The first round of the U.S. Open Cup is in the books, with 16 amateur teams advancing to the second round, when NASL and USL Pro sides enter the competition under the tournament's new format.

From Tuesday's first-round results, Pacific Northwest sides Kitsap Pumas and the Portland Timbers' U-23 team both fell, with amateur side Cal FC, coached by Eric Wynalda, knocking off Kitsap 3-1 behind two goals from former UCSB and U.S. youth international Danny Barrera. Also of note was the extra-time performance turned in by the Ventura County Fusion, who blew open a 2-2 game with four goals after regulation for a 6-2 win over Fullerton Rangers.

After next week's second round, the 16 U.S.-based MLS teams will enter the tournament in the third round to face the winners. The draw to determine which winners the MLS clubs will play has not yet taken place.

  1. 50/50 but only if they have a stadium that meets certain minimum requirements and the ownership wants to do it. Starting this year its a coin flip to determine the home team. Any team that makes it to the third round is guaranteed to face an MLS team.

  2. So, if my hometown Fuego beat Ft. Lauderdale, then they play against an MLS team? What are the chances to HOST an MLS team?

  4. I love this tournament… can’t wait until the third round to see some MLS teams have to venture into the Southeast and some smaller markets in the midwest
