  1. 4o says:

Expand to 24 teams and then focus on building up the 2nd and 3rd divisions with 12-16 teams each. I want a proper 3 division professional soccer league in this country.

Promotion and relegation can wait 30 years.

    • Eurosnob says:

We already have the 2nd and 3rd divisions in this country. However, the teams playing there have no shot at the promotion to the top division because of an anti-competitive nature of the MLS, a single entity. Promotion/relegation model is the norm in the world soccer. You can’t have a proper lower/top division system without giving an opportunity for the best to rise and the worst to go down.

      • Ded says:

Hey Teddy, don’t you have a job?

      • Drew11 says:

Orlando just got promoted. You must have been asleep. Don’t worry about US Soccer, it will do just fine without you.

      • John O'Donnell says:

Ah, the styling’s of #TinFoilTed on the day Garber told him, sorry my friend, it’s not gone to happen.

  2. 4o says:

also create some PR. Make poster boys if you will but select guys like DEMPSEY or Bradley or heck even Rimando

don’t use DONOVAN. We wanna see attacking scoring or well measured players represented. Players that say “came from the bottom, now I’m here

    • the original jb says:

Um, so the all-time US goals and assist leader is not “attacking” or “scoring”? I love all the players you mentioned but if you think Dempsey or Bradley is more engaging than Donovan then you havent been paying attention.

      • 4o says:

from a PR perspective. Bradley was 18 when he left the league. He speaks multiple languages. Has earned the respect from a huge club like ROMA

Dempsey was raised in East Texas and came to be 1 of the best players in the EPL during the 2011-12 season.

they have the goods to be spokesmen for the NT and MLS

        Donovan does not.

    • slowleftarm says:

Donovan is the best American player of all-time. I guess you don’t like him but that’s not a good reason for the league not to market him.

      • bb says:

Exactly. I don’t know how old 4o is, but Donovan has pretty much been the face of the USMNT since the 2002 WC. Other guys have gotten some commercials on ESPN (Jozy comes to mind) but until Donovan retires, he will always be a major marketing tool for soccer in the US.

  3. Reed says:

Oh god, it must be CBA time. He’s talking about MLS teams losing money.

  4. Jacknut says:

Wow, listening to Garber now, I’m reminded of how much MLS has changed under his watch, mostly for the better. I was fortunate to meet him once in 2004 when we were both stuck in an airport during a flight delay (He was in first class, I wasn’t). Even then, he had a real vision for where MLS could go.

    • Quit whining about soccer in the US says:

His vision doesn’t match the vision of someone guy wasting his life posting 40,000 times that MLS should have pro/rel so he is not any good or very smart.

  5. crazy ideas says:

raise the salary cap to 3.5 million and to 5 million by 2020

make the minimum salary 75 K.

Allow players to get loans to European or Mexican or ASIAN clubs.

Allow our young players a shot at the Eredivisie. they will train them pretty damn well. Let 16-19 year olds head there and I guarantee a year later when they return to MLS, can sell them all for 2 million a pop.

  6. Ron says:

MLS should zip right past 24 teams and then create MLS 1 and MLS 2. Pro-rel right there. Say 16 teams in each level. Plus some sort of MLS Open Cup tournament.

    • Northzax says:

There already is an open cup including all MLS teams, why would we need another one?

  7. Clyde Frog says:

When did Garber start looking like Vladimir Putin???

  8. Quit whining about soccer in the US says:

2/3rds the way through it…..changes to the playoffs equals BIGGER playoffs…no doubt about it. Can’t believe someone said does that mean single elimination….I think it will be the exact opposite 3 games series. I hope that goes all the way through to the championships.
