Jozy for the brace. Gooch for Man of the Match

  2. yikes says:

Massive support to those Ukranians fighting for Freedom.

  3. AC says:

Are there going to be any people in the stands?

  4. away goals says:

I’ll be posting this in a bunch of threads today. Futile though I’m sure it will be. Created yesterday to change the crest. The current clip art badge is just the worst. vamos estados unidos

    • Flint says:

I haven’t seen this big a commotion since Kim Kardashian released her fall lineup.
It’s just a jersey. You can either buy it or not. Whatever you do, Just move on.

    • Huffleigh says:

Why do people act like the Centennial crest is anything special? They need to redesign (keep Nike and Adidas the hell away from it) the crest. Give it a simple classy look.

  5. Ryan says:

I really dislike Castillo at lb instead of Johnson when aron can play center with Dempsey on the left.

    • shawn says:

    • EspinDOHla says:

Agree as well but F. Johnson and Aron are definitely going to Brazil. Castillo is on the bubble so this is a good chance to see what he’s got.

      • Jordan Millidge says:

I was never a fan of Castillo at LB. He’s a little undersized but we’ll see what he can do today.

      • Nate Dollars says:

yeah, but it would be cool to see what castillo’s got in his best position, which is LM/LW, not LB.

  6. HoboMike says:

I’d think this is probably the last chance for Kljestan to show what he can do, right? The excuses about him playing out of position need to stop.

  7. Alex says:

Please not taylor twellman calling these games…

    • dude1 says:

      Shrug, better than John Harkes.

      • Gabe says:

        “Dempsey is selfish”
        “Dempsey needs to improve”
        “Dempsey is playing poorly”
“Dempsey needs to work on his touch”

“Hi, I’m Taylor Twellman. Sorry about that. Some envious, vindictive has-been took over the broadcast for a moment.”

  8. Since 82 says:

This lineup suggests to me that Donovan may not start in Brazil.

    • shawn says:

      if any1 Dempsey shouldn’t start

    • slowleftarm says:

JK has had an issue with LD since he took over. Personally, JK’s tactics and selections haven’t impressed me and LD is the greatest player in US history so I know who I’m backing.

      • Jordan Millidge says:

LD needs to start. By far our best creator and clutch player.

      • Don the Jewler says:

wasn’t 2013 one of our most successful years ever? and what makes you believe JK might not start Landon?

        • Since 82 says:

If JK does not see FJ as a LB … I have a hard time seeing Donovan starting over FJ at LM. Personally, right now, I would prefer to see Donovan withdrawn behind Altidore over Dempsey.

        • slowleftarm says:

It was successful but past Hex years have been just as good. I don’t put much stock in the win in the B team gold cup.

    • Ian says:

Alarmist. JK just spent all of Camp Cupcake with LD. He knows what he’s getting with Landon. It’s Dempsey who has the big question mark over his head.

    • William the Terror says:

LD is not even with the team. If he were with the team, and he was not dressed for the game, and we had heard no news of an injury (quite a few ifs and ands there), your comment might have some credibility. But it is impossible to infer anything about Donovan’s status from the present set of facts.

  9. Jordan Millidge says:

What are your thoughts on our outside back positions. I know Castillo and Cameron are starting today, but for the world cup I want Fabian and Cameron. Let me know what you think.

  10. bizzy says:

This is going to be a very interesting back line. I hope Ukraine really puts it to the ultimate test being out the best in Onyewu. Also is going to be great seeing the current form of Dempsey and Altidore (not exactly Portugal or Germany but will do….lol). Lets see how our team can perform without any MLS players (Hahahahahaha…, it show how far our league has come when the team looks weaker WITHOUT MLS players).

  11. Kodi says:

    New kit looks….well …white.

  12. Ian says:

Poignant stuff during the Ukrainian national anthem. “Ukraine Has Not Yet Perished”. How apropos.

  13. Jordan Millidge says:

lots of pressure from ukraine right off the start

  14. shawn says:

    sloppy play early

  15. kevin says:

Our kits are just ripoffs of England’s 2010 WC kits then?

  16. Jordan Millidge says:

    Center Backs look sketchy

  17. Joe says:

Jozys first touch on that chest ball was horrific.

  18. Joe says:

Cameron going to need way way better crosses than that if he wants that wingback spot.

  19. TomG says:

    Wow. How did that happen?

  20. shawn says:

    wow jab fault

  21. TomG says:

Ugh, Bedoya HAS to hit Altidore on that give and go. Easy little pass.

    • Brett says:

It was a little heavy but Jozy needs to stay on his feet there too.

      • TomG says:

Stay on his feet? What are you talking about? He slid in a desperate attempt to reach a bad pass out of his reach. You’d rather he not make any effort?

  22. TomG says:

Twellman’s an idiot. That was way offside.

