Onyewu leaves strong impression after return to USA starting lineup

HARRISON, NJ– The U.S. men’s national team might have lost to Ecuador on Tuesday night, but there was one bright spot for Jurgen Klinsmann and company.

Oguchi Onyewu is back.

In Onyewu’s first full 90-minute game for the United States since the World Cup match against England, the 6-foot-4 centerback proved to be the enforcer that U.S. fans remember from the Confederations Cup in 2009.

Onyewu moved freely, unhampered by the knee surgery that has plagued him for the past two years. Gooch, as he’s affectionately called by fans and teammates, won ball after ball, both in the air and on the ground.

“Gooch in the back, he’s back,” said U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. “It was awesome to see. He’s getting his rhythm and his presence is amazing and really good to watch.”

Red Bulls down Galaxy to climb up playoff charts

Harrison, NJ– The New York Red Bulls finally put together a dominating win that is expected of the star-laden franchise, pushing them from the brink of missing the playoffs to looking like a team capable of making noise in the post-season.

Luke Rodgers and Thierry Henry tallied goals in New York’s 2-0 win over a Los Angeles Galaxy squad without it’s own stars of Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane.

The victory moved the Red Bulls into a tie for fourth place in the East, and a tie for ninth place overall with Houston.

RSL manhandles New York in 3-1 win

HARRISON, N.J. — The New York Red Bulls are a sinking ship.

New York, after a gutsy win in Dallas on Saturday, had a chance to strengthen its playoff hold. Real Salt Lake was without suspended midfield rock Kyle Beckerman and traveled cross country after a hard-fought win against Sporting KC. But any doubt that RSL would collect their fifth win a row was erased almost immediately.

RSL scored three goals in the opening 21 minutes to roll to a 3-1 victory and deal a heavy blow to the Red Bulls’ postseason hopes.

In the eighth minute, Andy Williams spun a perfect corner to the head of Alvaro Saborio. The Costa Rican Designated Player beat Teemu Tainio to the ball and finished for the early 1-0 lead.

Red Bulls drop points, fall out of playoff spot after yet another disappointing draw

The New York Red Bulls couldn’t muster more than a point against the last place Vancouver Whitecaps in a virtual must-win.

Down a goal and a man, Juan Agudelo came to the rescue with a crucial goal in the 68th minute. Rafa Marquez played a long 30-yard cross into the box that found a streaking Agudelo. The U.S. international burst past John Thorrington and volleyed home the equalizer.

Red Bulls draw last place Fire

Another game, another draw for the New York Red Bulls.

After not winning a game since July 6th, the Red Bulls desperately needed three points to stay in the increasingly crowded Eastern Conference playoff picture. A match against the last place Chicago Fire seemingly was that game, but New York let an opportunity and an early lead slip away once again.

The Red Bulls were actually down in the second half, but a Joel Lindpere goal saved at least a point for the star-studded Red Bulls. Juan Agudelo headed down a long ball to Lindpere. The Estonian played Richards out wide and the Jamiacan sent a low, driving cross to Lindpere who volleyed the ball past Johnson in the 65th minute.

“It’s pretty frustrating just to have so many chances and to play such good football and not come out with three points that we’ve been looking for the past month,” said Red Bulls sub Juan Agudelo.
