USA vs. Mexico: SBI Match Night Commentary

MEXICO CITY– The biggest rivalry in CONCACAF will be revived tonight at Estadio Azteca, when the U.S. Men’s National team takes the field to take on arch-rival Mexico.

The U.S. come in off a confidence-boosting 1-0 victory over Costa Rica last Friday, a win that pushed them to second place in the CONCACAF Hexagonal Round standings.

Mexico enters tonight’s match in much tougher shape, having settled for draws in their first two HEX qualifiers, including a 2-2 draw in Honduras that saw them squander a 2-0 lead.

A sold-out crowd is expected at the cavernous Estadio Azteca, with close to 100,000 expected to take in the action in a match locals are calling a must-win for ‘El Tri’ and suddenly under-fire head coach Jose Manuel “Chepo” De La Torre.

The U.S. team could be without centerback Clarence Goodson, who appears to be suffering from an undisclosed injury that could keep him out of tonight’s match. Sporting KC defender Matt Besler could be deputized in his place for a match-up against dangerous Mexican striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez.

SBI will be providing full coverage for the match so feel free to join us for some pre-game conversation as well as coverage throughout the match. You are welcome to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

  1. Joe says:

    USA! USA! USA!

  2. Goalscorer24 says:

Unbelievable the amount of injuries the US has had!

    • Lorenzo says:

Seems to happen a lot to us. Thankfully we have better depth then earlier years. Still we could get better (of course). Spain can drop a player like David Villa and still win the Euro.

We missed Holden, Jones, and a recovering Onyewu in the last World Cup. Lost Altidore and Cherundelo for the GC Finals. Every team has to deal with it, but the deeper the team, the better they can cope.

    • Dan says:

Isn’t that taking the players out of their “comfort zone” that they all whined about?

  3. b says:

Goodson is out. Besler will likely get the start.

  4. Old School says:

Get your urine bags and vomit cups ready Azetca. Winter is coming…

  5. eadc says:

I’d think Edu at centerback and put Beckerman at D-mid. Nothing against Besler’s game, but in this environment, I think you take Edu / Beckerman’s experience over any potential upside in having Besler at centerback with Omar in Azteca the first time together.

    • beachbum says:

agreed, but Coach seems like trial by fire baptisms. we’ll see

    • TomG says:

I can understand Goodson’s mobility might make him a bad matchup against Mexico, but how mobile is Besler? Can a SKC fan step up and let me know? I can’t judge a CBs mobility by only seeing him a few times per year. Would you consider Besler an extremely mobile CB? Is he fast?

      • beachbum says:

quick and smart, technically good…my 5 word analysis as a Galaxy fan

        • TomG says:

Thanks beachbum. Unfortunately that probably means as much as my analysis as a NYRB fan, LOL. CB is such a tough position to assess unless you watch them game in and game out, IMO.

  6. jones says:

It could be a nightmare tonight for whichever centerbacks end up playing. This is the kind of game where you want everybody healthy and want some experience in the back.

  7. Jermaine, Fabian, Steve, Timmy, Timmy, Edgar, Stu, Jose, Danny says:

    Miss me??????????

  8. Bac says:

2 more injuries & we can field a full squad

  9. MikeG says:

Would like to see the US run off the ball well tonight. By running well off the ball this will help in possession and take pressure off of the defense. Running off the ball will help in 1-2 touch passing too. 3-5 yards in any direction to get open. Getting open could be the cornerstone of the entire game for the US.

  10. Mexican bench-warmer (aka "Chicharito") says:

If its 0 – 0 at half time what would be your prediction for the final?

  11. Dos a Cero says:

The ghost of Charlie Davies former swagger haunts the Mexican dressing room at AZTECA

  12. Alex G says:

    Why is Goodson out?

    • Bac says:

Pelted in the ACL by urine bag, or blinded by laser pointer from the Mexican press rooftop

    • Neruda says:

Just heard that. What’s going on here. The Yanks are dropping like flies if true. I’d like to see Gonzo with Cameron at CB. But it could be Gonzo and Edu. Either way I’m ok given the circumstance.

It’s time to put the boys out there and start this thing.

  13. Old School says:

    Dos Santos is annoying looking.

    That’s all.

  14. Iggy says:

Is Klinsi playing games…where’s the lineup.

  15. RB says:

What’s going on? All reports said that LB Torres Nilo was out due to card accumulation…

  16. MikeG says:

    The U.S. MNT lineup for #USAvMEX: 1-Guzan; 20-Cameron, 3-Gonzalez, 14-Besler, 7-Beasley; 4-Bradley, 6-Edu; 19-Zusi, 8-Dempsey (c), 9-Gomez; 17-Altidore

    • MikeG says:

Welcome to the fire pit Besler. Good luck to you and the team.

