Club America slumped to their fourth home defeat of the season as league leaders Cruz Azul emerged from the Estadio Azteca as 2-1 winners on Saturday evening.
A fast paced game saw its opening goal just before the 20 minute mark. Mauro Formica beat America’s Luis Gabriel Rey to Alejandro Castro’s cross and powerfully headed the ball past the helpless Moises Munoz.
Cruz Azul doubled the lead just before half time through another header, this time from Julio Dominguez Juarez. The defender got a slight touch on a Rogelio Chavez free kick which deceived Munoz and gave the visitors a healthy two goal lead at the break.
The second half saw America pick up two red cards. Andres Andrade received his second yellow card after a poor challenge on Chavez, before Sambueza also picked up a second booking for a 90th minute foul.
America had managed to pull one back immediately prior to the second red card through Raul Jimenez, but it was a mere consolation goal. The result means America are one of four teams on 20 points and their playoff place is still a long way from being assured.

MONTERREY AND SANTOS LAGUNA IN ENTERTAINING DRAW
Rayados and Santos Laguna drew 2-2 in Monterrey on Saturday night, as the home side threw away a two goal lead and lost the chance to move to within two points of the Liguilla places.
The hosts lead after 23 minutes when Lucas Silva scored Monterrey’s first attempt of the game. The Brazilian headed home Burbano Hernandez’s cross, though the ball took a significant deflection off Oswaldo Alanis. They added a second goal 10 minutes later through 20-year-old Candido Ramirez. Lucas Silva provided the cross and the young midfielder slotted the ball home from the edge of the area.
Santos got one back with half an hour remaining when Sergio Caballos nodded in Darwin Quintero’s freekick, and Los Guerreros completed the comeback in stoppage time when Oribe Peralta managed to beat Orozco at the second attempt.
CAMILO SCORES AS QUERETARO DRAW
Camilo scored the first goal of his Liga MX career as Queretaro came from behind to draw 1-1 with reigning champions Club Leon.
Miguel Sabah scored 54th-minute penalty after Miguel Martínez fouled Franco Arizala in the box, but Queretaro equalized just five minutes later when Camilo got on the score sheet. The former Vancouver Whitecaps player beat his marker to head in Diego de la Torre’s corner from close range.
Leon can be excused for not playing at their best given they have a Copa Libertadores tie on Wednesday and had players representing El Tri last week. The point means Queretaro retain a slight chance of a place in the Liguilla – they are currently 14th, three points behind eighth-place Chivas de Guadalajara.
BEST OF THE REST
Atlante look almost certain to face relegation after they lost 2-0 at home to Tigres UANL and Atlas and Puebla drew 0-0 in Guadalajara. Second-place Toluca were beaten 2-1 by Club Tijuana and Pumas UNAM beat Chiapas 2-1 in Mexico City.