  23. Patient US Fan says:

Anyone got a good feed that they can share? Thanks

  24. usaalltheway says:

I have said it once, and I will say it again: The problem is “our” coach. He simply isn’t that good.

We have the players for a solid, although weaker team by comparative standards. Why do we always underperform?

The US is going to BOMB OUT in the World Cup. Zero goals, zero wins.

    • Joe says:

      Go away. Seriously.

    • dude says:

bold statement nostraDOOSHmas. we have the group of death so getting beat by Germany and Portugal isn’t going out on a limb. honestly the comments on this fffing site

    • Increase0 says:

So far the only problem is our CB suck. But these 2 aren’t starters… or even the primary back ups….

I don’t get it. Does Jurgen play CB?

      • usaalltheway says:

The whole team is looking poor.

Also, isn’t Brooks still available to switch to Germany? I am not saying he will, but I believe he is not cap-tied yet.

JK is not a good coach. He was a great player but it doesn’t translate to coaching.

    • Pace says:

      It’s cuz he’s german

    • Chris says:

You just pop in here, pick a random complaint, and go town with it right? You have something new to whine about all the time.

I will hold to that zero goals, zero wins prediction buddy.

  25. sammysounder says:

Brad Evans is not the most talented player, but the first Ukrainian goal was horrible. The initial D was bad enough, but then Howard made a phenomenal save and the defense had not gotten back. Cameron didn’t even make it onto the television screen when the second shot went in.

Brad Evans would have been back.

    • Andy in Atlanta says:

Cameron is not used to his CBs at Stoke making bonehead offside trap errors either though… Brooks screwed the pooch there…

    • Bean says:

This seems like an assumption. Evens would’ve been back, unless he had different instructions from Klinnsman?

    • Quit whining about soccer in the US says:

Not a hug Evans fan for a starter role, but he would have been back….zero doubt.

  26. TomG says:

US playing a lot of offside trap and risking getting burned. Not enough pressure on the passers either.

  27. Joe says:

Jozy offside and misses the pass. His hold up play has been real bad so far.

    • Andy in Atlanta says:

Seriously… I am wondering if Jozy ever played any other sports in the US… his ability to judge a ball in the air and where it will end up is laughable…

    • TomG says:

Making stuff up. You’re not watching and this never happened.

      • Andy in Atlanta says:

are you joking? watch him on a long ball in the air towards him from the back… he rarely gets his head on a ball because he can’t judge the flight…

      • Joe says:

        Stop responding to me.

That literally just happened. You are an unreal homer.

    • Jesse D says:

Truth is Jozy actually had good hold up play today. Sprung guys a couple times, but couldn’t get involved much beyond that and a couple of flick headers.

  28. Joe says:

Jones has been everywhere making plays so far.

  29. TomG says:

Another bad turnover by Bedoya on a simple, easy pass.

  30. Patrick says:

    Backline is getting shredded…

    • TomG says:

To be fair, they are playing a very high line which seems to be the plan from the start, but the midfielders are not putting enough pressure on the passers, so the backline is completely exposed.

      • Increase0 says:

Ya, but the CBs aren’t marking anyone on the really dangerous plays. I feel like Sacha has been a little absent so far.

        • TomG says:

As far as I understand, they’re not supposed to be marking per se as much as holding their line.

  31. bbstl says:

    Gooch looks old.

  32. arsenal says:

Gooch. Man, what are you doing? You got to pay attention the runs behind you, not double teaming a player already marked by brooks.

  33. Jordan Millidge says:

We look pretty bad at the moment. No one making runs on the attack and they’re just gutting our defense…

  34. Brett says:

Dempsey is not good in this playmaker role. Fabian was unlocking the defense wih a run and Deuce wastes possession.

  35. QuakerOtis says:

Castillo… wow. We might as well play a 3-5-1.

    • QuakerOtis says:

Jones the only semi-bright spot. Would say Johnson too, but they can’t get him the ball enough.

  36. TomG says:

Nice little combo play by Jozy/Cameron.

  37. USMNT Fan says:

BROOKS has been a dominant force in the air, but his positional sense is questionable.

JONES has been a destroyer and facilitator, but KLJESTAN seems lost beside JONES.

We haven’t seen enough of BEDOYA or JOHNSON on the ball.

    DEMPSEY’s distribution has been atrocious.

JOZY looks as though he’s playing for Sunderland.

    • Increase0 says:

Kljestan doesn’t seem like he has been in the game at all. I can’t say he has been bad though… just not in the game enough.

  38. soccerhorn says:

Can’t wait to see possession minutes at halftime. 70/30?

  39. Courey says:

Love the boys….but it’s like “Revenge of the Nerds” out there, with those buttons up to their Adam’s apples.

  40. TomG says:

Castillo caught way, way out of position.

  41. arsenal says:

Castillo is making brooks’ job so much harder.

  42. Jordan Millidge says:

Please God let LD play our CAM in the world cup instead of Clint…

    • Jesse D says:

unfortunately, right now I agree. I really hope Clint gets motivated to get it back together.