      • MikeG says:

Fiscal could have taken Goodson spot, but coaches call

        • broadsthooligans says:

Besler seems to be preferred based on the fact that he was called in originally. Fiscal would presumably have been called in for depth, and versatility in case everyone else breaks down.

        • beachbum says:

or Cameron slid inside with OFiscal on the right

    • MikeG says:

Edu and Bradley as dual DM’s. I like this pairing.

    • MikeG says:

I think Zusi will be the first one substituted for..he needs to anticipate and think ahead a little faster. Gomez and Beasley on the left side. I think most our early attacks will be with Beasley and Gomez on the left. I hope Zusi proves me wrong. We’ll see.

  17. GOYA-GOYA says:

    4-0 Mexico

  18. Amru says:

I like the aggressive line up except for Zusi would have liked to see EJ or corona get the start

  19. Samjoe says:

Keep tight on that little transsexual, Dos Santos; he’s a fruitcake and a half.

  20. allouez86 says:

I would’ve liked to have seen Sacha starting in a familiar position than Zusi but oh well. Also, we have nothing to lose by having Besler in the back and if I were him I would be anxious but not nervous as we are definitely not expected to win so the worst that could happen is we meet most expectations and lose to El Tri at the Azteca.

  21. Samjoe says:

The Mexicans will be throwing everything but the kitchen sink the first 15 minutes: canned beans, bagged beans, black beans, etc. The U.S. has to weather the storm. The first 15 will be worse than some fat Mexicans farting in bar after drinking Tequila and about 5 burritos. If the U.S. withstands the first15 minutes, the Mexicans will be out of gas. HHAAAAA!!!!!

    • Lu says:

Hahaha I’m Mexican but I found this hilarious

    • Samjoe says:

Mexicans love gringos. Why else would they want to be like us. If they did not want to be like us, they would never try to steal our identities.

  22. beachbum says:

backline of the future with Fabian in there too maybe?

  23. beachbum says:

Besler to be matched up with Hernandez? or Gonzo? whoever it is should be something to watch. I’d guess Besler

    • TomG says:

I’d guess Besler Chicharito since I’d say he’s quicker than Gonzo?

      • beachbum says:

could be but I’m sure both will get their chances matched up on him as well, you know? set piece marking is another glimpse into the US thinking on who marks him

  24. Paul says:

    Wish we had boca…

  25. Vic says:

Guzan will need to come up big. Mexico will dominate but we will counterattack.

  26. Vic says:

Why are our skilled players always out or injured: Jones, Fabian Johnson, Williams, Donovan and Chandler. Are less skilled more athletic players seem to always be available.

  27. Skyman says:

I just want to see SOME offense from the US

    • TomG says:

My guess is bunker the first half with very little offense and try to open it up once we weather the initial assault.

  28. Todd says:

Univision just reported the following lineup and configuration

I have the screencap to prove it.

Is Mexico overconfident? or did Jurgen Klinsmann release a fake starting lineup to Univision?

  29. RB says:

I hope Beasler doesn’t make us wish Orozco Fiscal had been brought in, instead…

  30. SD says:

has besler played in any ccl matches? also was orozco named to the initial squad…i didn’t think so?

  31. Chupacabra says:

Where does the naco color guy on ESPN live? iI want to send him a big brown German Shepherd surprise.

  32. chris_thebassplayer says:

Well, for Besler this is about as difficult as it can be for a nats rookie. Mega ballsy move by JK…really borders on the absurd though, Chicharito’s movement is going to give Omar and Besler fits. Hopefully Cameron can slow down Guar and Edu can shadow Gio to minimize the service. Let’s go Boys!!

  33. kevin says:

Yikes! What a patchwork backline for the Tanks. I predict a Mexican goalfest. Mexico 3, USA 0.

  34. TomG says:

LOVE the ball movement so far! So PUMPED for this match!!

  35. KCHog says:

Watching the game with my 5 year old daughter. After a close up of Gio, she says, “Daddy, why is a girl on the black team”? Out of the mouths of babes….

  36. Vic says:

I posted last week that I was against Beasley at LB. I said he could be ok against Costa Rica at home however, Mexico is a different story. Thought Lichaj was a better option. Hoping I’m wrong.

  37. ChiTown says:

Who the hell at ESPN thought it was a good idea to have a pro-Mexico announcer on our English broadcast?

  38. TomG says:

Beasley looking completely lost so far.

