CONCACAF Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Rafael_marquez_afp_2

It was a good week for CONCACAF players in European competitions in mid-week, with Mexican captain Rafael Marquez scoring for Barcelona and Honduran star David Suazo scoring his first goal for Benfica.

Unfortunately, the goal-scoring touch didn’t carry over to the weekend.

There were no CONCACAF Abroad goal-scorers this weekend in Europe’s top leagues. Not Canadians, Mexicans, Jamaicans or Trinidadians.  It wasn’t for a lack of candidates, as several of the region’s best took the field last weekend. (Canadian midfielder Atiba Hutchinson did score for FC Copenhagen in the Danish League, so it wasn’t a complete donut).

Keep in mind that I will focus on top first divisions in Europe with the second divisions in England and Germany also being included (I will also look to add Serie B as well as the Spanish second division if possible). There may be players in very small leagues (like say Moldova or Poland) but my inclusion of players in those leagues is contingent on being able to find a reliable source of information on those leagues.

Feel free to share your thoughts on these performances in the comments section below.

  1. I’m curious about something, Ives. You list the likes of Giuseppe Rossi amongst Americans abroad (a decision I wholeheartedly agree with, by the way) but not Jon DeGuzman and Owen Hargreaves for Canada, despite them both being Canadian. Why is that?

  2. Ives – Mexican CB Francisco Rodriguez is at PSV but haven’t heard much about him. Is he hurt or just not making the grade in Eindhoven?

  3. Carlos Costly’s (Honduras) team, GKS Belchatow (Poland), won this weekend. Not sure if he played.

Tim, Seedorf is Dutch, though he was born in Suriname.

  4. Owen Hargreaves started. Just to let Canadians know :):):):)

Franco has experience. In Bradley’s world, that makes Franco a starter over Altidore if Franco was magically to turn into an American.

  5. Gustavo Cabrera, the Guatemalan centerback and fullback, is currently signed on with AGF Aarhus in Denmark (along with Feilhaber and White). I don’t think he has played yet with them, but he is a CONCACAF player in Europe. He’ll be easier to track as well since he’s on the same team as two Yanks.
