The 2013-14 Bundesliga campaign saw Bayern Munich cruise through the Bundesliga campaign, topping rivals Borussia Dortmund by 29 points. However, when the two teams clashed Wednesday in the DFL-SuperCup, it was Dortmund that proved to be the dominant side.
Goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyeng were enough for BVB to topple Bayern, as the 2013-14 Bundesliga runners-up picked up a 2-0 victory at Signal Iduna Park to capture their second SuperCup in as many seasons.
In what was Robert Lewandowski’s return to face his former side, it was Mkhitaryan who opened the scoring by slamming home off of a deflected shot in the 23rd minute.
The lead remained at one until Aubamayeng rose above the Bayern defense to head home the game’s second before celebrating by donning a Spiderman mask that the Gabon international had stored in his sock.
Here are more news and notes from Wednesday afternoon:
FRENCH STAR RIBERY RETIRES FROM INTERNATIONAL GAME
After missing out on the 2014 World Cup due to injury, Franck Ribery’s experience with the French national team is over.
The Bayern Munich star announced Wednesday that he was quitting the international game. The 31-year-old, who missed the World Cup due to a back injury, appeared 80 times for France and scored 16 goals.
Ribery went on to say that he had numerous reasons for leaving the national team setup, including his aims to spend more time with loved ones.
“I want to dedicate myself more to my family,” Ribery said. “I’ll concentrate on the tasks at Bayern and also leave the place to the many great young players in the national team.”
MANCHESTER UNITED FULLBACK SHAW TO MISS START OF SEASON
Manchester United supporters looking forward to the Old Trafford debut of new signing Luke Shaw are going to have to wait a little longer than expected.
According to the club’s website, the 19-year-old fullback is set to miss the first four weeks of the Premier League season due to a hamstring injury.
Shaw, who sat out Tuesday’s friendly with Valencia, signed with Man United on June 27 from Southampton, where he made 38 total appearances last season.
Man United kick off their Premier League campaign against Swansea City this Saturday.
KOMPANY SIGNS FIVE-YEAR CONTRACT WITH MAN CITY
Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany won’t be leaving the Etihad any time soon.
The club announced Wednesday that the 28-year-old centerback has signed a new five-year deal that will keep Kompany with the club until 2019.
Kompany, who joins Aleksandar Kolarov, Samir Nasri and David Silva as recent City re-signings, has been with the club since a 2008 transfer from Hamburger SV.
“When I arrived in 2008, I could never have dreamed that we could achieve what we have over the last six years but, for me, this is just the start of the journey,” Kompany said. “This team is stronger now than it’s ever been; we have competition for places in every position and a dressing room full of exceptional, motivated people who want to continue making history together.
“Lifting two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the Capital One Cup have been four of the best days of my life but I believe that there are many more of these occasions ahead.