    • Riggity says:

      That push was absolutely terrible

      • TomG says:

Doesn’t look like Jozy has nearly the legs he had on Friday. Deuce looks like he’s got great legs. Maybe the time off energized him. Herc, surprisingly, doesn’t seem to have his normal work rate.

        • Old School says:

This is unrelated and not bagging on Jozy but everyone talks about his physicality.

I’ve said for years, Jozy has small legs. His upper body is strong but he has fairly small legs for his stature. I think Jozy could be more powerful and even faster if he developed that part of his body.

  39. TomG says:

Deuce has looked phenomenal thus far. Winning balls and spraying the ball all over the place.

  40. TomG says:

Ref keeping with the CONCACAF policy of immediately whistling USA for a foul on every single free kick as soon as the ball is struck.

  41. ChiTown says:

Seriously, Taylor Twellman actually just insulted the Mexican announcer because he’s crossing the line so much.

This is horribly amateur from ESPN. Jesus.

    • Old School says:

It’s not a Mexican announcer, it’s Alejandro Moreno (a Venezuelan) who was NOTORIOUS for flopping.

He spoke the truth. Sometimes the truth hurts.

  42. Mikebsiu says:

This is ridiculous. Like two girls fighting. Just call the game fairly

  43. Old School says:

Gomez doing very little in the attack but yeoman’s work helping Beasley on defense.

  44. Ray tango says:

This pro Mexico announcer is awful. As if twellman wasn’t annoying enough.

  45. MikeG says:

improve movement off the ball and get the passing going. We are not looking that bad, but we can move off the ball better.

  46. TomG says:

Zavala WIDE open on that set piece. What is going on!

  47. ChiTown says:

Jozy is just jogging around like he’s just run a full 90.

  48. Riggity says:

Luckily they didnt score but camerons.marking on that set piece was flat out disappointing

  49. Old School says:

Hernandez has never scored against the United States?

  50. ChiTown says:

I am–for the first time ever–considering not watching a game until the end.

I feel completely betrayed by ESPN. Playing Mexico games is one thing–but bringing a pro-Mexico announcer into the booth for the American broadcast after weeks of playing up the pro-America, anti-Mexico angle of this rivalry is a complete slap in our face as American fans.

    • Old School says:

Something to keep in mind (not that I’m arguing against your point), Alejandro Moreno is the new color commentator for ESPN’s coverage of Liga MX.

I wasn’t the least surprised when they, awkwardly, added him to the line up of announcers for tonight’s match.

      • ChiTown says:

He needs to get off my TV.

      • dave says:

Agreed – a complete betrayal by ESPN. Someone has got to shut that little bitter bitch up. I doubt there’s a pro-american announcer on the espn desportes broadcast

    • Riggity says:

Somehow I think ESPN will survive without you watching the whole thing, turn down the volume if you have to, it makes no sense to punish yourself and not supportnyour team because of some guy in the booth

  51. Ray tango says:

Why does beastly boot that long ?

  52. MemRook says:

Beasley is having a SHOCKER. As much as it pains me to say it. He’s playing awful.

  53. Juan says:

Zusi is killing us….Get Johnson in there

    • Old School says:

Johnson is garbage on the wing.

I’d much favor pushing Beasley (who’s on a yellow card) up to wing and bouncing Gomez over to the opposite wing.

Drop Edu to LB and bring in Beckerman to the midfield.

  54. TomG says:

We are so lucky not to be down 2-nil

  55. TomG says:

    NIce win by Zusi

  56. Mikebsiu says:

Boom!! He heard what u said.

  57. Cody says:

    Glad it’s still 0-0

  58. TomG says:

I think Jozy’s gassed already. He had so much energy on Friday, but none tonight.

  59. Mikebsiu says:

Lol, I was expecting John sutcliffe to speak with an English accent.

  60. ChiTown says:

What the hell do we need to do to get a foul called?

    Seriously. This is atrocious.

  61. TomG says:

I think we may have weathered the initial storm. We’re starting to knock the ball around consistently for the first time since the opening minutes.

  62. Vic says:

Instead of passing back USA players should try to take players on in the flanks and earn a corner kick. With all our height that may be our best bet to score.

  63. TomG says:

    Sooo close by MB!

  64. Riggity says:

Luckily Jozy was jogging all match to be able to deliver that pass to Bradley…get off the guys back please, like it or not he’s the best we have right now

  65. chris_thebassplayer says:

Mo needs to get more involved on D…MB is thankfully doing the bulk of the deep distribution, but he is practically doing the defensive work for Mo also…Mo needs to find the game.

  66. TomG says:

Jozy passing too much. Force yourself on the game, Jozy!

