Mid-Week College Rewind: Providence stuns UConn, Notre Dame topples Marquette, and more

Providence College headed into Wednesday night’s match against SBI No. 3-ranked UConn having won just three matches all year. The Friars didn’t figure to stand much of a chance against UConn’s stingy defense and high-powered offense, but their own outstanding defensive display helped them pull off one of the biggest upsets of the college season.

Sophomore midfielder Marcos Ugarte powered home a cross from senior Keith Jecewiz in the 55th minute to give Providence the only goal they need. The rest was up to the Friars defense and goalkeeper Keassal Broome, who made three saves in Providence’s 1-0 victory on Wednesday afternoon.

Notre Dame took advantage of UConn’s slip to create a four-way logjam atop the Big East Blue Division after posting a 3-1 victory against SBI No. 5 Marquette. The No. 7-ranked Fighting Irish shook off an early Marquette goal to rattle off three unanswered scores. Senior forward Ryan Finley scored twice to run his season total to 16 goals.

Marquette won’t have to wait long to have a chance for revenge. The Golden Eagles play host to Notre Dame on Saturday.

The week has had other upsets, with No. 15 Northwestern falling to Northern Illinois, and Elon knocking off No. 24 Wake Forest, 1-0, on Tuesday.

  1. Meves broke the Akron all time record for shut outs with that 1-0 victory over Ohio State. Apparently he needed to make some good saves to do. Congrats to him. Ohio State always a tough match-up for Akron.