  43. Brett says:

I think we should bring in a road cone for Castillo. Probably would be more effective.

  44. USMNT Fan says:

CASTILLO has been beat too often at LB and JOHNSON hasn’t gotten forward enough. They need to switch positions.

  45. Joe says:

Jones far and away our best player thus far.

  46. SBI TroII says:

Putting Castillo at LB and not Johnson is a huge tactical error by Jürgen.

    • Increase0 says:

I don’t see it that way. He clearly wants Castillo to have a game at LB. I do agree its not working but I think he is being tested on purpose. Hence is the only 1 who flew over from North America.

  47. USMNT Fan says:

    CAMERON 0-for-3 in crossing.

  48. foooo says:

So which team is going to the world cup?

  49. Brett says:

Cameron wastes another cross. This is why Evans is ahead of him, I guess.

  50. Jordan Millidge says:

Oh my God our defense looks awful

  51. TomG says:

Awful turnover by Sacha should have caused a goal.

  52. Joe says:

    Onyewu doing ….?!?!?

Brooks showing some real speed in cover.

  53. usaalltheway says:

Seriously people. Can anyone say they have any faith in this team?

JK has got to go. Get us a real coach.

The US is playing so poorly. It’s a joke.

    • foooo says:

For the love of God… Shut. The. F&%$. Up!

    • Joe says:

    • QuakerOtis says:

      Do not feed

    • arsenal says:

Lol are you serious? The guy who has coached us to our best year, ever? That is the coach you are talking about? This is a friendly, you know, to see who we have in our depth chart and who maybe can cover other positions in case of injury. Oraybe that was sarcasm…I can only hope.

      • usaalltheway says:

Not at all man. The team is playing very poorly. I am just calling like I see it.

At this point, friendlies are VERY IMPORTANT.

JK isn’t a good coach. I doubt you will agree but the World Cup will prove me right.

How can anyone be happy with any of this performance. Disjointed, unproductive, overly-cautious and timid. All in all, there is not one positive to take away from this first half.

Too much anger on the Internet. It’s just my opinion. I don’t hold it against anyone if they don’t agree with me. It’s just a game at the end of day. PEACE!

        • Freddy Adu says:

Half of this team won’t see the field in Brazil, and Ukraine is probbaly a top 20 side. They narrowly missed out qualifying to England and France. How can you possibly judge our quality on this match with half a squad? Do you remember what sorts of teams we used to trot out?

        • Maykol says:

Im not sure the world cup will show whether klinsmann is a bad coach, even the best coaches in the world probably wouldnt get the US out of their group

          • usaalltheway says:

            You make an interesting point.

I still don’t like JK. He would make a great director of some kind. A behind the scenes guy getting things done but as a coach…he leaves so much to be desired.

            • Gary Page says:

This is what is wrong these days. people make conclusions on the basis of belief instead of facts. On what do you make your conclusions? Have you seen how the team practices? Have you talked to the players one on one to get their opinions? Have you talked to JK about his strategical and tactical plans? Do you know what his plans are for the group games? Here are the salient facts. The only real important basis for judging a national team coach is if he/she qualifies the team for a World cup and how well the team does in the World Cup. Everything else is filler and basically irrelevant. So far the US has qualified with its highest point total in history. We don’t know how well they will do in the WC. Thus, to say that JK can’t coach at this point is stupid and ignorant because to this point he has done better than any other USMNT coach.

        • Brit says:

Sorry dude. Calling for JK to go a few months before the world cup is stupid. It has zero chance of happening and offers nothing constructive. You are basically baiting people with a comment and then attempting to take the high road with a love and peace response. It is a very tired and boring thing to do on an otherwise fun blog.

          • usaalltheway says:

I am not calling for him to be replaced at this moment.

You are over-reading into my words.

    • Gary Page says:

Your problem is you are so predictable and keep saying the same thing over and over again. At least come up with something new. You just waste space on my computer screen.

  54. TomG says:

A couple really disappointing crosses by Cameron. Very unlike him.

  55. Atx Colin says:

Sachs looking to turn in another forgettable performance. Bad give away in front if box and middle of field. Dude is soft, SOFT. JJ holding it down per usual.

    • Neruda says:

Jones is so tough but he frustrates fans with his bad attempts at tricky passes that fail. He likes to think he can thread the needle like Zidane but he’s a ball winner and keeper who’s easier on the blood pressure for us fans when he plays the easy direct pass.

That said, everyone on the US had way too many piss poor passes.

  56. Joe says:

It’s abundantly clear why Goeff Cameron should not be the right back.

    • slowleftarm says:

Yet somehow he plays there every week in the Premier League and has been one of Stoke’s better players this season.

    • Freddy Adu says:

Yeah, the guy who has performed well for a full season at right back in arguably best league in the world should be replaced by a guy who doesn’t play RB in a 4th or 5th tier league and has had mixed results playing that position in a weak confederation.