  67. KC says:

Does Moreno really need to be on this broadcast? WTF ESPN?

  68. Mikebsiu says:

Guzan is a polish beast. Didn’t even feel that

  69. Scott says:

Nice play from Guzan. That guy is a rock.

  70. Old School says:

50/50 ball and Guzan shows the fortitude to attack the ball (and barely make contact with the Mexican attacker).

Of course, the Mexican attacker has stepped on a landmine. A lot of Mexican landmines on the pitch.

  71. ChiTown says:

    Use your left foot!

  72. ChiTown says:

    That was great.

Mexican guy gets hit in the head area and holds his groin.

  73. Scott says:

    come demps cross the ball

  74. Riggity says:

Lets put this in for a goal.right before half

  75. ChiTown says:

Elbow into the back of the head isn’t a yellow with the way you’ve been handing out yellows like pez?

    • Riggity says:

Lol i was just about to write that the red musta bought his yellows at costco cuz he has been handing them out like candy to us

  76. Scott says:

where did Jurgen get that shirt from, the 70’s?

  77. Brant says:

    konichiwa pipples!

anyone besides me think that about 4 of the Mexican players should just go on and put on their wrestling masks, since they’re already playing like a bunch of thug heels anyway?

  78. MikeG says:

Time for a Jozy Altidore goal

  79. Riggity says:

    Lol nice keeping by Ochoa

  80. ChiTown says:

Uh, 3 minutes of extra time and it’s blown dead at 47? Not that I’m complaining, but don’t they know how to count?

  81. Old School says:

    0-0 boys.

Some definitely concerns but it’s hard to be unhappy with being even at the break.

  82. Riggity says:

    The beans are a boo’n!!!!

  83. ChiTown says:

    Woooo zeros!

  84. PD says:

nervy first half for USA, but very happy we’re 0-0.

    – Beasley being tested but managing to hold his own.
    – I have to say I’m rather unimpressed by Cameron’s forward runs.
    – Deuce and Jozy have had a few moments, but they need to do more with them if they get some chances going forward.
    – Time to sub Zusi?

    • Marcus says:

Maybe I’m in the minority, but I think Zuzi is having a pretty decent game on the ball. However, his complete lack of physical speed is always a drawback…

  85. David M says:

So far so good. Too many passes back towards the US goal — not good. We’re not Barca after all. I’d like to see the US go forward more. I think Mexican defense is quite suspect, especially in the middle.

  86. ChiTown says:

I have an awful feeling about the second half.

I am still expecting the loss and I don’t want to get my hopes up.

  87. Old School says:

Across CONCACAF, it results in all matches stay the same: MEXICO DEAD LAST IN THE HEX.

  88. twewlife says:

    1. I really do appreciate the effort, but Beasley is not a left back. Gotta think a sub is in order for him.

    2. Edu came on strong in the last fifteen minutes. Before the thirty minute mark, I don’t think he played one positive ball.

    3. I want to lick MB90’s head.

  89. Judging Amy says:

I thought the US looked very good all things considered. Mex had virtually no clear chances while we created some good opportunities. Gotta think Mex comes out full force in the second half.

    • Riggity says:

Amy, I don’t mean to judge…pun intended, but they had a wide open player for a header a the back post on a set piece tha they headed right to Guzan and Chicharito had a point blank header on a cross from the left just outside the 6 that went over the bar. But I do agree that we have been solid for the circumstances and that the Mexican’s are going to throw everything the have a us in tr next 15 minutes. HERE WE GO

  90. Vic says:

Instead of passing back USA players should try to take players on in the flanks and earn a corner kick. With all our height that may be our best bet to score

  91. Chupacabra says:

Is Jorge Ramos a famous Mexican comedian? Everything he says is hilarious.

  92. biff says:

US in the catbird seat–0-0 at half-time and now Mexico nervous. But Klinsmann will need to adjust. Beasley is doing a decent job in an unfamiliar position against exceptional attacking talent, but not sure Klinsmann should have pressed his luck bith Beez at LB for a second game. Mexico was ready for him. Agree with you, Old School, first sub should see Beasely moved up to left wing.

I got a good feeling about this game, guys. I think we might be able to take a point-maybe even three.

    • Dennis says:

Agree, Beasley has the speed and skill needed, but he is not naturally a defender. The problems he has had are mostly due to getting too far forward and not retreating soon enough.

  93. Yevgeniy says:

Is this the first time ever tht ll 11 starters in qualifier started their career in MLS?

  94. ChiTown says:

I already have a bad fever and possibly the flu–this is not helping my condition.

So stressed. Can I fast forward life to the 90 minute mark?

