Reports: Green nearing season-long loan to Hamburg

Julian Green

It looks like Julian Green may be leaving Bayern Munich after all in search of first team minutes.

According to multiple reports in Germany, Green is close to signing with Hamburg on a season-long loan. Green made the game-day roster for Bayern in their Bundesliga opener on Aug. 22 but didn’t appear off the bench.

The news comes as a bit of a surprise, as Green was adamant during Bayern’s U.S. tour that he would be staying with the club to fight for his place. However, it seems that he’s either changed his mind or the club management has decided a loan away and a chance for first-team soccer is more important.

Neither Bayern or Hamburg have confirmed the report. Both clubs have until Monday at 6 p.m. local time to reach an agreement.

Green starred for Bayern Munich II last season, scoring 15 times in 23 appearances, and made his first-team debut as a late substitute against CSKA Moscow in the UEFA Champions League in Nov. 2013. Green of course then became a recognizable name around the world with his impressive goal against Belgium in the eventual 2-1 defeat for the U.S. Men’s National Team in the 2014 World Cup round of 16.

Hamburg were nearly relegated last season for the first time in their club’s history, finishing in 16th place and needing a 1-1 aggregate scoreline, surviving on away goals against Gruether Furth to remain in the Bundesliga this season.

What do you think of this news? Did you expect him to go out on loan? Do you

I prefer this for Green over sporadic minutes with Bayern. We need USMNT players to score goals and it is tough to do that from the bench.

Its pretty good really. Hamburg is rather weak right now and has no money. He should get gametime. I think.

      • Increase0 says:

Hamburg is losing to a first time ever Bundesliga team in Paderborn.

Paderborn 8 shots 1 goal. Hamburg 2 shots 0 goals.

Green will get game time. I doubt it will be a fun season either way.

  2. Rob says:

It’s not really a “surprise” considering he was never really in Bayern’s plans and they’ve been trying to ship him out for a while.
Now let’s hope he gets constant minutes with his new team.
    I highly doubt it.

      HSV are terrible.

Why do you doubt he’ll get first team minutes?

      • Sean357 says:

“Not in their plans” “trying to ship him out for a while” evidence for this? Just don’t like Julian? Green will have every chance for success at Bayern. Pep likes him and the higher ups at the club have big fat € signs in their eyes thinking about if Julian becomes a success at Bayern and for the USMNT

HAHAHHAHAHAH Julian Green cannot even play for the best team in the world. HAHAHHAHAHHAH I just found out when my phone told me.

  5. bryan says:

    Hope it works out.

  6. Brett says:

Best move for him. He’s on the very end of the bench at FCB. He needs minutes, if only to increase his value when he inevitably leaves.

  7. Harry Knuckles says:

Sweet! Get some minutes, young one.

  8. Mikebsiu says:

    Königen des Nordens!!

  9. Rob says:

Green is so last week. Now we have Hymdman to overhype.
He’s so tidy with the ball!

You must be a joy to be around..

        • François says:

Is that exclamation your belief that his ‘joke’ went over my head? That isn’t the case, I just felt like his attempt at sarcasm was overly pessimistic and cynical statement that was unnecessary, especially when you consider his comment above. This site has been invested by people who A.) have very little soccer knowledge or B.) want to galvanize an argument for the sake of argument.

      Haha.. zactly.

This is a great move for his development. He should see plenty of minutes and he’s still in the Bundesliga.
