy Hodgson to alter his lineup, which had no problems against San Marino in the 5-0 win. He will have three members back in the lineup that were not available on Friday, as Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson return from suspension, while Ashley Cole will be available after being rested on Friday.

KEANE RULED ELIGIBLE FOR IRELAND vs. FAROE ISLANDS

Following a 6-1 drubbing to Germany, Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni had but little choice in having Robbie Keane join the Irish squad in time for Tuesday’s match with the Faroe Islands. The country’s all-time leading scorer missed Friday’s loss against Germany due to an Achilles injury. Keane will look to inject some life to an offense that has struggled throughout World Cup Qualifying.

FELIPE SIDELINED BY SPORTS HERNIA

Montreal Impact midfielder Felipe will be sidelined for the final two matches of the season due to sports hernia surgery. The Brazilian will undergo surgery on Tuesday, with a date for his return yet to be announced. In 30 matches with Montreal in his and Montreal’s debut MLS season, Felipe led the team with 10 assists, while knocking in four goals.