  95. Riggity says:

    Dam Zusi is trash

  96. Old School says:

    Looks like we’re shaped in a 4-4-2

  97. wyofan says:

the color commentators are killing me. this is unbearable.

  98. TomG says:

Two good plays by Beasley in a row

  99. Old School says:

Thank you for bailing out Edu (someone I continue to say has the worst distribution of any of our midfielders)!

  100. Old School says:

Gomez/Jozy getting f–king mugged and no foul.

    • ChiTown says:

Luche Libre guys keep coming on the field disguised as Mexican players. Referee was honestly confused what “sport” he was working on.

  101. chris_thebassplayer says:

Argh, Mo is a liability with the ball, some things don’t change.

  102. MLSsnob says:

This third commentator is really starting to piss me off.

  103. Dave says:

Moreno needs to shut his mouth

  104. TomG says:

    OG!! Great play.

  105. Vic says:

    Good sub Johnson for Altidore.

  106. Riggity says:

You guys heard it on espn first, Moreno isn’t even comfortable marking Aquino and he’s in the booth

  107. Mikebsiu says:

    Woah altidore was playing!!!??!

  108. Judging Amy says:

Bease has done well but he looks a bit beat up. Jozy had some good moments but too many poor touches. Gomez not showing too well IMO. He may need to come off next.

  109. Old School says:

Not surprised Jozy is coming off.

Jozy was pouting and throwing around his arms up top. Not saying service has been there or he doesn’t have a reason to gripe but it’s the fact that he’s griping, while Gomez is working his tail off that Jozy is off.

Jozy is a stud but his maturity has never developed.

    • ChiTown says:

Yeah, he was not good today.

    • Judging Amy says:

I don’t think Gomez is showing very well. I think Jozy was taken off for his poor touch/inability to hold up well enough and EJ’s mobility. Btw Besler and Gomez are looking pretty good under the circumstances.

Why did they add a Mexican commentator for this broadcast? Dude is awful.

      • Old School says:

I’m not saying Gomez is showing well. Frankly, all forwards have been invisible for a number of reasons.

…but Gomez has made countless runs back to support Beasley.

Jozy, on the other hand, wore himself out by throwing his arms around complaining.

        • Judging Amy says:

Well, their roles are different. Altidore was tasked with holding up play centrally and pressuring their D. Gomez is an option out on the wings and tracking back to help defend Mex’s quick wingers.

But as I said I think it was a good sub.

      • Judging Amy says:

And yes, I know it’s Ale Moreno and that he’s not really Mexican.

      • Old School says:

A lot of people incorrectly calling the other color commentator a “Mexican” announcer. It’s Ajeandro Moreno (Venezuelan), formerly of MLS.

  110. USAmr says:

Seriously Klinsman? I hope this works out.

  111. Old School says:

No card for Acquino yet? Wow.

I’ve lost count of how many times he’s fouled Beasley.

  112. TomG says:

    OG again!

  113. ChiTown says:

This was a very bad game for Jozy. He was involved in a few passing sequences, but he otherwise was pouting and jogging around.

Lazy Jozy returned tonight. Hopefully Johnson goes hard.

    • MJC-DC says:

He was relatively invisible, but he was involved in some of our better forays forward (that’s how limited they were that a player can simultaneously be involved in those and then disappear for large stretches). The letdown for me was his target play, he didn’t win to many balls that were played long. All in all this is a tough game to draw conclusions on any of our FWDs, the defense is a whole other story though.

  114. TomG says:

Herc looks exhausted. He’s a guy that I’ve never seen tired before, but he’s been completely ineffective tonight. Bring on Shea, please.

    • Riggity says:

Shea for Zusi please, Herc at least plays at Azteca often

      • TomG says:

Normally I’d agree, but at least I’ve seen Zusi make a few nice plays. I haven’t seen Herc do a single thing tonight except turn the ball over an pull off of his runs. It’s been a shockingly unHerclike performance from him IMO.

  115. ChiTown says:

I’m guessing that the things Klinsmann has to say to Jozy are not going to be pleasant. Biggest game of the year and you’re throwing a hissy fit and not making runs.

  116. Riggity says:

Seriously now, sub Zusi for Shea, like right now

  117. TomG says:

OG is a golden god tonight.

  118. Old School says:

Besler and Gonzalez not through the fire just yet but they’re growing up before our eyes.

  119. ChiTown says:

    Ugh, furious!

How many fast breaks are they going to get from hacking down a US player?!?!?!?!

  120. TomG says:

How the heck does Mo manage to get himself offside there?

  121. MemRook says:

Beasley showing better this half. Much better. Thank goodness.