  57. Craig says:

Jones being stranded by his fellow mids.

  58. TomG says:

Jozy and Deuce way too slow getting back onside there, IMO.

  59. USMNT Fan says:

KLINSMANN looks concerned! Is that a first!? Can’t be good.

    • QuakerOtis says:

Probably because this game is a tryout, and the guys who need to prove themselves aren’t playing like it.

      • Kctc says:

Completely agree. This is the European tryout and no one (other than Howard) has stepped up.

  60. Joe says:

    Kjlestan pass to nobody!

  61. Brett says:

“Kljestan” has to mean “turnover of possession” in some language.

  62. USMNT Fan says:

    KLJESTAN with another giveaway.

BEDOYA has been a positive at RM. He is the only one offering some wing play.

    • Increase0 says:

Johnson was hot the first 15 minutes or so. But the ball has been away from him for a while now.

  63. TomG says:

Love some of the creative touches Bedoya is trying, but none of them coming off so far and he has to clean up his simple touches.

  64. foooo says:

I would look concerned if my European-based players, who are fighting for a ticket to Brazil, looked as awful as they do today.
Only Jones looks like he even belongs anywhere remotely near South America at this point.

  65. USMNT Fan says:

KLJESTAN, DEMPSEY and JOZY will likely be subbed off at halftime.

  66. TomG says:

    Some very pretty passing now.

  67. Andy in Atlanta says:

The Dempsey bashing is getting out of control… he is not playing nearly as bad as people are saying.. we all need a scapegoat… moving the ball in the center is SKs job anyway…

    • Brett says:

All he is doing is dropping back into the midfield and playing lay offs. In the box he’s just waiting to poach.

      • Andy in Atlanta says:

Sounds like the Clint Dempsey we have known for years? He is not some wizard distributor. He battles and takes chances when they present themselves..

        • Brett says:

He needs to be making more runs and pressing the attack, not jogging through the midfield.

          • USMNT Fan says:

I wouldn’t say commentating on a players performance, whether good or bad, is bashing if its factual.

  68. Brett says:

Gooch ruins a long spell of possession with an aimless long pass. Anyone else feeling nostalgic?

    • QuakerOtis says:

Exactly what I’ve been thinking the last few weeks. It’s been funny to hear all this “Gooch is back!” hype is hillarious. He no longer had knees, and he never could pass.

  69. Jordan Millidge says:

    Cameron: Good defending, bad crosses
    Onyewu: Looks just awful
Brooks: Looks lost, but recovers with speed
Castillo: It’s like he’s not even there
    Kljestan: Looks scared, bad distribution
Jones: Playing well, dominant force in the back, best player at the moment
Bedoya: Decent distribution, not much else to go off of
    Dempsey: Still looks awful
Johnson: Currently our best midfielder, but would do better in Castillo’s spot
Jozy: Not a lot to go off of, decent runs, not linking up with mids very well

Overall, I give our squad a 4/10 for this half. Not playing well at all

    • usaalltheway says:

      Nice analyses man!

I agree with most of it. Jones still doesn’t impress me at all.

Also, I think you are too kind to Jozy. His confidence is just gone. Poor guy. He plays so poorly for a great player.

That save by Howard was great. He is the only player out there I have any faith in at this point.

What do you think of the coach?

    • Quit whining about soccer in the US says:

      100% agreement

      • Jordan Millidge says:

Can’t believe I forgot Howard. He’s been playing very well today, goal wasn’t his fault. And maybe I am too kind to Jozy, I just want him to succeed so badly. But when it comes to coaching, I like what JK is doing. I just wished he subbed off Castillo. Thanks for the compliments.

  70. Sunderland Supporter says:

Jozy is getting no service from this horrid mid field. His teammates couldn’t make it in MLS

    • Maykol says:

Pretty sure everybody on the squad, except maybe cody cropper, would be a starter in MLS

  71. TomG says:

Klinsman SCREAMING “HIGHER, HIGHER, HIGHER!!!” Ball pressure is not nearly enough.

  72. foooo says:

I don’t care if the U.S. wins or loses today. The result, after all, is 100% meaningless.
However, it would be nice to see the players… I dunno… play like professionals or something.

  73. TomG says:

Good cover and defensive header by Bedoya.

  74. Joe says:

    Brooks playing better now.
    Onyewu is just done.

    Kjlestan must be pulled.

    Jones is a beast.

  75. foooo says:

Hey Ghana! You ready for the mighty yanks?

    • Joe says:

      They lost to Macedonia today.

      • arsenal says:

They only played one serious starter. Everyone else sat on the bench. I think played Montenegro.

        • slowleftarm says:

This isn’t exactly our A team. This game means nothing, relax.

        • Increase0 says:

They put in their subs. A lot of the scary guys played at the end. Also like Slowleftarm says. Were missing some key guys. Certain centerbacks for one thing.

