Peter Vermes has played a major role in Sporting Kansas City’s turnaround from bottom-half club to Eastern Conference power in recent years, and he has been rewarded with a lengthy contract extension.
Sporting Kansas City is set to announce a contract extension for Vermes that will lock the 46-year old down as the club’s head coach and technical director through 2017.
“It really was a no-brainer,” SKC CEO Robb Heineman told The Kansas City Star. “The vision that we set forth with Peter seven years ago was very long term, and we’re been pleased with the progress he’s made toward the vision we all mutually laid out.”
After a lengthy career as one of the top defenders in Major League Soccer, Vermes became SKC’s technical director in 2006. He was named the club’s interim head coach in August 2009 and became the permanent head coach at the end of that season.
In his three full seasons as head coach, Vermes has led SKC to back-to-back Eastern Conference regular season titles and the 2012 U.S. Open Cup. Vermes’s squad is currently at the top of the Eastern Conference again this season with a 10-5-6 record.
