U-20 USMNT paired with Costa Rica, Haiti in 2013 CONCACAF Championship group

The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team have learned the road they will need to take to reach the 2013 World Cup.

CONCACAF announced Wednesday the results of the draw for the region’s 2013 Under-20 Championship, and the United States have been paired with Costa Rica and Haiti in Group A. The tournament will be held in Puebla, Mexico from February 18 through March 3 and the four semifinalists will all advance to next year’s Under-20 World Cup in Turkey.

U.S. head coach Tab Ramos will have to guide the Americans to a first- or second-place finish in group play and they will then need to beat a team from Group B in a single quarterfinals fixture to secure a berth to the World Cup. The U.S. first face Haiti on Feb. 19 before battling Costa Rica on Feb. 22.

What do you think of the group the U.S. was drawn in? Think they will reach the U-20 World Cup? Who do you see winning the whole U-20 CONCACAF Championship?

  1. The US has by far the toughest group. Both Haiti and Costa Rica were group winners in the preliminary stage.
Groups B and C are both incredibly easy. Panama (Group C) will be missing over half their team due to suspensions so there is only one decent team in either of these groups. The worst Group A team is roughly equivalent to the best team in either of these two groups.

  2. Failure to make the U-20 WC will no longer be tolerated.
Failure to advance through the qualification stage will result in castration.

  3. If the U.S. can take care of business and win their group, it appears they would have the easiest path imaginable to a semifinal appearance. That being said, having Costa Rica in their group makes things a bit trickier. On the flip side, Canada has by far the easiest group on paper, but has to be upset that they will have to face the U.S. or Costa Rica (theoretically) in the quarters.

    • I agree, but I will also add that Costa Rica will be playing the US on a two day rest vs four days for the US. Normally it is a huge advantage, but I suspect that Costa Rica won’t have to push too hard against Haiti.