  122. Riggity says:

Man, SO FAR, Omar has been legit…and after that corner I need to go change my britches…

  123. PD says:

9 corners. how many times are you gonna play with fire?

20 minutes to go gang, stay focused!

  124. Riggity says:

Brad Davis? …I’ll wait to say what I think about that…

  125. PD says:

Davis for Gomez? why the h3ll is Zusi still out there?

  126. Judging Amy says:

Herc had to come off. Great effort as always but not too effective.

  127. Scott says:

Gotta assume Gomez was winded after running all night

  128. Riggity says:

    Sweet child of mine…

  129. TomG says:

    ZUSI!!! What a backtrack!

  130. Old School says:

Zusi with his pants on fire saving the day.

  131. PD says:

OK, so that’s why Zusi is still in… great defensive run.

  132. Old School says:

Zusi just displayed why he’s on the pitch and someone as talented as Jozy is, resides on the bench.

  133. Riggity says:

…ya just knew that cross was gonna be abysmal when EJ got to the touchline

  134. TomG says:

God, EJ. You’ve got a perfect opportunity for a driven cross and you pop a lollipop over the moon. WTF

  135. Vic says:

    All US born players tonight.

  136. ChiTown says:

studs right down Beasley’s leg and no call

How does Mexico not have a yellow? Criminal.

  137. Riggity says:

Why does brad Davis look like he has been playing the whole game? He was just subbed in he should be pressing on d much harder

  138. TomG says:

STFU Mexico. He got the ball.

  139. Old School says:

    Another Mexican landmine.

  140. Riggity says:

What the heck was Edu doing? That wasn’t even close

  141. RK says:

    Edu got away with that.

  142. PD says:

    bullet = dodged

  143. ChiTown says:

Actually, it looks like Edu gets the ball perfectly through the legs.

    He also crushes Chicarito afterward.

  144. RK says:

Gonna be a miracle to come out 0-0.

  145. Riggity says:

    15 more minutes!!

  146. Old School says:

You may not have gotten a penalty/foul call. Welcome to our 90 minute experience every match in CONCACAF.

    Jog it off.

    Love, USA

  147. Riggity says:

Really nice job there Brad Davis, really nice…

  148. TomG says:

    Davis looks clueless.

  149. Judging Amy says:

Whoa, Shea in instead of a defender? Klins is going for the throat! I like it.

  150. Riggity says:

SEE EVERYONE THEY DO GO OVER TACTICS, right before they sub you in…

  151. Riggity says:

Tael man with a shot on GIO lol

  152. ChiTown says:

    Twellman–shut up.

Gio could torch us at any second.

  153. TomG says:

Davis again late to his man.

  154. Riggity says:

HERE WE GO, this is where we do it

  155. Old School says:

longest 4 minutes of of the 2013 calendar year, so far.

  156. Riggity says:

And now I need another pair of underpants…

  157. Riggity says:

Can’t wait to hear that there are 15 minutes of stoppage time left…

  158. TomG says:

Mo and MB teaming up to shut down the middle there.

  159. Old School says:

Again, if results stay the same in all matches: MEXICO DEAD LAST IN CONCACAF QUALIFYING.

  160. Riggity says:

Brad Davis with another steller play

  161. Judging Amy says:

    dumb by brad davis.

  162. TomG says:

Davis does not belong on the field.

  163. Old School says:

Guzan punching like a boss. Such confidence.

  164. TomG says:

  165. Old School says:

Possible hand/arm ball in the box.

Again, Mexico…how does it feel to not get all of the calls?

    • TomG says:

Let’s be honest. For the first time I can ever remember. We absolutely got the benefit of the calls. In fact, if I were a Mexican fan I’d feel completely robbed. Terrible officiating.

      • Old School says:

We sure did and I feel zero sympathy of a nation and region that almost always benefits at our expense.

  166. Judging Amy says:

Wipe that dirt off your shoulder JK. Mex players harassing the ref after the game like scumbags stay classy.

  167. ChiTown says:

  168. A.S. says:

    We win 0-0!

  169. MemRook says:

    USA WINS 0-0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  170. Old School says:

Mexican coach/players showing the their class.

Careful not to step on any landmines as you walk of the pitch, Mexico.

  171. MikeG says:

Neighbors are slamming doors…complaining…LOL….I’m sure Mexico will compain to FIFA

  172. TomG says:

Great result. Fantastic luck, perhaps, but a gritty performance. The biggest thing is that CB may suddenly have gone from a barren desert to a position of depth.

    • Judging Amy says:

Yes. What a job by Beastler and Gonzo. Great result.