        • Gary Page says:

If USALLTHEWAY were a Ghana fan, he would conclude from their performance that their coach is lousy.

  76. Vik says:

I know there are a few players who haven’t played for the nats in a while, but still a pretty embarrassing performance so far.

    • usaalltheway says:

Totally agreed! Embarrassing is the word.

I have this feeling the coach doesn’t know what he is doing…

  77. timothy says:

When did the us go down to 10 men? They only seem to have 3 defenders and an orange traffic cone that someone threw on the pitch

  78. chris says:

    Bring on Juan

  79. Automata says:

Michael Bradley makes the world go ’round. Looking very hollow in the middle.

    • Mason says:

      Every boat needs a rudder.

    • Fair observer says:

It’s so obvious too. We are a completely different team with Bradley an Donovan both on the field. Howard, Cameron, gonzo, beaker, FJ, JJ, Bradley, zusi, Donovan, Dempsey, altidore should be our WC starting lineup hands down. Shea, mix, EJ/Boyd/Aron should be the subs depending on situation.

All in all we shouldn’t judge too much in a tryout game like today but a 2-0 loss is never good.

      • Brett says:

Dempsey is down, Aron is up. Today proved it yet again. I love Deuce but his timing was just off. He had his best year 2 years too early and it’s all downhill from here. He was receiving passes from the back lone and jogging.

  80. arsenal says:

Cameron — Looks really poor going forward and really hasn’t passed well. Terrible crosses! Played well defensively.
Gooch — Not covering, poor passing, holding the ball for way too long.
Brooks — Made a mistake on the goal, but no one came back after the initial save to help out. Played well defensively and passed well.
Castillo — Making Brooks works really hard, looks good going forward, but no doing his first job — play defense

Bedoya — Working hard as usual. Cant get forward really because he is helping Cameron and no one is showing to the ball when he has it.
Jones — Best player out there.
Kljestan — Should be demoted to water boy. Actually, he should never play for the U.S. again, or be near the team. There are no more excuses.
Johnson — Playing well, but can’t get forward as much as he should be able to.

Dempsey — Not doing anything really, except dropping back. Looks terrible.
Altidore — Bad first touch and passing.

    Just my opinion :)

  81. Vic says:

Terrible lineup. Put William or Morales in for Klesjtan. Also Johannsen for Dempsey or Altidore.

  82. Ives Shawn says:

jesus castillo sucks and i cant find kjestian and we have no final 3rd play aRGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  83. Landon Klinsmann says:

Kliestian has bunched his ticket to Brazil. Wait a minute, I mean to the Bahamas, during the World Cup in Brazil. He looks like Beckerman (of old) just aimlessly connecting and sometimes not connecting on meaningless passes.

  84. USMNT Fan says:

    Options on the bench:

WILLIAMS for KLJESTAN to push JONES forward
JOHANNSSON for ALTIDORE because his technical ability is required in this compact match

  85. USMNT Fan says:

    DEMPSEY gives the ball away.

  86. Brett says:

Dempsey picks up where he left off.

  87. Joe says:

Clint Dempsey literally does.t look like he wants to be playing.

  88. USMNT Fan says:

ONYEWU gives the ball away without defensive pressure.

  89. Pace says:

    We look terrible.

  90. Joe says:

    Jozy wtf was that

  91. Brett says:

Jozy and Dempsey look like strangers. We need AJ.

  92. William the Terror says:

A lot of these comments remind me of the way the fans were discussing the prospects for the Cleveland Indians upcoming season in the movie Major League. A lot of doom and gloom, but the Indians turned out okay. Maybe we will too. Of course, that was a movie and we don’t have a coach as good as Lou Brown. But we have our Cerrano (Jozy) and our Wild Thing (Dempsey). We just need to find our Jobu!

  93. USMNT Fan says:

The offense is flowing through BEDOYA.

  94. Joe says:

Wow Altidore wtf else do you want?!?!?

    What a miss.

    • usaalltheway says:

Aren’t you one of the guys always attacking me for my criticisms of Jozy??

If not, my excuses. If so, well….

  95. Brett says:

Jozy’s forgotten how high the frame is, I suppose. Hope he remembers soon.

  96. Justice from Brookly says says:

gotta say, i don’t mind the new kit right now. it’s just the damn crest that’s killing me…

  97. arsenal says:

Great by by Johnson and Klejstan….does what he always does… :(

  98. Jordan Millidge says:

Playing much better now. This is what I like to see!

  99. fischy says:

Shambolic defending from the USA in first half, but they’re looking hungry on offense now.

  100. Ives Shawn says:

    take dempsey off please

  101. Jordan Millidge says:

    Hope Jones isn’t hurt…

  102. USMNT Fan says:

Our player of the match, JONES, is down.

  103. USMNT Fan says:

ONYEWU with some solid defensive work on the right wing.

