Despite a nervy ending, Everton continued their unbeaten run to the start of the Premier League season, with Tim Howard once again playing a part in the victory.

In the 37th minute of Everton’s 3-2 victory against Newcastle United at Goodison Park on Monday evening, goalkeeper Tim Howard launched a clearance from inside his own box towards his Everton teammate Romelu Lukaku.

The long pass took two bounces as both Newcastle defender Fabricio Coloccini and goalkeeper Tim Krul were unable to properly handle the danger, allowing for Lukaku to run onto the ball, evade the slide of Coloccini, and finish into an empty net.

With the assist, Howard joins his U.S. Men’s National Team teammate Brad Guzan on the assist charts, with Guzan recording one assist this weekend as well.

Lukaku’s goal was the second of the day for the Belgian international as he also scored in the fifth minute and set up Ross Barkley in the 25th minute, as Roberto Martinez’s side went into the halftime break up 3-0.

Newcastle showed their spirit with two goals in the second half, the first a wicked, bending strike by Yohan Cabaye in the 51st minute and the second a close range finish from Loic Remy in the 89th minute. However, the second goal likely came two little too late as Newcastle were unable to complete the comeback, despite a late chance by Remy that whizzed over the crossbar.

The third consecutive win for Everton moves them up to fourth in the Premier League standings, with 12 points from six games (three wins and three draws). Newcastle meanwhile drop to 16th place in the standings with seven points in six matches after their second defeat in a row.

  1. Dan M says:

Lukaku might win the Golden Ball, Boot, or at least Shin Guards at the WCUP, you heard it here first. He has skills that will translate on the world stage in Brazil.

    • Kingsly Alexander - Man Rey - Plotinus - Sankt Pauli! says:

Besides AJ, our goalkeepers produced the most this weekend

    • Yusef says:

I agree regarding his skill and ability, but I don’t think he’s actually cracked the starting XI for Belgium in their qualifiers. The dude just scores goals. Not sure why Chelsea keeps letting him do it for other clubs.

  2. john says:

Didn’t Timmy actually score a GOAL a couple of years ago on a long punt or clearance?

    • 20 says:

yea he did, it was on a windy day against Bolton. He cleared the ball from his own box and the wind took it over the keeper’s head.

      • Umlaut says:

Worth noting how classy he was afterwards, didn’t celebrate at all and in the presser he noted how unlucky it was for the opposing keeper, nothing but respect, etc. etc. It was pretty cool.

  3. Scott says:

Guzan does it 1st and Howard gets the article? Couldn’t have done an article about the both of them, and not just a by the way mention for Guzan?

  4. sly says:

Mou is either playing the deepest game ever or sucks. Sending a forward to a team that this was all they needed and a winger to liverpool when thats all thjey needed seems strange. Maynbe hes hjoping everton and liverpool ravage the rest of the league.

  5. Rabbit says:

The link just takes me to an NBC sports home screen. Yesterday the link to Aron Johannson’s goal was dead.

It’s frustrating to spend time clicking on pages and waiting on them to load, only to not get the desired result.

  6. Jay Bonds says:

Lukaku is the striker Americans wish Altidore was. Both Benteke and Lukaku products of the Belgian League. I wonder what that says of the league.

    • Ryan in NYC by way of NC says:

Somehow I don’t think Jozy would’ve gotten that same cutback ball in that Lukaku did. Call me crazy.

      • Increase says:

The one area that Lukaku and Benteke both do far better than Jozy in is when the ball is in the air. Jozy just doesn’t like going up for headers.

Everywhere else, I’m not sure but thats a big area to be deficient in. Crouch has made a whole career out of it.

        • Bata says:

Did you watch Sunderland v Liverpool this weekend? Jozy was dominant on long balls, including with his head.

          • Matt C says:

Agrreance. the commentators noted Jozy winning headers on a number of occasions.

            • Jay Bonds says:

Bata and Matt C so far how many goals has Jozy scored with those long balls? How many goals so far this EPL season?

  7. Adrian says:

Juan Mata is not breaking the first XI at Chelsea. Lukaku has too good of a line up ahead of him. Maybe after the WC.

  8. Frank says:

Pun intended?: “two little too late”

  9. Jacknut says:

Is it just me or does Howard get beaten on those long distance shots more often than he should?
