Soccer Tuesday: Your Running Commentary

Barcelona look to continue their unbeaten run to the start of the 2013/2014 season in all competitions with a match at home against Real Sociedad, one of a number of matches across Europe on Tuesday.

Under Gerardo Martino, the side is playing more direct, as shown by the fact that they lost the possession battle in last Saturday’s 4-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano for the first time in more than 300 matches. A win against Sociedad would make it six straight wins in La Liga, which is one away from the club record to start a season.

Also in action on Tuesday, Borussia Dortmund takes on 1860 Munich in the German Cup, Atletico Madrid host Osasuna in La Liga, and both Chelsea and Manchester City are in action in the Capital One Cup in England.

In the evening, Copa MX and CONCACAF Champions League take center stage, with Morelia hosting Chivas in the former and the Montreal Impact welcoming Heredia to Stade Saputo in the latter.

  1. Dainja says:

Hoping Bobby “Shows” Wood today in a cameo appearance off the bench!

  2. Family Guy says:

Im getting into sports betting. Dear God I hope my bets come through

  3. Family Guy says:

hoping Jozy gets a hat trick tonight

  4. Francois says:

    Anybody with the Sunderland feed?

  5. SubwayJared says:

    Jozy forced a save early.

And then got all the way to the end line… and there was nobody to cross it to. Against Petersborough. 3rd division.

Jozy’s been their best player by far.

  6. Kodi says:

I keep having rights issues trying to listen to games. BBC 5 Live audio has issues online and on the Tunein Radio app. Trying to listen to Chelsea-Swindon or Sunderland-Petersborough.

  7. SubwayJared says:

Jozy with a smooth flick on, but Giacc misses a simple shot.

  8. SubwayJared says:

Adam Johnson just crushed a cross in at Jozy who probably should have done better–hits it over from 6. In his defense… that was an awful cross. Johnson just put his laces through it and expecting someone to control that was ridiculous.

  9. SubwayJared says:

Giaccherini puts Sunderland up 1-0 with a half volley off the cross from Cattermole.

  10. petedx says:

I wish there was some NFL redzone like channel for these english league and FA cup match days. It would be much better to watch all the interesting plays and developments than Chelsea putting 6 past Swindon Town.

    • SubwayJared says:

Has to be a market for something like that… something that Americans would pay for. An online service like ESPN3.

    • John says:

Sky kind of has a poor version of it but its just guys reporting on what’s happening. There no video of the goals or anything.

    • Michael says:

Just what I was thinking! And posting!
Why doesn’t every league put together some package that you can buy from them? I really hate that I can’t get Bundesliga!! Would overpay to have it. There is money to be made there.

    • Kodi says:

talk sport uk has an audio version going on right now.

  11. Michael says:

I’m so tired of not being able to watch games that I would pay money for. It seems like these days if you are willing to pay for a service you can get it. But not with sports. Stupid.

  12. SubwayJared says:

Game is kind of back and forth right now. Petersborough kind of threatening on a chance here and there, but otherwise sloppy from both teams.

Looks like Sunderland are playing something of a 4-3-3… probably because of the lack of quality of the opponent. Finishing has been sub-par to say the least. Sunderland should be up 3 or 4 by now.

  13. SubwayJared says:

Jozy clears a corner on the defensive end and then gets the ball back 25 yards out… blasts it off the bottom of the post. So close!

  14. SubwayJared says:

Half time, 1-0 to Sunderland. Giaccherini the goalscorer. Jozy’s been really active and gotten himself into some quality spots. So unlucky to not have at least 1 so far.

I like him to grab 1 in the second half.

  15. SubwayJared says:

And we’re off! Second half begins.

  16. SubwayJared says:

Jozy drives into dangerous area of the 18, but last ditch tackle by Zakuani’s older brother puts it out for a corner.

  17. SubwayJared says:

Jozy rips a shot, but it’s blocked and Adam Johnson follows up by missing everything.

  18. SubwayJared says:

Boring stretch of play here. Petersborough actually getting into some dangerous areas. Sunderland’s defense is… poor.

  19. biff says:

There is audio possibility for the game on the Sunderland web site, but you have to register. And fairly good match commentary, but not as good as SubwayJared’s.

  20. SubwayJared says:

Zakuani’s older brother is a machine in the back for Petersborough. He’s shutting down pretty much all the dangerous forays from Sunderland right now.

  21. biff says:

Also see that a chance Brek Shea might get a chance to play tomorrow for Stoke.

    link to

  22. SubwayJared says:

Petersborough is taking it to Sunderland right now. Stretch there where Sunderland couldn’t clear the ball.

  23. SubwayJared says:

Jozy the other way with some nifty footwork to make up for a pretty bad pass from… Larsson maybe? Earns a corner.

Sunderland score off the corner! Roberge (defender?) with the goal.

  24. SubwayJared says:

Jozy played in by Cattermole. Great run. Puts the ball in for Larrson who kind of miffs it.

  25. SubwayJared says:

Jozy earns a free kick with some nice hold up play. He’s playing really smart.

  26. Tony in Quakeland says:

I hereby nominate SubwayJared asSBI poster of the year

  27. SubwayJared says:

Jozy with another dangerous shot, blocked out for a corner.

    • kimo says:

What formation is Sunderland playing? Is Jozy being allowed to run into space or is he primarily playing w/ his back to goal?

      • SubwayJared says:

They’ve been moving around like a 4-3-3 almost. Jozy spent most of the game working with Giaccherni and Cattermole with some nice passing sequences and run-offs. He was interchanging and moving ina and out.

Announcer said this was how the U21s play (the interim HC is the U21 guy apparently) so maybe we see that in the BPL matches. One can hope!

  28. SubwayJared says:

    Bad news bears.

Jozy coming off. Maybe I’m a homer, but he was their most consistently dangerous player. There’s a lid over the goal for him. He did everything (including crushing the post) but score.

    • David M says:

Took a quick peek at the Sunderland messageboard. Mostly very positive comments about Jozy. A typical example: “Would like to see Jozy get a goal. Played very well and hold up play has been quality.”

      • SubwayJared says:

Good to see. Would be hard to watch that and have anything poor to say.

        • Michael Stypulkoski says:

Sunderland were up 2-0 in a Cup game against a League One side, and there were less than ten minutes left. Thank goodness Jozy came off. And if anything, it just showed that they didn’t want to risk anything happening to him.

    • GW says:

Jozy has proven to be Sunderland’s best attacking player and their best hope for goals.

Therefore, whoever the new manager is, he will have to feature the Lazy One, especially since the transfer window is shut, if he wants to avoid relegation.

  29. Tensnake says:

Friedel with the clean sheet in Tottenham’s 4-0 over VIlla.

  30. Nihal2 says:

Has anyone seen the Jozy goal challenge?

  31. ed from houston says:

come on Montreal !! 5 more goals to go….