  104. Brett says:

Jozy horribly mistimes another jump ad Cameron wastes another cross.

  105. Landon Klinsmann says:

    Release the Brekken!

  106. slowleftarm says:

How is Brek Shea still getting a game for the USMNT?

  107. Jordan Millidge says:

    YES Johannson is on

  108. Joe says:

Shea has bulked up something serious..

  109. Kodi says:

I just don’t see the Kevin Bacon comparison. I mean there is a slight resemblance, about as much as Klinsmann and Detlef Schrempf.

  110. Jordan Millidge says:

Defenders are leaving Howard out to dry…2-0

  111. Ives Shawn says:

    WHAT THE *********************************!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  112. Brett says:

    Slop goal.

  113. usaalltheway says:

And that second goal proves me right.

    Here comes the personal attacks in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1……

  114. Pace says:

Us has played well for 5 minutes

  115. MikeG says:

What do you know about lineup selections and approaches to the game?

  116. Jordan Millidge says:

Brooks and Onyewu are basically asking to not go to Brazil

  117. Joe says:

    Onyewu nowhere to be seen.

  118. Ives Shawn says:

    thats the shea we need

  119. Joe A. says:

I personally think johnson and castillo should swap positions (in general)

  120. Brett says:

This is more fuel for the fire of those who say the US couldn’t qualify from Europe. We look outclassed in every part of the field.

    • foooo says:

I’m not sure anyone could ever be taken seriously if they suggested the U.S. would qualify in UEFA.

    • Freddy Adu says:

half this team wont see the field in Brazil. You can’t take anything away from this match about the quality of our overall team. You can draw conclusions about our depth, sure. And I’m not sure who thought we”d get out of UEFA anyway.

      • foooo says:

Ukraine won’t be going to Brazil at all. Yet, they are playing like a team that is preparing to go, rather than the timid/disinterested/boneheaded BS we’ve seen from the yanks.
Regardless of how understrength this U.S. team is, it still represents the majority of the European-based American players — players who also happen to be fighting for a world cup spot. The fact that it looks like boys against men is telling, and yes, it shows that the U.S. has very little depth.

        • Kosh says:

It was a bad performance. Yes. But we wouldn’t be calling oursleves world beaters if we had won this game 10-0, so your bombastic tales of woe and sings of the end times on the other end of the spectrum may be a bit over the top. No?

We don’t have to qualify for Europe so that means jack squat. I can just as easily say that many Euro teams would have a tough go of it qualifying in CONCACAF – which means jack squat.

The game was a warm-up and a test of character and, though I didn’t watch it, it seems a great many guys didn’t do themselves any favors. Its a process and JK is doing his thing. I am quite certain we have’t been eliminated as of today.

Let’s chilax a bit, let the process play itself out and put things in perspective.

  121. Courey says:

Anyone else loose the deuces signal?

  122. Manny says:

The captain’s band and the fat wallet seem to have slowed Dempsey down. Gone is that East Texas glare, replaced with the Rafa Marquez too cool for the pitch slow jog.

  123. Jordan Millidge says:

Besler would have prevented 1 if not both of those goals. Maybe even Gonzales or Goodson would have too. But Onyewu and his 70-year-old-man knees are killing us…

  124. Joe says:

Jozy can’t complete a simple lay off pass…

AJ did great to set that up.

    • beachbum says:

he completed those passes most of the game. in the first half he was the one who could actually make a pass to get the team into the final third

he wasn;t great but not a train wreck

the backline’s inability to play simple football doomed the whole squad. Should have been 5-0 Ukraine

  125. William the Terror says:

So, we go to Brazil with an all MLS lineup, except for Johansen and Jones and Bedoya. Clint stays home, too.

  126. Ralph says:

Take Altidore out. He killed both of those attacks.

  127. Jordan Millidge says:

Wow…just wow…what in God’s name is Brooks doing

  128. Pace says:

    Ok brooks, tv off

  129. Ralph says:

Notice nobody wants to comment on both cases there of Jozy turning the ball over with a bad pass and a really poor first touch.

  130. Alex says:

In CO. ESPN2 out. Anyone else experiencing Sam thing?

  131. Gerard D. says:

Altidore’s first touch really is terrible.

  132. Brett says:

Dempsey should be booked. Thug play is above the Stars and Stripes, son.

  133. Jordan Millidge says:

We have 8 shots. 0 on goal. Just wow

  134. Jordan Millidge says:

I love Aron Johannson. That volley was a beaut

  135. Brett says:

This team is above average when Jozy and Clint are on form. We’re staring 0 points in the face come June.

  136. Ted Tran says:

Classy move by Clint. I think Klinsy should consider dropping this thug from the squad.

  137. Ian says:

Fugly display from basically every American on the pitch, even Howard. If this is what we should expect from the European contingent going into Brazil… Yikes.

  138. Gerard D. says:

Johannson showed pretty well why he should be starting ahead of Altidore who could barely trap a ball.

