USMNT slips to 29th in latest FIFA World Rankings

USA Starting 11

The U.S. Men’s National Team didn’t play any games in April, which might be why the team managed to slip a place in the latest FIFA World Rankings.

The U.S. dropped one spot to No. 29, a dip precipitated by a three-spot climb from Nigeria, which was still receiving a boost from its African Cup of Nations triumph earlier in the year.

There was little activity in the rankings, with the top 13 remaining the same. Mexico did drop two spots to 16 after ‘El Tri’s’ scoreless draw vs. Peru last month.

What do you think of the last rankings?

      Yawn x 2.

      • Riggity says:

Was there even a FIFA sanctioned international fixture date last month? If not, what the heck is the point of updating the rankings when national teams aren’t allowed to call up their best players?

  2. THomas says:

Anything less than a World Cup title would be insulting to those uniforms.

  3. William the Terror says:

We’re lulling the rest of the world into a false sense of security before we unleash the fury in 2014.

“which might be why the team managed to slip a place in the latest FIFA World Rankings.”

Might? Is. You know how the rankings formula works, so why suggest there’s other reasons we could have slipped.

Chill dude, people on here are way too critical of Ives. He does a really good job for us US fans of putting all the info we need to know in one site (National Team, MLS, Europe), he also has an awesome podcast.

Ohhh chitown. You and your angst.

    • Kevin_H says:

To be fair, shouldn’t the explanation be that other teams gained points? Or that the weights of points from previous games changed because another month has passed, which favored some teams over others? It’s not QUITE as simple as the US didn’t play any games.

Ives, this site is awesome. Don’t worry about nitpicking like the above comment.

      • Ives Galarcep says:

Thanks. Never get too upset about random comments, but some folks have a track record of negative comments in general. Something that doesn’t do much to foster a healthy environment for conversation.

    • Ives Galarcep says:

Some people should remember commenting is a privilege, not a right. Someone’s about to be reminded of that.

The USNT being unactive does worries a bit.

  6. QuakerOtis says:

Don’t worry. We’ll jump up ten spots once the sponsors realize we’ve qualified.

  7. JC says:

Greece being as high as 13 is almost as ridiculous as Brazil being at 19. At least the Brazil ranking can be explained no WCQs.

    • Falls City Outlaw says:

Greece had a decent-ish Euro. But yes, I find it ridiculous how highly ranked teams can be who didn’t even play in the last World Cup. But, a good June/good Gold Gup will be just the shot of deer antler spray that our team needs.

  8. RK says:

    I blame Landon for this.

  9. JC says:

The next release date is June 6th. I wonder how high we’ll jump after we beat Belgium and Germany?

  10. Centerback says:

Ditto to the above comments. Didn’t we just get an update a mere month or two ago for the USMNT?
