When he was drafted by the New England Revolution, defender A.J. Soares was regarded by many as the most pro-ready defender in the MLS Draft and a player capable of stepping in and contributing right away.

Soares has been just that for the Revs this season, and this past week was a strong example of that. After scoring a goal in New England's 4-4 draw against Philadelphia, Soares helped anchor the New England defense as the Revs posted a 2-0 victory against FC Dallas. Those performances helped Soares earn SBI MLS Rookie of the Week honors.

Soares edged out a good field of rookies this past week, including Sporting KC's C.J. Sapong, D.C. United's Ethan White and Perry Kitchen.

What did you think of Soares' performance this past week? What rookie would have gotten your Rookie of the Week vote?

  1. I’d agree wholeheartedly as

    1) I’m an unabashed AJ Soares fan
    2) His style of play is a great mix of cerebral positioning and strong hard-knocks marking

I think he’ll go very far (so long as that doesn’t mean away from my beloved Revs.. sorry AJ) and his style has the potential to make him a durable player on the long view.

  2. At the beginning of the year my friend and I were debating which rookie CB who would have the better year and career, AJ Soares (my friend is a Cal fan) or Jalil Anibaba.
Any unbiased third parties have an opinion based on how they have done so far?
