Sporting KC waive Jerome, free up third roster spot

Sporting Kansas City announced Monday it has waived 23-year-old defender Mechack Jerome, freeing up a third roster spot.

The Haitian signed with Sporting KC in February 2013 and appeared in 16 matches, 12 of those coming in MLS play. Jerome also appeared in three CONCACAF Champions League matches — the most recent being the club’s 5-1 loss to Cruz Azul on March 19 — and one Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup game in 2013.

Last week, the club also waived defender Josh Gardner. He and Jerome appeared in the loss to Cruz Azul, leaving homegrown defender Kevin Ellis the last remaining wingback on the team who played in Mexico City.

Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes said last week that the club expects to ink a deal with an unannounced international player soon. Monday, Vermes told the KC Star the team is looking to add two new players “hopefully in the next couple of days.”

Out of the now three available roster spots, two are on-budget and one is an off-budget spot. The club is still trying to juggle a difficult situation with midfielder Peterson Joseph that may or may not result in a fourth roster opening. Jospeh has been sidelined since late last year with an undiagnosed illness after collapsing at training for the second time in his Sporting KC tenure.

Sporting KC return to MLS action Saturday at home against Real Salt Lake in a rematch of last year’s MLS Cup final. The match will kickoff at 8:30 p.m. ET.

Unless I misread, I believe Peterson Joseph on in the 18 this past Saturday.

Definitely wasn’t in the 18. He hasn’t even trained with the the team since collapsing last year.

However, he has been “upgraded” to “out” on the MLS injury report in recent weeks. Still, a very unknown situation though.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Jerome bounced back to Orlando.

Never seen this guy play before that thrashing from Cruz Azul, and it convinced me he‘s not an MLS level player. All athletism and zero skill upstairs. Reminded me of a young Mikael Sylvester; has the physical tools to one of the best, but where is the soccer brain?