      • TomG says:

And hopefully, we’ll never see the 3 dm triangle again. That may be the other big revelation. 2 games in a row with just MB and a CM partner working together.

      • TomG says:

I’m particularly impressed by OG, who I always wondered if he was quick enough to handle the speed of world class forwards.

        • chris says:

Completely agree. As a galaxy supporter ive always been a OG fan but was unsure how he would do with the speed at the national team level. I couldnt be happier with his performance

  173. ChiTown says:

  174. MemRook says:

    USA, zero shots on goal?

  175. Riggity says:

Man I cannot wait to read Mexico’s version of Brian Strauss’ article, Twellman to Moreno, “Any questions Alejandro?”

If anything will bring a team together and validate the manager it’s getting a result in a place you have only gotten one in history. I need some tums

  176. Plex says:

It appears El Tri forgot to eat their tainted meat.

  177. DC Josh says:

  178. MemRook says:

    MOTM? Gonzalez? Guzan? Belser?

    My vote is Gonzalez!

  179. Todd says:

I’m happy for the points but I don’t think anyone out there was slower than Clint Dempsey tonight. He looked like he was playing in an iron lung!

The back four held up. Beasley for President!

I still think Edu has to be replaced by someone who can distribute the ball and maintain possession. Because the US had to play him, the US was forced to play a VERY defensive-minded game. I think we didn’t manage a shot on goal the entire game…

    • TomG says:

Could not possibly disagree more. I thought he was the quickest guy on the field for USA.

    • the original jb says:

Edu was outstanding. He was everywhere all game long. Bradley was most of game as well but faded badly late. Was proud of Beasley, they picked on him early and often, and he was beaten, but he fought back, settled in, made some nice recoveries, and battled to the end.

      • Todd says:

        I largely agrea.

one area where I think Bradley can improve though is knowing when to not chase. He’s like a dog chasing a rabbit out there sometimes. You’ll see 2 american players close someone down (bradley usually is one of them) and the guy easily dumps the ball off to Bradley’s man. Then there’s “The Chase” where Bradley gets goal-side again and all the American fans call him awesome.

I’ll agree that his work rate and first touch are both awesome. But his decision making and communication on the field still needs improvement. Since American soccer fans splooge over Bradley because he’s our most complete player I hope Klinsmann is able to tell him these things…

  180. RB says:

So Klinsmann still has never lost to Mexico.

  181. beachbum says:

best tactical/strategical game yet from Coach and staff imo, and well executed.

Besler Gonzo dominated, and Guzan = STUD

no PK call is true, it was a PK

    MB was excellent all night

    • MJC-DC says:

Are you sure that was just tactics? Or were we just unable to generate any meaningful offense despite some possession. Still gotta love the gritty defensive effort, CBs were sublime.

  182. Steevens says:

Extreme lack of class from the Mexican players, and coaches attacking the ref after the game.

  183. Bac says:

(or maybe our envelope was finally fat…like Arab oil fat)

  184. Chupacabra says:

The ESPN Deportes crew look like their favorite pet squirrel died. And one of them secretly ate it.

  185. beachbum says:

    full moon :)

  186. beachbum says:

it was another gritty result, back to back responses weith good ole american grit…nice :)

  187. cps says:

So do we, uh, stick with Guzan? Just putting it out there.

    • Old School says:

It’s a good problem to have.

    • Bac says:

The dude is money.. and he’s been ON all year at Villa
Too bad all of our back ups arent like him…

    • Brett says:

The GK and two center backs work as one position. Guzan, Gonzalez, and Besler is the #1 trio as of tonight. Sorry Timmy.

      • chris says:

while i agree guzan is a stud, have you forgot how many times timmy’s bailed us out? Just think about last time we were in Azteca, Timmy completely saved us to win that game. Timmy still is no 1 but couldnt be happier to have guzan as a number 2

  188. Brett says:

Not one serious threat on goal all game. Nothing to be proud of here except MAJOR hats off to Brad Guzan, Omar Gonzalez, and Matt Besler for coming together and gelling. The flanks are still better with Chandler and Johnson though.

Edu – Horrible. Zusi – In the right places but no creativity. Dempsey – Looked tired and his one shot was horrible.. Jozy – Did he even play? Gomez – I remember him, but no threatening moves. Subs – Yawn.

Bradley – Okay, but he’s our best attacking and defensive midfielder so whatever he does the other part suffers.

Jurgen. I don’t care what you have to do, but you do it. You get on your knees and you get Landon Donovan back. He would have sliced Meza to pieces tonight.

In any case, I will never spit at a road point in the Hex, let alone vs Mexico away. Feeling much better about qualifying now that two of our 3 toughest away games are down and we managed a point out of the pair.