No wonder he was dropped from Sunderland’s squad entirely.

  139. TomG says:

Anyone else completely lose their espn2 feed?

  140. QuakerOtis says:

    Williams doesnt look horrible… *shrugs*

  141. Joe A. says:

Klinsmann needs to pull the trigger and start johannson. Play castillo in left mid or replace him with beasley. Dempsey is no longer a starter.

  142. Jordan Millidge says:

Johansson, Williams, Bedoya, Jones, Howard, Johnson, Cameron, and even Shea all played pretty well. Everyone else looked either bad (Jozy, Clint) or just awful (Onyewu, Brooks, Castillo, Kljestan) Thank God this isn’t our first team

  143. Adam M. says:

The writer from Grantland who said the US shouldn’t bring Julian Green to Brasil even if he were willing to make the switch needs to re-think his analysis. We just don’t have the talent, period.

  144. MikeG says:

Just shows you how US players should aspire to Champions League caliber teams and not MLS teams (for awhile at least). MLS will get there baptism this World Cup.

  145. Shawn says:

    updated starting xi

    Fabian——-Besler——Gonzo——— Cameron—

  146. Larry says:

Ugh. Some wasted opportunities to learn things, since we already know that:
    1. Castillo isn’t a international quality left back – maybe wingback.
    2. Jones and Kljestan don’t complement each other well – and neither are defensive/holding midfielders.

  147. Shawn says:

did this guy just say brad evans is still our starting rb

  148. BeardedSoccer says:

Uninspired and piss poor technically. No one showed any quality. For the life of me I don’t see anything in Brooks so far. I haven’t seen him play in Germany, but in all his USA appearances he hasn’t looked like any kind of prospect. Gooch is done. Sacha is done. Altidore just pisses me off to watch. Dempsey starting to piss me off too.

  149. TomG says:

Pretty much just confirmed what everyone already suspected: no Sacha, no Brooks, no Castillo, no Gooch.

    • K Haro says:

nailed it. bye bye to those guys for the 23 spots. biggest disappointment tonight though, as foooooo points out below, is Altidore and Dempsey. Especially Dempsey. Seems like he didn’t even want to be there. Stop being so graumpy dude, you’re a freaking millionaire for Christ’s sake!!!

  150. foooo says:

JA and CD are on the bubble for me.
I’m sure they’ll end up in Brazil, but at the moment they don’t deserve to be there.

    • Joe A. says:

I think they deserve to be there. As for starting that’s another discussion.

      • Fair observer says:

People act like 2013 didn’t exist. Like jozy and Clint didn’t lead us to the World Cup in the most recent calendar year. Club form aside they have been hugely important for USA getting to WC. Take away their goals last year and we Wouldn’tve made the WC. Club form is different. They usually play well for USA. Assuming Bradley and Donovan play too (chemistry is huge). Jozy, Dempsey, Landon, Bradley and jones make up our best attack. Add zusi, bedoya, or FJ and we have the talent to succeed.

  151. Landon Klinsmann says:

I would like to be positive since most of the comments here are negative. Castillo was great at sucking. Kliestian was totally awesome at being anonymous. Our central defenders trusted their goalie to make great saves and he didn’t disappoint them.

  152. thatkidnandez says:

The US played uninspired tonight, just hope mexico loses Nigeria! Can’t wait till the US plays in Nigeria! Also JK don’t play Castillo at LB anymore use him at LM where he plays at for TJ

  153. biff says:

Very disappointed in the, how shall we say, the rough play from Clint in a friendly. I can understand that he maybe wanted to get the team fired up, but not cool and he could have received a red card for that tussle on the ground. Why the ref gave a yellow to the Ukrainian is a mystery.

    • beachbum says:

thank goodness he didn’t connect with that. would have been that much more horrible against a Ukraine team representing their country in crisis. embarrassing

  154. Flint says:

Hopefully Julian Green wasn’t watching this game

  155. Neruda says:

Well that makes it simple for Klinsi to elimanate players from the pre WC camp.

NAY: Sacha K, Gooch, Young JAB (he’s one for the next cycle), Castillo, (didn’t play Packwood, Spektor)
    YEA: Williams, Agudelo

Everyone else deserves a final look in the pre WC camp which doesn’t mean inclusion in the final squad.

  156. MikeG says:

You can take a good or bad team or whatever lineup you choose. IF the team does not get numbers in the penalty area the odds are very much against the team. Ukraine made effort after effort to get numbers in the penalty area and the focus they had showed on the second goal.

    • Neruda says:

Ukraine came to win. They pressed, attacked and played with some passion and emotion. Tip you’re hat when the opponent is better and wants it more. They’re quite good. I wonder how the MLS US squad would have managed. I would predict a 0-0 draw. Then again S Korea missed a few sure goals in that last game.

      • Birgit Calhoun says:

Right now all national teams are out to win. This is a World Cup Year, and players are wanting to be there.

