In the first game of the post-Pia Sundhage era, the U.S. Women’s National Team played to a 1-1 draw with Germany in Chicago at Toyota Park. The match pitted the two top ranked teams in the world, with the number one ranked Americans playing host to the number two ranked Germans, as the Americans continue their tribute tour after winning the Olympic gold medal over the summer.

Abby Wambach moved within 11 goals of all-time leading scorer Mia Hamm, as Wambach knocked in her 147th career goal. This despite playing in over 80 fewer games. The goal came early, as Alex Morgan set Wambach up for the goal in the 2nd minute of the match. The assist gave Morgan 16 on the year, which leads the team.

Germany did not go away quietly, though, as it did not take long for them to respond. Anja Mittag found herself on the receiving end of a Simone Laudehr pass, which ended up with Mittag calmly knocking it pass U.S. keeper Hope Solo for the equalizer.

From there, the match was as even as the score led on, as both teams had chances, but were never able to provide the game-winner. With the draw, the U.S. Women’s 14-game winning streak came to an end, but it did extend their unbeaten streak to 17.

The two will play again in Hartford, Connecticut on Tuesday night, as the Americans’ 2012 season approaches a close, with just three matches remaining on the year. Interim manager Jill Ellis, who coached the team on Saturday, will also be the coach for Tuesday night’s match.