    • MA1 Rodriguez says:

Jozy did createdsome chances, especially the one for Bradley, but one created for Jozy.

  189. Alex G says:

Fuc)(( Mexico, where´s the greatest team?, giants?, come on!! USA USA USA

  190. cps says:

Tough luck for Chicharito (“little penis”) Hernandez tonight. I feel really bad that he’s never scored against the USMNT.

  191. Judging Amy says:

Andres Guardado and Gio Dos Santos have the same haircuts little girls get at Supercuts.

  192. quitetheschemer says:

Guzan is in such great form… Makes one wonder if Howard will have to earn his spot back.

  193. Flagermunsen. says:

Biggest story of the night: Mex-USA lead on sports centre. England 2nd. Wow. Soccer taking more than just a token spot on SC.

  194. MA1 Rodriguez says:

First-time ever, the ref didn’t help mex…haha..yes…we were lucky. Last time, Davies scored a legit and mex should had three redcards. KARMA.

We found our pair next game …Gonzo and Besler!

Davis isn’t USNT-type player, Davis was worthless and put us in trouble.
And Dempsey was terrible just for this game.

  195. chris_thebassplayer says:

Huge game from MB…Omar and Besler were freaking solid…savvy defending from both. Midfield D was very organized and compact in the middle…kept a lot of heat off the back line. Mexico had no combo play up the middle. Great shape on D. Unbelievable that Mexico didn’t get that PK call in Azteca. Awesome road point…

  196. Pearson says:

There is a quality gap. Mexico is better at soccer. US has point, both will go to World Cup. Biggest losser today is Honduras who have a good team but few points.

  197. MA1 Rodriguez says:

Actually Guzan had really one great saved, so the keepers wasn’t MVP but Besler and Gonzalez.

    • chris says:

Agree, but guzan did have a great game. Did everything he needed today and looked confident in doing so. OG on another level tonight, Besler great tonight.

  198. Mike Lamb says:

Re: Jozy, I guess I saw something different than everyone else up thread, because it sure seemed like the only time we generated any offense was playing through Jozy’s feet.

    • MJC-DC says:

Agreed. That said the amount of times we actually generated a threat would be easy to count on one hand. In the long run that will matter, in this moment it matters little to me.

      • Increase says:

Agreed, other than that corner kick. The two “chances” were passes from Jozy to someone else. Dempsey wasted his. Mike just didn’t quite get there quick enough.

  199. Natsalways says:

Sports enter announcers are hilariously bad. They know absolutely nothing about soccer. Thanks for broadcasting the game, now get me someone who knows what they are talking about.

  200. PD says:

I said it on another post, we were underdogs tonite and played with grit and smarts. It was an incredibly composed and quite mature performance on the part of the team. Managed the match and neutralized their opponent very well (with a bit of luck on thier side admittedly).

Proud to be a USA fan, feel for all Mexican team fans tonite b/c I know what it’s like to to have my team get screwed by the ref and to see that final ball go lacking.

But I gotta say it’s soooooo nice to not be that guy tonite!

Guzan, Gonzalez, Besler and Beasely were incredible. Cameron was the shakiest of the back bunch and he was still very effective.

    Bradley was a boss.

Edu was nearly as solid, like Jones the other night he was fortunate that his one major mental lapse didn’t end up with a PK and card.

Zusi made up for his lack of offensive influence with that 40 yard run back to help defend. Just amazing.

Davis seemed out of his depth.

Altidore couldn’t shake that near early goal, lost his head and never recovered. Shame.

Dempsey seemed to either be neutralized, winded or just disappeared as he sometimes does.
Gomez was pretty neutralized as well.

EJ and Shea did well to make some probing runs, but in the end neither really did much more than keep Mexico honest in their end.

    Fantastic result.

  201. Maykol says:

lol wheres that salty guy from last time?

  202. pjsmoov says:

Are we no longer intimidated at Azteca?

  203. somedude says:

Can Chicharito score against New Zealand?

  204. Pete says:

I think its ridiculous to criticize Jozy and not Dempsey. After watching every game in the Klinsman era it is quite apparent that Jozy sole purpose is to hold the ball up and wait for runners, and the thing is Dempsey is not a runner and Zusi, and Herc are so spread its hard for them to link play. I understand his frustration, he is scoring goals in Europe at a top 6 league, but he really to be quite honest is not given the freedom to run at people which is his most dangerous assest for us. He is big and strong but the dude is skilled. I think if he asked Jozy to attack I think we would score goals because any rebound or pass back, Dempsey is a poacher.
