The San Jose Earthquakes’ back line just got a little deeper.

San Jose announced on Tuesday that they have signed German right back Andres Gorlitz. The 32-year-old Gorlitz joins the Earthquakes after spending 12 years in the German professional ranks.

He was most recently at FC Ingolstadt 04 in the 2. Bundesliga, but has previously played for TSV 1860 Munich and Bayern Munich. Gorlitz also has some international experience under his belt, having earned two caps with Germany back in 2004.

“Andreas is an experienced veteran that has played at the highest level in Germany and with the German national team,” said Earthquakes head coach Mark Watson . “He has trained with us over the past month and has shown that he will be a good addition to our squad. We are happy to have him in San Jose.”

Gorlitz, who started in all eight of the matches he played in for Ingolstadt this season, is likely to push Brandon Barklage for the starting right back spot in San Jose.

What do you think of the Earthquakes’ addition of Gorlitz? Do you see him earning the starting right back spot at some point this season? Wish San Jose would have signed someone younger?

Nice move. I was initially flustered that San Jose let go two solid outside backs. This move takes some of the sting off. Hope this new guy is healthy and fit.

  2. Birgit Calhoun says:

Good to see another experienced defender on the team. Maybe he’ll fill the vacuum left by Beitashour.

Take this with a grain of salt but I would assume that Gorlitz is more-defensive minded than Beita. You won’t see him doing too many overlaps but I’m sure he will be steady and disciplined like most Germans.

  3. Wolf says:

Not sure what to make of this except to validate how cheap and erratic the Earthquakes organization is. Everyone knows that this team is lacking a solid creative midfield player, yet, they keep on buying players for positions in less need and the inevitable influx of no-name Caribian amateurs; because our GM John D. has no visibility whatsoever on how to build a competitive team. Go Quakes!