  157. biff says:

Are we gonna see Chris Schuler get called up for Mexico in April? What other MLS central defenders might deserve a look?

  158. Landon Klinsmann says:

Italy v. Spain is much more entertaining!

  159. IndyElevenFan says:

    GK: Howard, Guzan
    LB: Fabian Johnson, Beasley
    RB: Evans, Cameron, Parkhurst
    CB: Besler, Gonzo, Goodson
    CM: Bradley, Jones, Williams
Att Wing: Donovan, Zusi, Bedoya, Eddie Johnson, Shea
    CAM: Dempsey, Mix
    ST: Altidore, Johannson, Wondolowski

  160. AC says:

Well that should answer some questions about a few guys

    • Kosh says:

      + 1

And that was the whole point. Win or lose – this was about seeing who has it and better yet who wants it. Bring on the red maker!

  161. kevin o'brien says:

Why was Brooks just jogging back on the second goal? He could have recovered had he gone into a full sprint. Instead he halfheartedly jogged back while Tim was working his ass off. No wonder his German coach hates him.

  162. ROP says:

I think Jozy and Clint are real issues going into the World Cup. Neither is playing well and both are long term starters for the USA and part of the “spine.” I am very worried that JK has invested so much in them that he can’t bench them. They may not be his best options at this point though.

    • foooo says:

They both need to be benched.

    • John says:

Klinsmann has left Jozy behind before even when playing well for his club. When Klinsmann made Clint captain it was for one reason. He was an example to other players to go fight for a spot at a big club. Of coarse Tottenham being one he spent some time at as a player himself. Now thats he’s in MLS I don’t see Klinsmann being as invested in Dempsey.

  163. Expat4455 says:

After the USA:Ukraine match I switched over to Germany:Chili. What a difference in lever of play.

    • Increase0 says:

Chili is pretty Boss. Germany is doing a good job of keeping them clear but they

    • usaalltheway says:

I did the same but for Italy and Spain.

      It’s really shocking.

The US is going to get murdered at the Cup.

      • K Haro says:

I definitely agree that the games look way different, and the quality is night and day, but remember that the US hasn’t had all it’s best players on the same field at the same time since literally 2010 at the last WC. Let’s not pass any judgement and assess our chances beforw we see the last 3 send off games. European teams don’t have this “guys over here guys over there” problem like we do, with different seasons/scheduling always complicating who plays in what friendly or tournament and when. Casting a wide net has its plusses and minuses, but once we have our last 23 squad, you can be confident JK will choose the best people taking into account what combos will work best. Don’t be surprised if people we consider the most talented are left at home for better overall pitch combos.

        • usaalltheway says:

Thanks for the kind, interesting and thoughtful response.

However, I can’t agree with any of it.

The team has looked completely disjointed for YEARS now. To this very day, we have no idea who are the players that JK wants to be play in Brazil. He mentioned a “spine” but that was only 6 players. What about the rest of the team?

Who will be the fullbacks? Who do you really want in the midfield? Jones and Bradley don’t work well together and when Bradley is gone, the team is completely lost. Who are our wingers? There are just too many unanswered questions.

I have watch 99% of the USMNT games since the World Cup in 2010. Since JK took over, the team has lost of it’s old qualities, while gaining no new qualities.

The team used to be able to handle high caliber teams, counter with pace, defend very well, and boss around lesser teams. There was a sense of community and mutual support and love. You saw it on the field and off. It’s all gone now.

All in all, I see no positives outside of Tim Howard.

I think too many of the fans are overly positive. Rose-colored glasses. Too many excuses. Too much resting on this last teams numbers and not on the actual quality of the team or it’s opponents.

The team is really a total joke right now. The World Cup is going to be a disaster. All one needs to do is just watch the games.

  164. Expat4455 says:

We would have beat Ukraine bad if we weren’t wearing golf shirts!

  165. Expat4455 says:

Did anyone think as I did, that when the camera fixed on Klinsmann he looked a little out of it, confused or something? Like he had a question and didn’t know the answer?

  166. Mike R says:

Yea Klinsi was sooo wrong to be worried that the quality of Clint’s play would diminish by going to MLS …

And Aaron bacon needs to get a shot starting Altidore just isn’t getting it done.
Sad that Klinsi is showing the Bob Bradleyesque way of being loyal to obviously out of form players

Also Castillo is Klinsi ‘s Bornstein.

Also just on the news Julian Greene has commited to play for Germany
    Right after the game

    • Ian says:

Dempsey’s decline can’t be so simply blamed on MLS. He was in bad form from the moment he stepped on the “pitch” in Seattle. It’s not like he waltzed into MLS at the top of his game. I think the inconsistency we saw from him at Tottenham, both in performance and playing time, had as much to do with his shoddy form as anything else. What’s for certain: Going back to the EPL on loan did not bring out the old Deuce. So your argument fails pretty soundly.
