Thursday Kickoff: Terry accepts ban, Liverpool injury woes mount, and more

John Terry has given up fighting the racism charges filed against him by the English FA, and has apologized for his remarks aimed at Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand.

“I want to apologize to everyone for the language I used,” Terry said in a statement released by his representatives.

Terry’s decision not to appeal the ban and £220,000 fine imposed by the FA means he can begin serving his suspension. He will miss Chelsea’s upcoming meeting with Tottenham, as well as a pair of matches against Manchester United.

In somewhat related news, the English FA has fined Chelsea defender Ashley Cole £90,000 for his vulgar tweet aimed at the FA following its decision to suspend Terry.

Here are some other stories to get your Thursday going:

Reina injured, Borini sidelined for Liverpool

A day after learning that striker Fabio Borini would miss three months with a broken foot, Liverpool has now learned that goalkeeper Jose Reina has returned from international duty with a hamstring strain.

The Borini injury leaves the Reds with a serious striker shortage, which has led to rumors that the club will go after Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge during the winter transfer window.

Reina is considered doubtful for Liverpool’s match against Reading on Saturday, which means Brad Jones will likely step in and start.

Neymar makes 200th Santos appearance a memorable one

Brazilian national team star Neymar is only 200, but he already reached the 200 appearance mark for storied Brazilian club Santos, and he celebrated that occasion on Wednesday by wearing the jersey number 200 and scoring a pair of beautiful goals.

Facing Ronaldinho and Atletico Mineiro just a day after scoring two goals in Brazil’s friendly against Japan in Poland, Neymar showed no signs of jet lag as he danced around and through the defense to score a highlight-reel goal.

Quick Kicks

Could sleeping pills have been to blame for England’s World Cup qualifying draw vs. Poland? Rio Ferdinand isn’t buying it.

If you think Liverpool had a tough international break, they’ve got nothing on Real Madrid, who saw four players come away from international duty with knocks, including the team’s starting fullbacks.

  1. As internet memes go, this is no “binder full of women.”

So, injuries are piling up at Liverpool? How far off the radar is Marc Pelosi? How is he doing over there?

  2. I remember when he was 20. What a great player he was back then. It is just to bad that he had to spend the next 180 years playing in Brazil. I guess he is trying to score 100,000 goals for his short career!!!
